  1. In Preferences (CTRL + P ) >> Sound & Media UNcheck Move avatar lips when speaking ETA: Ooops, wrong one (but that;'s a good one too.) In Preferences >> Chat UNcheck Play Avatar Animations.
  2. Here are a few possibilities........ Sometimes the viewer cache becomes corrupt; if this happens then you will find yourself crashing frequently. Try clearing it and see if that helps. It is recommended that you do this manually, as described here.Disable VBO: Run Firestorm and before logging in, press Ctrl-P to bring up the Preferences window. Then click on Graphics → Hardware Settings tab. Make sure that “Enable OpenGL Vertex Buffer Objects” is *not* checked.Disable HTTP Get Textures: Open the preferences window, then click on Graphics → Rendering tab. Make sure “Use HTTP Textures” is not checked. Please clear your cache if you change this setting. (If you are using LL's V3 viewer, you'll find this setting in your advanced menu (CRTL + Alt + D) )
  3. There aren't any Lindens here, but we can usually help. The "illegal character" problem is well known by now. You can read more about it here >>> https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-6608? and add your own observations if you have something to add that might help LL's developers cure the bug. Some people have apparently been able to solve the problem by entering Preferences from the login page (Type CTRL + P) and turning off the option to display the current active group tag, but that doesn't work for very many people. Short of filing a support ticket and getting LL's help, the best approach is to enter SL as an alt, find the group's owner, and ask her/him to eject you from the group.
  4. You can only wear one title at a time, because you can only have one group active at a time. However, you can wear a titler -- a scripted device that puts a line of floating text over your head. There are free titlers all over SL. Check any freebie shop or look online in Marketplace. I just typed the keyword "titler" into the search box in Marketplace and got 175 hits, many of which are free.
  5. The landscape changes fast enough in SL that I'm not very surprised that you can't go home. The sim might not even be there any more, and if it is, the owner would probably have returned your stuff a long time ago. Inventory is another matter, though. It ought to be still in the SL servers. If you haven't been around to access it for a long time, though, it may be filed away in some dark corner where you'll need a Linden to help find it. File a support ticket, selecting Account from its pulldown menu, and get their help. You will find that LL is much better about responding to tickets than they were in the "old" days, but it may still take a little while to get an answer. Be patient. Welcome back.
  6. Duplicate post. Asked and answered at http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Account/I-am-a-new-user-After-the-user-agreement-i-checked-to-agree-and/qaq-p/1168801
  7. I am not aware of studies or statistical analyses that would tell whether griefing is more or less common in SL today than in the past. I suspect that most information is anecdotal and more relevant to specific sims that to SL as a whole. In any case, although that's a good discussion question, it's not appropriate for SL Answers. We are all residents here, not Lindens, and we are here to answer basic questions and help troubleshoot technical problems you may be having. You might try posting it in General Discussion.
  8. That does not sound good. It sounds as if something has corrupted one of your viewer's files. If it happened to me, I would first do a full system scan with an anitvirus program (as you have) and would then probably do a clean re-installation of my SL viewer. See this wiki site >>> http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Clear_Cache or this one >>> http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/doku.php?id=fs_clean_reinstall to see how to remove not only the folder that contains your viewer's exe file, but also the folders that hold your user settings. Then download a fresh copy of your preferred viewer and install it. You will not lose any of your account information or inventoy, all of which is always stored on LL's servers and will be copied again to your new installation.
  9. Two different but related concepts: To verify your age, confirm that you are 18 years of age or older through the age verification web page. To set your Maturity Preference, so that you can enter sims or areas of the Marketplace that require Moderate or Adult rating, choose Me > Preferences and click on the General tab to choose the maturity rating of content you want to see.
  10. Try turning off Bump Mapping & Shiny. It's not worth screwing up your computer just to have that feature enabled.
  11. It has actually been going on since October 8. He doesn't respond to requests for more information, so there's no way to figure out what the problem is, or whether he is even reading our replies.
  12. We cannot restart your sim. We are all residents like you, not Lindens. When a sim owner or a Linden restarts a sim, it usually takes less than 10 minutes. You will not be able to log in to your sim or TP to it if it happens to be off line at the time, but you should be able to log on elsewhere in SL. Wait a few minutes and your sim will be back on line.
  13. Have you ever bought L$ before? If you have never bought L$, your trading limit has probably never been activated. Buying even a dollar or two should do the trick. Then you should be able to sell too.
  14. To prevent this from happening in the future, remember Rule #1 for personal security on the Internet: Never share your passwords or other account information with anyone.
  15. There usually aren't a lot of folder options in your Documents & Setting directory, so I can't imagine that it's all that hard to even open them at random until you find the right one. The username on your computer is the one that you use to log in with, when you open Windows. Unless you typed your own name in when you set up your computer, it may have defaulted to something generic like Administrator.
  16. You can oprn your Develop menu (CTRL + Alt + Q and click on Show Info >> Show Color Unde Cursor. That will put a real-time RGB display in the extreme lower right corner of your screen and let you monitor the color of whatever your cursor rests on. You should know, however, that any match you get will be fleeting. Color changes with time of day, sun angle, Windlight Settings ..... too many things to make your measurements reliable for more than a few seconds. Yoiu can get close, but that's all.

I'm glad you know what this means, Val.
  18. As you apparently recognize, this is a resident-to-resident forum. There are no Lindens here. If you have an idea for a new feature, the way to propose it is to create a JIRA report. Go to http://jira.secondlife.com and click the +Create Issue link in the upper right corner. Then choose the proper option from the drop-down menu for proposing a new feature.
  19. Have you tried each of the suggestions that we gave you the first time that you asked? Did you change viewers, for example?
  20. Set a timer, move up incrementally ( llSetPos(llGetPos() + <0.0,0.0,0.1>) ) until you reach a height limit, then reverse direction. Rinse and repeat. To save unnecessary server time usage when nobody is around, consider starting the timer when a visitor triggers a sensor of some kind, and then turn it off when there's no one there.
  21. Unfortunately, you may have tripped over a bug in the system. Take a look at https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-6608? and see if it feels like your problem. If so there's only one solution. You have to figure out how to leave whatever group you had active at the time you logged out. If you can go in as an alt, as Knowl suggested, try to contact the group's owner and explain that you need to be ejected from the group. If that doesn't work, you'll have to file a support ticket and see if LL can drop you from it.
  22. There are many reasons for that very common problem. What works for one person won't necessarily work for the next person, and it may not be the same thing that works for you tomorrow. See the full list of possibilitites here >>> http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/doku.php?id=fs_bake_fail . Start with the simple things at the top of the list and work down until you find what works for you today.
  23. You can try using the Map API >>> http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Map_API_Introduction . Look at the section on Accessing Map Images Directly and note that the highest zoom level (8) shows you the entire world.
