Can the terrain.raw be modified outside of SL?
IvyTechEngineer replied to IvyTechEngineer's question in Land
The mountain I want to move is @ http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/IvyTech Engineering Island/43/210/25 I want to elevate a mesh model of the terrain of this section up about 42 meters off the surface of the water and to flatten the existing terrain at the corner of the region. The terrain.raw file is here https://www.ivytechengineering.com/SecondLife/files/terrain.raw Thanks -
terrain import/export - issues

Thanks for your advice. I will explore further. I was thinking that based on some of the videos I was watching that maybe the terrain should be a greyscale image. Do not have admin rights on my school PC but I did download L3DT to my personal laptop. In Photoshop it looks like the RGB levels but the G channel is a constant 46 across the image. only the R channel changes. I have the If the G channel is just a constant 46 then it can be ignored and you should only need to scale the mesh in Blender because the multiplier would be a constant? Thanks -

Thank you for your post but I have found this topic very weird. Last night I couldn't sleep so thought I would download software that another user posted in another thread - Lindal Kidd say "There are a number of terrain generator software packages out there, and some of them are even free. See: https://listoffreeware.com/free-terrain-generator-software-windows/" so I I tried to download them. to include the L3DT software. I think only one would import a RAW file and I just got tired, nothing seemed to work... I was surprised at some posts that talked about Opensim and Unity. (When so far as downloading Opensim but not much further) Did find this link but couldn't figure out how to get the Blender addon for 2.8. https://blender.stackexchange.com/questions/53534/how-to-import-a-raw-model-into-blender I am a visual learner so I tired YouTube and also found these two videos I want to watch. May not answer my question but BLENDER 2.8x - TRUE TERRAIN ADDON! How to Create 3D Terrain with Google Maps and Blender! Also, I believe that I can open it in Photoshop which I have on my School computer... -
Can the terrain.raw be modified outside of SL?
IvyTechEngineer replied to IvyTechEngineer's question in Land
I tried downloading all these programs and one looks like it is missing. The other ones I could not figure out how to import the terrain.raw file. "Scene Terrain" appears to cost some money that I don't want to pay just to check it out. I tried to google "Blender import raw addon" and found some stuff that suggested downloading other programs but need to do some more digging to see what I can do. -

Hey, thanks for the info. Blender no longer support raw file imports? -

I want to float an mountain that is currently in our island and I do not know how remove the underwater part of it. -
I was wondering if the terrain.raw file could be modified outside of SL with some other free software package? Thanks

Hey, thanks for your help Rolin. There is much to learn. Next I want to add an image that is displayed when the button is selected. My end goal is to try to recreate some of the motor models that were part of the defunct Engineering Island for 2009 -
-
Thanks for your help. I was able to get a first version created and it works.
-
Ok, after a little false start I have the first version, which is not exactly perfect. But I am pretty happy with what I have so far. Probably I could have done everything in Blender with the exception of maybe the scripted parts.

Thank you for the advice and help. Yes I checked and I had two UVmaps on my cables. I had always thought that to add color to an object you needed a texture. I will attempt to use your first suggested approach for assign the model wire 2 materials. Thanks
-
Sorry, a follow up question for you. Thank you for your excellent advise. When I created the texture in Blender and saved it as a image, when I uploaded the model and select "include texture" the texture doesn't look like the uv map texture in Blender. The image is 1024x1024 ... Not sure what is going wrong. Have not had this issue with other models.

Sorry, ChinRey

This is exactly what I needed ... Thanks Aquila and CjinRey

Thank you and I agree that I was only focused on one cable. In terms of reducing the mesh I am trying to figure out "how to" do that in Blender.
-
Hello, Ok so I have added some cables to my DC motor model. The parts of the model I want to connect to in SL were linked together inworld and saved as a single DAE file to maintain spatial relationships. Then I added 4 cables in blender, but each cable only had two handles so I had to subdivide them in Blender. https://pasteall.org/blend/4e617f9018e747b0b6fc0bff2e53b9f6 You also need to convert each cable to meshes before you can texture them. The mesh models of the cables are larger than I like. Without mesh reduction one cable (with joined terminations) has: Vertices 3,708 Edges 7,110 Faces 3,504 Triangles 6,960 I have been rewatching some YouTube video of mesh reduction using decimation in Blender but the model is just way over defined. Suggestions? https://pasteall.org/blend/31c3efb3c5694343b8fe04a0779ff8b3
-
Ok, I think I need to convert the cables to mesh models before I can actually texture them. I also believe that I need to dramatically reduce the number of vertices and triangles in the model.
-
I was able to subdivide the cables to add more handles to contour them a little better. Not sure how to paint them? Also, if I delete the big green box and battery should I try to save each cable as a separate DAE with a texture or try to do everything together?

Ok so I have added some cables to my motor model. The parts of the model I want to connect to in SL were linked together inworld and saved as a DAE file. Then I added 4 cables, but each cable only had two handles and I couldn't figure out how to add more degrees of freedom to the cables. Not sure how to fix it. https://pasteall.org/blend/ffb5d2c90b0c44a49f2d44f0d6cab38c

I have been using a similar YouTube video but the mesh tri count is too large I think. Need to figure how to reduce them.
-
Thanks for the help ... now I need to figure out how to draw those cables in Blender.
-
Onward and upward, now to add some cables to the battery and texture to the battery and I should be done.
