I love this thread so much! It reminds me of every RL move I've ever made.

I'm NOT READY FOR SNOW YET!!! Stop looking so happy about it! ARRRGGHHH. (Actually, I've already got snow, a couple of inches of it, where I am. It's bad enough dealing with it in RL!)

This is both unnecessary, and utterly untrue. SL has large and enormously vibrant communities full of extremely accomplished, and very courteous, international residents who speak a really diverse range of languages. Please don't leave the impression that these people are a problem. Xenophobia is not a good look on you, or us.

Fear not! We've alerted Amnesty International and the UNHRC. We anticipate that with proper pressure, applied through international sanctions and boycotts, we should have your computer up and running SL properly in a few short years. Hang in there, Prok! The eyes of the free world are upon you!

Although it's in some ways frustrating because very much unrehearsed, I take heart from this one by Cassie Middles because she sometimes sounds almost as confused as I was. (Almost. No one is quite as confused as me.)

I'm so sorry this happened to you! Unfortunately, it's not an entirely uncommon thing at the areas that new people often congregate or start, but you'll find it's much less prevalent once you get out and start exploring elsewhere in SL. The suggestion above, that you just sit on the ground or on an object (right click and choose sit) works, and once you do it, the griefer will quickly get bored and move on. I have a question for others, that's just occurred to me. If you derender an avatar, can it still push you? I've never tried this, so I don't really know.

I gave the new HUD an admittedly quick look last night, and I'm going to confess to being completely confused by it. I'm sure it will become clearer with time and practice, but I'm hoping that Strawberry Singh or someone produces a tutorial soon. For one thing, I couldn't figure out how to just turn it off! (Sorry, I'm hopeless at this kind of thing. Don't even get me started on using remotes in RL.)

I have a friend and colleague whose specialization is history of the English language. He never fails to refer to this to his students as "The Great Vowel Movement." Apparently much hilarity ensues as a result.

I see this as a CHALLENGE! I want to wear a yacht or a hunting lodge at least. I think I have the requisite talent!

So beautiful! I've spent hours and days and (it sometimes seems) months tweaking my Genus head. It's a really nice head -- almost uncanny valley good -- but I've had a difficult time settling on a look I really like. ? But you seem to have managed gorgeous right away!

I love this pic! And you look great! (I really like how good humoured you always look!) Did you get the slightly off-kilter look in Photoshop? There's no way to do that in the viewer, is there?

That's nice, but I can't find it now and it doesn't matter. Because SL played only a few months ago, as indeed it did for the previous year. Quick question: do you ever think there's anything wrong with Linden Lab's software? Or do you think it's only a problem that non-technical people have. I don't use Google Chrome. Really, it's kind of sweet. I think the two of you really kind of deserve each other. What fun you'd be together at a party!

I've never tried it in SL, but in RL, some gfs and I used to dance regularly at a nearby gay club (generally accompanied by a gay friend) for exactly this reason. It was the nicest place!!!

Excuse my technological idiocy, but wasn't there a service years and years ago for SL on mobile devices that essentially did all of the hard processing for its users, and then streamed then easy-to-run video? I'm sure there are lots of problems that I don't know of, but might not something like that be a future solution? I think it's not an unimportant issue, and not just for SL. I don't think the vast majority of people can afford a US$2000 computer, and most probably don't have access to fibre optic cable. I don't know what the data on this is (and I don't imagine even LL has more than a vague idea), but I'm pretty sure that SL users as a whole score rather higher on the economic/social/educational scale than our general populations. It would be good to find a way to "democratize" the platform a bit, making it more affordable and hence more accessible to a wider range of people. (Which I'm quite sure is part of Prok's motivation here as well . . .)

Well, that sounds like a tough job. But if it's in the service of, you know, making a better world for ourselves and our children . . . This is because women are the traditional guardians of civilized behavior and culture. And because men are traditionally pretty thick. I actually have no problems at all with this kind of model, to be honest. And if that's all I wanted, I'd be tempted to take that approach. (Although I probably wouldn't, because it is against every element of my upbringing and cultural assumptions. Damn it.)

I think that's probably true? Although the men who are worthwhile meeting also tend to be the ones who stand out and get noticed, because they have more to say initially. What I don't get is why this isn't happening already. Surely dating sites (I've never used one) tend to empower women to do just that? Is that not having an effect?
