  1. It helps to actually read the entire post before replying. This is a great idea. If everyone in Second Life would take a few minutes out of their busy schedule every day to help another resident who needs it, the grid would be a better place.
  2. I do have my smartphone paired with my PC using Bluetooth. But I don't see an app that could be used as the PC's audio in and out. In other words, I want the Second Life voice setup to recognize my smartphone's microphone and earphones as the audio in and out. There's an app called "WiFi-earphone for PC" that lets you send the PC's audio to the smartphone, and there's another app called "WO mic" that lets your smartphone become a wireless microphone for the PC. But I am not finding an app that does both. Maybe no one else on the planet wants that. I bought this laptop a couple of weeks ago, and it works great for Second Life running only 802.11g WiFi (I have an older router). That runs at 54 megabytes per second, so there should be no trouble running SL over WiFi. The headset connector is a single mini phone jack, and I can plug my cell phone's headset into it and talk and hear on voice. So that works, lets me run SL from anywhere in the house, and I'm very happy with it. I was just hoping for a way to have a little more lightweight voice communication freedom using the desktop PC. I have WiFi Analyzer on my phone too. There's no one nearby with a strong enough signal to be a problem. The only problem I ever see with the wireless headset is when I'm in the kitchen running the microwave oven. That thing puts out enough broadband radio frequency energy to desensitize the headset's receiver. I have to turn on the microwave and then run back into the family room before I lose the signal from the PC. That was a real shocker the first time it happened.

  4. Thank you for the information. The H800 looks excellent for $68.99 at Amazon. It has 1438 reviews there with an overall score of 3.8 out of 5.
  5. TouchofSoul wrote: What I'm trying to find out is how much a visitor of my sim is allowed to report to ME, as simowner. And how much of the TOS then applies to my simrules. Section 4, "Disclosure," of the Second Life Community Standards (which are part of the Linden Lab Terms of Service), prohibits sharing chat logs without consent. Remotely monitoring conversations in Second Life, posting conversation logs, or sharing conversation logs without the participants' consent are all prohibited. The Linden Lab Official Policy about Residents' privacy rights provides additional terms and conditions. Sharing or posting a conversation inworld or in the Second Life forums without consent of all involved Residents is a violation of the Terms of Service. So Disclosure applies specifically to chat logs shared within Second Life or the Second Life forums. Also note that there is no distinction made between a conversation in local chat and a conversation in IM - both are subject to privacy rights. LL continued on their policy page, describing how chat logs may be shared without violating the ToS. NOTE: This does not include posting of chat to social media sites or other websites. Posting such logs on web pages, emailing them, or printing them out and posting them on utility poles in the "real world" -- are all actions beyond the scope of the Second Life Terms of Service. ; while that might be illegal, but those laws must be enforced by the proper law enforcement agencies. "Conversation" means text that originally came from Second Life chat or Second Life instant messages. If it's totally unattributed, then it isn't considered disclosure. Additionally, Residents are not punished for sharing or posting a comment such as "Bob Resident said, 'You're the greatest!'" So if someone has a legitimate harassment complaint and wants to share chat logs with you, have them email you the conversation, or share it with you on Skype, or send you a link to where they posted it on their blog. When a conversation is shared outside of official Linden Lab channels, it is not covered by the Linden Lab Terms of Service. That privacy policy also tells you what you need to do if you are remotely monitoring a conversation or using a scripted object to record conversation. If I were you, I would not do either of those things, because the instructions in the policy appear to be contradictory. For example, the policy says that you may remotely monitor conversations if you provide notification to all participants by posting a clearly visible sign in the recording location. However, it also says that you may not remotely log chat by using a scripted object unless you obtain consent. This might be a good place to address those disclaimers in people's profile picks that supposedly allows them to share your conversation logs whether you consent to it or not. Section 11 of the Linden Lab Terms of Service says this: Except for such Updated Terms, this Agreement may not be modified except by mutual written agreement between you and Linden Lab that is signed by hand (not electronically) by duly authorized representatives of both parties and expressly references amendment of this Agreement. You acknowledge that no other written, oral or electronic communications will serve to modify or supplement this Agreement, and you agree not to make any claims inconsistent with this understanding or in reliance on communications not part of this Agreement.A resident may post whatever they want in their profile picks, but posting a disclaimer doesn't allow them to disregard the Terms of Service or Community Standards. Those disclaimers mean nothing. TouchofSoul wrote: So what I was trying to find out if I, in any way, could defend the banning without requesting chatlogs from all involved? Could the person who was banned ever turn around and report me for wrongful banning or whatever? As others here have said, it's your region and your rules. You can ban people for any reason or for no reason. As long as you don't violate the Terms of Service, there's nothing they could write in an Abuse Report that would affect you. For example, there are certain regions that do not allow furry avatars. This isn't intolerance against furries, a violation of the Community Standards. It's just a ban on furries with no reason offered or necessary. So you are safe.

  7. For voice in Second Life I have been using a Logitech G930 wireless headset. The battery life is great, the microphone quality is top notch, and it has a volume control and a microphone mute switch on the left earphone. The disadvantages are that it is very heavy, and it clamps too tightly on my head, with no way to adjust it to be looser. I am happy with this headset for short term use during DJ sessions, but I would like to have something lighter and more comfortable that I could wear for hours while I'm not DJing. Recently I was talking on voice with a friend, and asked her what she was using for a headset. She said she was using a cheap cell phone headset, the kind with two earbuds and the mic hanging down on a wire next to her cheek. She sounded great, with very high quality audio. But she plugged her headset into a wire, and I want mine to be wireless. So I am thinking, why couldn't I plug the cell phone headset into my Android phone and use an Android app to make the phone into a wireless Second Life headset? My problem is that I don't know if there is an Android app that would let me do this. I've searched the Play Store and I've searched through Android forum conversations with no success. Is anyone using a cell phone as a wireless headset for SL voice? How did you get it to work? On a related note (and this is something I've been looking for for several years), it seems to me that someone should be selling a Bluetooth communication module that you can clip on your belt and plug in a wired headset. If I have problems wearing a massive set of headphones that also has the batteries and the radio communications inside of it, then it could be more attractive to have the batteries and the radio inside a box that's clipped on my belt, and wear a lightweight and comfortable wired headset plugged into that box. It seems like a simple product that would fill a need, so there should be several different brands competing for the customers who want it. Instead, it hasn't been invented yet as far as I can tell. Or is it widely used by happy customers, and I'm the only guy who has never heard of it?
  8. The problem with a movelock is that it is not one hundred percent effective. When someone bumps into you, your avatar will turn and move a little. The griefer gets a reaction, which is what he wants, so he will keep doing it again and again. Sitting on the ground, which is done with the keyboard combination Ctrl-Alt-S ("Force Ground Sit"), turns you into an anchored rock. When the griefer runs into you, he will bounce off. If he runs into you with a tank, the tank will bounce off. You won't move an inch. Here's something fun - if you have an AO, you can use a standing animation for the Ground Sit. I have that set up, and when I hit Ctrl-Alt-S, my avatar stands with his arms crossed. I look like an easy target to the griefer, but when he walks into me, he actually walks up and over the top of me. I have seen them try five or six times to move me before giving up and selecting a softer target. It's hilarious. Griefers are like oddball vampires - they survive on your tears. They want you to get angry and react to their actions somehow. If everyone in the area just ignores them, then it's no fun for them, and they leave to find another place to grief. Of course, along with your silent lack of reaction, you should be filling out that Abuse Report form along with everyone else who is affected, so the griefer learns that actions have consequences. I don't know what the keyboard combination Alt-Shift-S is supposed to do. It does put you into a Forced Ground Sit, but doesn't bring you back out of it. Ctrl-Alt-S is a toggle that turns ground sit on and off, and it is the keyboard combination that is shown on the Firestorm Avatar Movement menu.
  9. Governance8linden Resident is also gone from Search. Abuse Reports are effective! Who's next??? :matte-motes-big-grin-squint:
  10. This guy was taking advantage of the fact that a lowercase "L" looks like an uppercase "i" in Arial font. His name was not DANLINDEN Resident, but DANLlNDEN Resident (danllnden in lowercase). And of course, in Arial font, DANLINDEN looks just like DANLlNDEN. If there is still a Linden filter for new resident names, it would not have caught this guy.
  11. DANLlNDEN Resident now cannot be found in Search. Thank you Linden Lab.
  12. The Linden Lab governance team responds to numbers. The official guidance on filing an Abuse Report says this: "Reports from multiple people underscore the seriousness of an incident." So gather your friends and get everyone to write ARs on griefer objects. If you're the only one who submits an AR, your report goes into the same bucket as someone complaining about being called a bad name, or a neighbor with an overhanging prim. Also, there are groups you can join that will respond to reports of griefer attacks and file ARs to get the G-Team's attention. One of my friends gave me a list of prolific griefers who can no longer be found in Second Life search. All of them were removed from the grid between March 5 and the present. I wrote an article about it, adding a few names that I knew of. There are 40 names on that list, some of whom were causing trouble in Second Life for several years. So you can't really say "LL doesn't care" or "LL won't do anything to help," because they do and they will.

  14. I have no idea what this is about either. I am a conservative in RL but I have no political groups in my profile. Maybe he is thinking of someone else with "Green" in his SL name, LOL.
  15. If you click the link, you will see that it is a web page devoted to helping new residents get started in Second Life. It's my way of giving something back, trying to help keep people from wandering around lost and confused like I did when I got here more than seven years ago. Dillon, I don't believe we have met in Second Life, so I am wondering why someone would see the need to comment on a stranger's group memberships. That is irrelevant to this conversation and to the link above. And if you find any "bad advice" in the New Resident Help page, please let me know. :matte-motes-big-grin:
  16. Linden Lab would not ban someone from a single sandbox, so that means the sandbox you were banned from is privately owned. Since that is the case, no amount of Linden Lab support tickets or calls on the phone will get you unbanned from that private sandbox. Buying something from someone in a sandbox and then rezzing it is a recipe for trouble. Griefers love to give or sell "Giant Army weapons pack" or "Five awesome racecars" or whatever, to unsuspecting residents. When the resident rezzes his amazing bargain to unpack it, he discovers to his horror that it is a set of self-replicating giant cubes carrying pornographic photos and spamming offensive chat messages. It sounds like you have already learned that lesson. If you are looking for another sandbox where you can build, just open the map and type "sandbox" into the search window. You will see plenty of destinations.
  17. Maybe this will help. :matte-motes-big-grin:
  18. I sent you a private message linking to a parcel security seminar that I gave back in 2010. Although it's mostly applicable to island sims, many of the measures could work on the mainland too. I didn't link it here because it names one person as a griefer, and that might be considered to be flaming.
  19. The prims are set to phantom, so they do not interact with avatars or objects. The reason for wearing it is the same reason there are light shows during real life concerts - it looks cool and enhances the experience.
  20. In my inventory folder full of all things relating to dancing, I have an object called "Laser burst 32 prims" that consists of 32 linked megaprims of the size 0.01 x 0.01 x 250. They are colored green, set to full bright, and have a 0.03 glow. I noticed a few weeks ago that every time I selected "Add" to wear that object, I was unable to see the object, and also my avatar disappeared. The only thing remaining is two particle effects from objects that I'm wearing. One evening recently I discovered that a friend who I had been talking to suddenly became invisible. She said that she had put on some kind of laser object (I never did find out what it was), and another friend nearby also lost sight of her. Everyone else could see her. When she took off the object, I and my nearby friend could see her. When I put on Laser burst 32 prims, my nearby friend lost sight of me too. So I decided to do some testing. I created an object consisting of 9 linked prims, each 0.01 x 0.01 x 64, green, set to full bright, with 0.10 glow. So I modified it to be 21 prims, and when I wore it, my avatar disappeared. I edited the object, removing prims one at a time, until I could wear it and still see my avatar. At 11 prims, my avatar still disappeared, but when the object was cut down to 10 prims, I could wear it and see both it and my avatar at the same time. I created an object consisting of 21 linked prims, each 0.1 x 0.1 x 0.1, with the same lighting setup as above, and I could wear that object and still see my avatar. I am using the latest version of Firestorm (my nearby friend was too). I have "Local Lights" turned on in my graphics settings, which are set to between High and Ultra. In my debug settings, I have RenderAttachedLights set to TRUE. In my Develop menu, I have Render Attached Lights selected (same thing?). Has anyone else experienced this? And can anyone suggest a reason why it's happening?
  21. sean, that is an amazing document! Thank you for posting it. Was that generated automatically, or did you have to do it manually? And where did you find the old version of the ToS?
  22. I've been training some new peacekeepers on the ToS, and it looks like the classes I held on Monday and Wednesday were much different from what I'm going to teach on Friday. I do recall that after the Teen Grid merged with the main grid, LL had a complicated set of rules that had those aged 13-15 only able to access specially approved areas sponsored by an organization. I updated my lesson plans in June and was happy to see that LL had simplified things (probably so they didn’t have to approve those special sims). Here's what I recorded in the ToS lesson plan: 2.1 Age Requirements for Second Life Users must be at least 16 years old. If at least 16 but under 18, parent or guardian must consent to having the account and providing personal information, and must accept the ToS on their behalf. 2.2 Age Requirements for Use of Areas of the Service Users 16-18 may only access areas rated General, while those 18 and older may access General, Moderate and Adult areas. The minimum age was set at 16 for some time, but now it is back to 13. But I agree that the words are somewhat ambiguous, for example, can a 13 year old be a premium member? I also noticed by a quick check that the old "Additional Terms and Policies" almost all go to the same links at the new "Related Policies." At least the Community Standards are still there, and seemingly unchanged. That is a relief! https://secondlife.com/corporate/cs.php
  23. We keep reporting griefer attacks, as we've always done, but LL doesn't seem to be too interested in responding to the reports these days. I disagreed with the cynic who said they are not responding to griefer attacks in the LL free sandboxes any more because they want people to get premium accounts and use the premium sandboxes. Some griefer objects disappeared from Sandbox Island a few nights back, and someone said a Linden had deleted them, but it may have been just the sandbox autoreturn.
