  1. I use both BOM and appliers for my body, but I have to say I prefer the latter. I tend to be more visual when selecting what to wear, and applier HUDs can esily give me an idea of what things look like, as opposed to perusing through BOM layer names in my inventory and having no idea what they are.

And when I'm shopping and trying things on, the Maitreya HUD is the quickest and easiest way to hide parts because the HUD is right there on my screen. I don't have to open up my inventory to add or detach anything. And I'm not just talking about hiding body parts but also hiding parts of my applier clothing.

I use BOM for my skin to try balance out the performance side of things but appliers still seem more convenient for me.

  2. I would have assumed more detail = either larger textures or more polygons or both which then equates to more lag and resources to render/load?

IMO Lelutka's appeal is the shape of their heads. Whenever a Lelutka head has grabbed my attention, it's their realistic human look that did it. I've always just used my Catwa Catya but their free Lilly head is what got me to even consider Lelutka because of its beautiful shape rather than any of their HD features. I suspect most people choose their heads based on shape and also skin availability. All the other features are just extras really.

I love skin details like pores and freckles, even lip details but HD makeup is unnecessary IMO.

Obviously people can use whatever they want, but I've read some people's comments here on the forum saying they only take out their Legacy bodies only on their own home for picture taking to spare other people of lag, which I really appreciate, like A LOT. I guess I feel the same about HD - that level of detail doesn't add much value for everyday use so if they do cause more lag then that's something worth considering. Of course that's just my opinion.

I've been following the furnishing thread and it has educated me a bit more on triangles which I wasn't even aware of before. Most people don't talk or even think about triangles, but they do about lag. I wonder if they're aware of the relationship between the two.

  3. I know this pretty much comes down to personal choice but looking for some opinions on this. Since I joined sl, my main head has been Catwa Catya and it's the only one I have paid for. I like the shape and functionality, or maybe I've just gotten used to it. But I rarely see any new skins or makeup made for the older Catwa heads anymore - they're either made for other brands or the Catwa HDPro. I still buy things for my Catya head when they're on sale, like freckles, lip glosses, eyes etc. But I'm starting to think that I'm wasting lindens on an outdated head that I'm going to have to replace eventually. And I don't want to be in a position where I've got too much stuff supporting my old head that it's too painful to move on to a new one. What do you think? Is it a waste of money to keep dressing up an old product?

(I'm not actually concerned about the head being old. I just get the feeling it has become irrelevant or redundant because of the new HDPro.)

  4. @Doc CarlingThere's no point debating whether or not those avs represent humans. You clearly don't think so and it's fine. It's a matter of perspective. For me, I have met people who are disfigured by birth or from a tragic accident and personally I wouldn't make such a blunt comment about appearance like that. That's just me.

But even talking just about computer graphics, it's still kind of a mean thing to say. I wouldn't go up to someone and tell them their av looks rubbish. Even if they look nothing like that irl, it's still not nice. They might have worked hard on their av or it's their way of expressing themselves, their way of enjoying sl and someone just makes a judgemental comment like that. This is, after all, a thread to post "ugly" avatars, not to criticize or judge them.

That's just my perspective though. You don't have to agree.

  5. There are people who could very much look like the avatar that has been slagged on. So when someone says "that avatar is a nightmare", if it's about a fictional being like some robot or goblin, then whatever. But it was directed towards an overweight woman avi, that could be insensitive. There are people sitting behind computers who may feel they actually do resemble that "nightmare". I'm sure the comment wasn't intentionally being mean, but it was mean nonetheless.

I'm not commenting real life looks. I have no right to do that. And nobody is perfect. Neither I. :) But I apologize, to express an inner self with an Avatar is a little bit to much for me. I was part of the so called good old days in SL. The avatars looked as good as they could depending on the limited technical options. One was forced to accept this. That's different in times of mesh. It is hard for me to imagine that someone can enjoy to look like on your picture.  Because something is sure, the most people react with an OMG on it. Even when they aren't honest to say it loud like I do.

It's ok to not like the look of an av. But you were wrong to speak for everyone else and assume we're all thinking what you're thinking, and that we're just not honest in saying it. No, we're not thinking the same thing. Different looking avs, especially the odd or ususual ones, bring a smile to my face. It makes me think someone has a sense of humor, is adventurous, inventive and interesting. It makes SL more fun and exciting to not be surrounded by only fashion models and to not just focus on making pretty avatars. Sure, making my av pretty is fun too, but to only have one aspect in a virtual world would be boring.

As a human, I tend to attract guys who want to hook up. But I've made more fun friends when I'm suited up in something weird. That kind of thing does show you what people are after.

  7. I've always lived on mainland and never had any problems. If my neighbours set up stuff I don't like, I just derender/blacklist. But not every viewer has that function so that sucks.

In reality not everyone shares the same tastes so you're never going to like all your neighbours' things. And they're not going to like all of your things. There's no point trying to compromise or get them to adjust to your preferences. Just accept and ignore. That's how I do mainland.

    Hi Feral,

Firstly, i just would like to say im very sorry for the nuisance you are currently experiencing. I agree when people say its mainland and people have a right to put in their parcel what they choose, however, there is a level of respect and obligation to respect your fellow residents this common sense rule applies with living in Secondlife as well as living in RL.

In my opinion  your neighbour's wall is very offensive and rude, the intruding wall has basically shut out any feeling of wanting to confront your neighbour in a civil manner to even discuss, hense his response to you is just as blocking and obnoxious in his attitude as well as his ridiculous wall.

Unfortunately i am experiencing the exact same treatment. Prior to my experience i have never come across such vindictive treatment from a person. I moved into my dream area to build a small marina on a open sailing sim. i was editing my home on the terrain trying to blend in the scenery and the landowner behind me decided to drop a 62 meter high Rock house directly behind me.

this Rock house has blocked out all my views and sky views. I asked her politely to lower the home she said she would but she decided to raise the home even higher. After no attempt was made to lower the home i wrote her a note card explaining to her in a polite manner that her rock house is taking away the enjoyment from my land hoping she would please lower it.

when i came online the next day she had now erected two extra large water rock water falls on either side of the rock house and completely blocked off my parcel. I couldn't believe it. Not only had she done that she then proceeded to return any landscaping items i.e palm trees that i rezzed to try and soften the monstrosity as the leaves were slightly hanging onto her land also terrain i placed that was under the ground she destroyed that too by returning it to me.

she banned me from her land and also she is now banning my renters from her land and they have absolutely nothing to do with this!.

i decided enough was enough i banned her, muted her and derendered her objects and rezzed a 62m mega prim with a bright glowing orange colour on her side and translucent on my side, ( please note this will only affect her as she owns most of the sim behind me). i have sent endless support tickets to LL and they did not even respond to me!!, its absolutely disgraceful. I wont take down the colour prim until she plays fair, which will probably be never.

I asked around about her and i was told she has done this countless times to others that live and have lived in the area, she has about 50 people banned from her land. Its just wrong that LL don't do anything to help when ultimately they are the only ones who can fix this, its very frustrating indeed.

Goodluck Feral, i hope your neighbour will soon see some reason.

@Zanna Zadark I don't see why you didn't just derender whatever was blocking your view in the first place like you eventually did. There actually is no obligation to "respect" your neighbours, aside from the requirement to follow actual rules. It's no surprise that your support tickets have not amounted to anything because your neighbour has not actually broken any rules.

Nothing wrong with asking your neighbours for favours the way you did. But they are favours and you shouldn't have any expectations that they'd accommodate you. Everything else that has happened afterwards is just a war that you have an equal part in.

In my experience, the way to have peaceful neighbours is to be one.

For about 6 months one of my adult venues is being pestered by a griefer. He started by kicking around guests at my place, but once I caught him doing that I banned him.

Then he came back with larger equipment. He managed to kick my guests again while he himself was outside my venue, standing on neighboring land. He uses some sort of tool with a huge prim that he swipes through my venue, thus kicking out all the avi's that are not sitting on anything. And because I have already banned him, there is nothing I can do about it.

Now I've sent several abuse reports about this person. I found several of his alts and named them too in the abuse reports. I added pictures of him hanging right next to my skybox, I made pictures of the griefing tools he uses, I mentioned the names of the tools and the creators. I filed these abuse reports several times.

You'd think that something would be done about it. But no. The guy is still around and today he was again griefing my place, kicking guests out and annoying everyone.

I asked LL's Live Chat about this, and they gave me some bogus answer about the Governance Team working on abuse reports and them not being able to reveil anything due to privacy.

I've been around in SL for 14 years now and I have had several successful and busy venues. Over the years I have experienced several times that griefers could be active for a very long time, despite lots of abuse reports against them. Which brings me to wonder: how does this Governance Team work? How do they deal with abuse reports? What sort of proof or evidence do they need to actually give a temporary or permanent ban to a griefer?

Can someone explain this to me?

I can't tell you what happens behind the scenes since I don't know, but I can tell you from my experience that abuse reports do get looked at. I had someone stop pestering me after I AR'd them. I would suggest including as much evidence you can gather like chat logs if you have any. Or maybe next time he does this, record it using gyazo gif or something and include the link in your AR.

Someone once told me if more people submit an AR, the better. I don't know how true that is but I guess it doesn't hurt to try.

  9. @AltynTagh Honestly it's not worth changing your complete sl over one person. That person will get over it and find something else to obsess over, just give it time. If you like your new av, then use her and ignore the stalker. Who cares if he knows when you're logged on. Unless he constantly shows up wherever you are, then it's not worth worrying about. Use the sl tools available to you - block/derender/abuse report.

What you all fail to consider is what this actually implies in terms of workload.

If I understand right, this is an item that uses an external database (provided by a 3rd party even) for user identification so I'll use that scene as an example.

Solution 1 is to have the merchant(s) update database entries manually every time somebody contacts them about a name change. How much time is that? Well, try yourself. Let's say somebody named Cory Ondrejka contacts you, tells you he used to be Eric Linden and asks you to update the thingie he bought from you so it works with his new name. First thing you have to do is check that the two UUIDs match (and let's do it with the official viewer where the UUID isn't on the profile popup). Yes, it seems to match... No WAIT! (For those not familiar with SL history, Cory Ondrejka and Eric Linden were two of the original LL crew and probably the two people who more than anybody else deserve credit for getting SL to work at all. More important in this context though, they have very similar UUIDs, a2e76fcd-9360-4f6d-a924-000000000002 and a2e76fcd-9360-4f6d-a924-000000000006 respectively.)

Once you have confirmed the UUIDs match, you have to find a way to update the database, a database that was never made to support such updates.

Would you do it? I probably would but I certainly wouldn't expect anybody else to be that stupid.

To add insult to injury, you have to do this job for free whiel you know LL is boosting their already bloated bottom line from these name changes. The average merchant-creator has no reason to love LL and lots of reasons not to. Of all the demographic groups in SL I'm a part of or familiar with, the serious small/medium sized creator-merchant is by far the one who got the worst deal from them.

    ---

Solution 2 is of course to upgrade the database to work with UUIDs rather than account names. I can't help notice that at least two prominent scritpers (one of them is even a Mole) gave likes to LittleMe Jewel's brainless heckling post so maybe one of them can explain how easy that would be?

Since we don't know the exact details in the OP's casem l et's create a case study with some credible figures:

    • Database has been operational for ten years
    • It serves 50 different merchants
    • It serves 250 different products (5 per merchant on average)
    • It has 100,000 entries, each with the customer's user name and about 50 fields with various info about their purchase(s)
    • 250 different scripts in SL calls on the database. How many copies of these script there are in circulation is anybody's guess.

Please give us the upgrade by lunch tomorrow and make sure there are no bugs and no inconveniences for any of our clients or their customers.

    ---

Solution 3 is to throw in the handkerchief and give up. Close down that database and maybe even leave SL. That would mean every single copy of every single product that relies on it will be broken.

I'm not a scripter so forgive me if my thoughts on this are a little "brainless", but I'm of the opinion that if the creator is still selling a product that is still relying on account names rather than uuid, then that product is in itself outdated. I can understand not providing free updates to a retired product. Otherwise, the creator should probably update it to be compatible with current mechanisms. To continue to sell it without the capacity to work with name changes doesn't seem right, unless it is stated in their product description that there'll be a charge for every name change so that people are fully aware.

  11. Maybe I haven't been in sl long enough to know about all the drama. I guess I'm coming from the perspective of wanting more information. Before I buy from a new website irl or even visit a new restaurant, my default first step is to google them and check out reviews. To me that's just natural.

By now I know all the main sl brands so I know who to trust, but as a newcomer there really isn't much to go by. There are some brands that are known for their shady practices that we mainly know of through word of mouth - something that doesn't reach everybody. I don't see how a review system would hurt here, aside from the challenge of making it legit and drama-free.

Mp reviews - not everything is on mp, and reviews can be deleted by removing the listing.

True, I can imagine something like this turning into a negative, toxic mess, but perhaps the naive and idealistic part of me is open to the idea.

  12. I personally find some wound marks give a bit of realism. Definitely not black eyes or cig burns. But irl, my skin's not airbrushed to perfection like sl skin. I give myself scratch marks and bruised knees all the time! To me at least, not all wounds represent abuse. That's also probably why the "realistic" look might mean different things to different people.

  13. I personally think this is a good thing. At a glance, it seems like an attempt to have a rating system on sl businesses, which is something we are lacking. Maybe it will work, maybe it won't but what we are currently (not) provided with is not sufficient so at least someone is trying.

They can't call themselves "Secondlife Better Business". That breaks paragraph 1.1 of the TOS.

LL can't have someone operating with their trademarked name. This SLBB could probably get around it by renaming themselves something unrelated.

Do they pass by using "secondlife" instead of "second life"?

should this ever eventuate then I wouldn't mind if SL ownership was broadened. Like some kind of share offering in which residents could partake. I would like to own some small share of SL the company if it ever became possible, and am sure there would be other residents who would feel/do the same. Not that I expect being a owner would give me anything extra in terms of being a resident. I would buy a share (if I could) just to have a deeper relationship with the SL world than I have now

I do like the idea of sl being owned by people who actually care about sl.

I'm not insane, I just wasn't well informed, and one can't rely on a site like sl secrets for good information. I saw his stuff on the marketplace, saw that it was popular and just bought it thinking well, if it's on the mp with all these reviews, how bad can it be?  (Btw, turns out I did purchase the sploder from the MP and did leave a negative review, he found a way to flag it and have it removed). I did manage to say something on his free stuff, it doesn't have the same effect but eh, its something.

I hope with this new financial group that has acquired linden labs, that they will find a way to rate businesses in world, the way we do on the MP.

That is such a shame that stores can flag (legitimate) reviews. One more reason why the mp review system is so flawed.
