I don't know why you bothered to spend the time replying here.  You've added nothing but som snarky insulting comments.

My point was that to offer a non-functional product for sale is (technically) criminal fraud.  This is a bit beyond simply buying the wrong size panties on MP.

The point about non functional products has been discussed before, other examples include dance machines, web vending systems and more.

As I wrote, LL won't implement simple mechanisms to help customers avoid this, showing the date when the merchant last logged on would help a customer be aware if the merchant was still around.  Incredibly simple attribute to add to the listing page.  Requring merchants to periodically action an event to keep a listing active otherwise it would be auto de-listed would remove products from inactive merchants with dead back end systems.

You may not like my brief factual answers to each of your questions but each was precise and... factual.

There is as much incentive for LL to offer an inworld building tool as there is for LL to offer an inworld painting tool for textures, the tools to do this external to SL are plentiful with excellent free options.

Sylvia, you've been here long enough to know how MP works, what the issues are and why LL doesn't address them.

Pam beat me to the obvious statement of "If you don't like the answer, don't ask the question" because unfortunately, in this case, that's the issue.  However when it comes to skin thickness, rhino's and elephants are in the queue behind me so I will continue to bother to answer posts with factual responses whether the recipient likes the answers or not!

  2. White text can only be said by an avatar or a dialogue button from a script and that limits the length of text to something like 20 characters.

It is quite possible that those whom you ask are not using a HUD.

I'm a touch typist, when I used to host, I just typed fast or for a few key things could copy and paste from a notecard. It's better to personalise and I never liked being greeted by a script. It's about as disingenuous as standing on a railway station platform and having a recorded computer voice say "I'm sorry, your train is late". It's a machine, it cannot be sorry and is a poor excuse instead of using a human.

    Just my view :)

I've been thinking of buying Mesh Studio for a while and I finally went to MP to put down my $5,000 and its seems the product is not only broken (the servers are down and have been for a long time), but the reviews state that the server is literally "never coming back up."  Yet the product is still for sale in MP for waht amounts to about twenty dollars in real world money.

[This happens, sometimes a creator just goes away]

Now since this would basically be a case of
    criminal fraud
if it's true, making both Mesh Studio and Linden Labs legally liable for class action suits and even possible criminal prosecution ... I kind of doubt it.

On the other hand, when you go to any of Mesh Studio's web presences you can't find any information on this at all and no way to even contact them over any issues you might have with their product.  So before I throw away twenty bucks on a non-working product I have some questions:

    1) Does anyone really know for sure if the server will ever come back up again?

[No idea, contact the creator, if no contact, assume not]

    2) What happens if it doesn't?

    [You lose money]

    3) Will Linden Labs refund our money if the servers never come up again?

[Resident to resident transaction so Nope!]

    4) Why doesn't Mesh Studio offer any information or help on this topic? (what are they hiding?)

[The creator might have just gone away, be dead, uninterested, incapcitated, whatever]

    5) Why doesn't Linden Labs remove the non-functional product from MP if the servers are non-functional for so long?

[They don't consider it worth their effort, i've asked for 'keep alive' activity such that merchants have to regularly indicate that a listing should remain active and that the listing should display the date of the merchant last login.  Nope, not interesting for LL]

    6a) Why isn't there at least a
    warning
    on the product on MP?

[Who do you expect to write it?  Last merchant login would help though but you can find that from their group, just more work]

6b) Why do you have to go to "reviews" to find out you are about to be completely ripped off?

[see above, there's no other process]

Finally, why the heck doesn't Linden Labs produce a similar tool?

[They don't need to, there are other 3D tools that are FAR more capable and free]

There is obviosuly a huge demand for such tools, and there must be many other Second Life users out there like myself who are "masters of the prim" but don't have the skills to use 3D programs like Blender, or the money to pay for them.  Are we supposed to just wander off into the sunset and die?

[seriously, learn blender, you do have the skills, just spend some time, no magic bullet and mesh studio isn't a magic fix either.  It's your choice if you choose to wander off and die.]

Second Life has a huge legacy of fantastic prim builds that will soon be lost forever if a reliable "prim-to-mesh" tool is not introduced post haste.  So many fantastic builders have already left Second Life over this issue.  Isn't it about time this whole thing is fixed "from the top" at Linden Labs?

[such a tool already exists in some of the viewers, to export prim to mesh, what you do with that is up to you though, not much benefit if all you're doing is converting it to mesh of the exact same thing as it won't be optimised]

    Sylvia

Actually though, i'm not sure why you feel these legacy builds will be lost soon?  LL isn't making SL mesh only so they can just stick around.

  4. You cannot unpack a TEXTURE but if the texture is applied to an object, then it's an object that can contain items.

This is not uncommon because if the seller creates a flat prim and slaps the product picture on the side, then puts the content on the inside, it's the same item that they would use inworld to display the item as a vendor.

Some of my stuff still comes in boxes with a picture on the side, same as MP, because it's convenient and what has to be used with an inworld vending system.

If the item is a cube icon in inventory, rez it and unbox it.

If it is genuinely a texture only then that's a different issue and no you can't do anything about it other than contact the creator.

Feel free to post a picture here of either what the item looks like in inventory, or if you can rez it, what it looks like inworld.

I had (or have) a problem with one of the creators (didn't receive what i bought) and asked the support for help.

    Inworld purchase or Marketplace?

Just a non delivery or the wrong item?

If it's Marketplace and a non delivery then you didn't have a problem with a creator but with Linden Lab, they are responsible for operating the Marketplace delivery process.

If it was an inworld purchase then Support have no part in this as it's a resident to resident transaction and LL are not involved.

  6. If it's only a small amount, likelihood is that like many of us, we send newbies some L$ to help out.

Worst case scenario would be someone sending fraudulently obtained L$ but that's not your fault, nothing would happen to you other than any funds recovered.

Or perhaps we can speculate on the differences between the reception here and inworld, where everyone I've mentioned it to thinks it sounds grand. I'm really curious why it's been like night and day.

Quite probably because you asked friends inworld who are like minded, after all, people do tend to associate themselves with similar people, that's only to be expected.

The forums are a broader spread of people who have no emotional connection as a friend might and may be less concerned about a different viewpoint being taken as a threat to a relationship.

When subject to a merely analytic view, it's inevitable that the experience will be different.

Are you saying to just do this manually as record-keeping?

Or are you saying there is a way for the SL inventory to display on your hard drive, or even show an individual file name?

I've never seen anything like that. I thought it was all in an asset server, not stored locally. Huh?

Inventory has always been cached locally.  This is why things like textures have absolutely zero security around them, everyone has a copy!

Google "sl inventory viewer" for a few examples, yes there are tools including one that has been in the wiki for ages:-

    http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/SL_My_Inventory_Viewer

featuring "Associate a local image file or flickr.com (or anyother internet URL) with an inventory object. "

Folders don't reduce the total number of items in the inventory. (How did this get to be all about folders?)

Inventory systems and prims can't be bulk searched.

Does it still sound so pointless?

Folders don't need to reduce the number of items in inventory.

Inventory systems CAN be bulk searched, depending on the system.  If I wrote one, it would log the prim content to SQL server along with a suitable picture and rich keywording, then you'd just search that system and it would auto-rez and unpack the right box.  Not a big task for a modern inventory system.

To me, yes it sounds like a solution looking for a problem.  I've just had a quick look, my 68,000 item inventory takes me 22 seconds from login button to inworld, I don't see that as a problem.  If I wanted to swap to a different category of inventory per the proposal, i'd need to stop what I was doing, logout, choose another inventory thing and login again.  Surely that overhead has already negated any extra time you may experience? *shrugs*

I understand that it's an idea that would work for you and not me, people work in different ways but i'm still not clear what the actual problem is that needs solving here?  Better searching, better categorising, better cataloguing I can accept but a need to leave lumps of my inventory behind when I login?  That's the part I don't see as a "benefit" with this solution and it feels to me like the actual thing you want to address wouldn't need to leave behind inventory either, if only it was presented in a different way?

  10. Yes but that's also in the simplest possible pose.  Once the limbs move, the texture will be occluded by overlapping parts, just as they did with sculpties.

However, it doesn't matter, as long as you're happy with the result, that's all that actually matters here.  I just think you'll find no appetite to create mesh clothing that has been broken into parts for this purpose because it's much more work for the creator, will make any kind of HUD texture scripting an absolute pain in the bum.

Try looking for sculptie based stuff instead?

  11. There is a solution to being unique.

Learn to make your own stuff!

I have plenty of things that nobody else has. If you don't want to invest the time in learning and I can understand that, pay for a unique item by commissioning it to be created.

The question is "how much is it worth to be unique?"

  12. I didn't call it that.  I said that I stated that I didn't perceive a benefit of choosing what inventory I had at login, only to find mid session that I didn't have what I needed.

In choosing a category of inventory (and thus leaving other parts of your inventory inaccessible after login), what problem are you seeking to solve here because arranging things logically is already achievable (to me)?

  13. Yes that's the only way, that's how we had to do it with sculpties but what you're asking for will be VERY rare now as it's an ugly way to do it with all sorts of parts overlapping.  Given that fitted mesh or mesh bodies solves the issue for the bulk of users, you'll be hard pressed to find what you want but good luck, you don't know if you don't ask.

  14. If you try unrigged clothing, you'll need to be permanently running the T pose animation because clothing without any weights will not move at all with the avatar armature animations.

What you would need is to source the clothing as files that you would edit in a 3d application to them upload to SL yourself... After rigging it yourself.

  15. Oh it's far from impossible, depending on the scripting. For example, a misdirected llRegionSayTo message could have been incorrectly sent to the wrong avatar and while someone thought they were updating their own settings, were in fact updating someone else's. Reference the other thread and there's a plausible correlation here.

However, it's only a "possible" action, it could be just the usual end user dramatainment.

Once again, best suggestion to the OP would be to ask YT Recreant, the product creator.

Sassy (who has never ever sent a message to the wrong recipient.. ever...nuh uh... Shakes head vigorously)

  16. I doubt that llRegionSay has suddenly started directing messages at the wrong recipient but equally it's just a product issue to take up with the creator, it doesn't warrant a public shaming.

My favourite booboo in my own products was when I swapped language notecards which resulted in people's private parts emoting in Japanese. I miss those days.

  17. Except that scripts (attached to an avatar) need to have a CPU upon which their code will run. Same for avatar communications.

When flying up, you're still in the same sim, there's a CPU upon which code for that avatar can execute. If the avatar is supposedly flying beyond that sim, where is it? Upon which simulator platform is the avatar being simulated on?

You can't say "it's on the first one" without making provision for that avatars resources to no longer count. That's probably a significant amount of redesign for an unnecessary feature. Who really wants to fly for ages?

To the OP, it's called Second Life, not Second World. TP is just fine in my opinion.

  18. I've never heard of the one you're talking about but here's the thing, to create items for mesh bodies requires the creator to get hold of the dev kit for each body concerned.

You might want to do some research to see the hoops that some mesh body vendors require that other creators have to go through and even then after applications for a dev kit, just get ignored.

Some of the creator's of mesh bodies state that they will basically not even bother to tell you if you're not successful with an application.

Your best bet would be to sink money into the body with the best support for clothing and just leave it at that.

Is it such an unreasonable request then to supply an extra outfit without the alpha built in so I can indeed create my own alpha?

It's not unreasonable though for some it's more effort.  I usually supplied the alpha texture, the UV map and said "go make it even better, it's yours now!"

it's down to personal creator choice though, your option is to patronise those whom you feel you get the best deal at.  Mesh is a complete PITA to be honest with all the different compatibility issues, creator kits (or lack of!) and implementations.  Just wait for Bento stuff to hit and see who gives free upgrades to new Bento compatible items.

    Popcorn time! :)

One thing I found out is that Second Life viewers are specific to the IP address that your computer has. Simply put, if you get a second computer and try to log in on a viewer, your password will be rejected. Why?

Ok, I was going to outright refute this but I have thought about it further.  I've just tested 3 different countries that i've never logged on through before and had no problem, it's not an IP address only thing.

However, there's no reason why a hash of the machine hardware shouldn't also be presented as part of the logon and I do recall once being told that the machine UUID is also transported.

So, same machine UUID, different IP addresses is a travelling person with the same machine but all of a sudden a different UUID from a different geolocation *should* damn well flag up a potential issue.  Although a different UUID at the same IP address should really not necessarily be an idicator of a security threat.  Having said that, if the IP address is NAT'd then yes, once again, it could be a security threat from the same location, e.g. college campus.

If only LL would grow some clue and implement multi-factor authentication or in the case of the above, at least send an OTP to the original users phone number before allowing authencation although these aren't secure anyway but still.

Logging on via the website doesn't prove ownership of the account unless they're extracting something from a cookie perhaps to show that the credentials had been used in the past at a known location?  Dunno, not interested at this point, the base issue is that LL do not place a value in the users credentials and continue to only offer single factor authentication in a world where passwords are long since dead!
