  1. Yeah I don't think anyone really cares about a new logo and it should be very low priority to the point where they shouldn't have announced it to begin with, especially when it's not actually going to be actioned. It's about managing perception and expectations. A logo isn't really something to care about but by making an announcement, they sent the signal that they wanted people to care.

Everyone messes up, but you just don't want it becoming a pattern. Better to under-promise and over-deliver IMO.

Amazon, Hulu, Netflix, Disney and a whole host of others also implemented fee increases.  Are they updating anything?  The fee increase for purchasing Ls is, in my opinion, an across the board increase that will effect the most users instead of dumping it all on premium members or land owners.  Just as in RL, as region owners (landlords) get an increase in taxes, they'll pass that on to tenants.  It's how the world works.  At the end of the day, LL and Tilia is in business TO MAKE MONEY.

I would not have thought to compare SL to those. Amazon, Netflix, Disney - they do keep up to date, they are updating to keep up with current trends and technology constantly. They are popular, they are growing. When they increase fees, I doubt they lose customers. It makes sense to pay more for services that are up to date. But if what they offered was poor and slow, and things kept breaking, and they hike up fees, well of course it's their business decision, but they risk losing customers. It's good business sense to offer something great and then price accordingly. Supply/demand.

I love SL, but it is ageing and on many levels outdated. Yes, it is a for-profit company and people are obviously happy to pay for it. But there is a point beyond which people would not be comfortable paying more for, and the tricky part for LL is to know where that point is. 7.5% is an aggressive hike, but I'm sure they did their sensitivity analysis on that decision. It's very possible that people would just stop spending here if they feel it's too expensive for virtual goods.

While my first post in this thread was along the lines of "happy to pay more if there are improvements", which can sound entitled, what I really mean is, if I felt that the owners are just trying to squeeze SL dry and drive it to the ground, then I'd just walk away now. SL is a source of entertainment, a luxury, but for many, it is also an investment. Everything you buy here is a form of investment. I wouldn't keep investing in something if I knew it was just going to take people's money and close its doors tomorrow (for example). That's what I mean by wanting to see improvements. I want to see SL to keep going and I want to pay more for it to grow, but their recent moves have not done well for confidence in LL. And while it is a for-profit company, people do choose which businesses they give their money to, mostly based on how much value they perceive getting out of it. People don't blindly pay businesses just because it's a business and they need profit.

Don't get me wrong, I do agree with you re: profit and increased costs. There's just another side to it is all (from a customer's POV).

You want me to believe that in the US common people can enter a company's office and demand their financial papers, files and reports whenever they want?  And that if a customers wants, the company hat to tells him their profits/losses. C'mon. You are kidding.  If that is usual business in the US how could former president Trump hide his financial situation for years?

I think you might be missing the point. This is feedback from their userbase that if they want to gain or maintain customer trust, loyalty and retention, then transparency is key. I mean, don't you look through all your fees for, say, your healthcare? Don't you look at the ingredients of your fruit juice? It's not absurd to want to know what you are paying for.

From what I remember, the gacha was just listed as the rare item (the building), not parts of it. It was even at a usual rare item price. I really feel like this was a scam since only the door was delivered the first time, and then it looked as if the second door sent was the other side of that entrance (a double door, right and left side for entrance). I asked for a resend of the building and instead he gave me another door. They even open opposite ways and such. This is why it felt like a prank and a scam because if it was a redelivery of the same product, he would send me the exact door. I was also clear in my first IM that I expected a whole building, so I am pretty sure he is scamming.

I will look into the ticket system. Thank you for the response!

Mistakes like this one could very much be unintentional. It is possible that the building had several unlinked parts that he had forgotten about. It could help if you sent him a link to a picture of the item, tell him he only sent you the doors and ask if he could check his inventory or mp folder for the other parts. Something similar happened to me too and it turned out to be a genuine mistake.

Okay! Good morning!  I'm back at the keys, and I'm going to try to get through everything. Starting here.

As mentioned above, Oz has explained that our maintenance costs have actually gone UP in AWS, not down. Running our own datacenter was fairly efficient (because we owned the hardware, rather than renting it) so long as the machines were up to date and didn't need to be replaced. However, that does mean that every so often, there's a massive expenditure required to replace all the machines. In the AWS model, that expense is defrayed over time, rather than all at once (plus a surcharge of course for the privilege). The end result from a purely financial perspective is that moving to AWS is more expensive for us month-to-month, but does not require occasional massive one-time cost spikes like running the datacenter did. From an engineering and infrastructure perspective, running Second Life in AWS opens up huge opportunities (and creates additional challenges) that we're only just now beginning to explore.  We're very excited for the future.

Can I ask for more clarity on this because the cost comparison in the above explanation is a bit questionable. If you're to compare monthly costs of running own datacenter vs AWS, shouldn't the monthly depreciation of that "one-time cost spike" (to replace machines) be included in your comparison to monthly expenditure of AWS? The above explanation seems to ignore the costs of replacing machines in the datacenter to then arrive at the conclusion that AWS costs more. What I'm trying to say is, you can't exclude that massive expenditure in replacing machines from your cost comparison and then conclude that AWS month-to-month expenditure is higher. It actually has to be included. Hope that makes sense. Maybe I read your explanation wrong so just asking for clarity. Maybe you're just talking about monthly cashflow?

  7. I'm all for higher fees if it means there will be improvements, but I'm quite sceptical. We've seen price increases in the last couple of years but only promises of improvements. Functionality has actually gone downhill, which is quite the opposite. If they consider EEP as an example of improvement.. then I really wish they had spent that money elsewhere, like these new objectives, which to me all sounds much too vague for comfort anyway:

    At present we are:

    • Investing in our infrastructure to further improve speed and cadence of updates.
    • Overhauling the onboarding experience for the newest Residents.
    • UI cleanup.
    • Developing new marketing initiatives and entertainment partnerships to fuel growth.
    • Preparing for SL18B
    • Less glamorous but no less crucial is our ongoing and growing work to ensure compliance with multiple regulatory requirements.

Preparing for SLB18? I mean wow, that actually made it to the list of things our fee hike is paying for?

  8. Of all the shaming of necroposters, I rarely (if ever) see them referring to the information being outdated. I mean, I get that it can be the case, but I think the hate for necroposters is far greater than the actual reasoning. More of a cultural thing IMO. I personally prefer information being in one place. When I search something, I'd rather open up one thread and just read the latest comments instead of having several threads about the same thing.

Guess I'm just trying to figure out where the "normal" lies with avatars and realism, and decide my personal spectrum from there.

That depends on where you go. There are avatars of all kinds, shapes, and sizes, so maybe have a look at the avis around you when you are inworld to get a sense of your "normal".

But I wouldn't advise you to aim for what everyone else is doing. Try your avi in both versions for a bit to see what feels better for you. Also, many people change their looks every now and then. You can do that too.

Like, do you ever worry that someone from RL would recognize you and hold everything you do in SL against you in RL?

If I saw an avatar that looked a lot like my mom, I wouldn't assume the person behind that av was actually my mom! So no, you don't have to worry about that. No one's going to be like "Hey I know you!" based on what your avatar looks like.

So, that only shows the subject of the thread is good.
There are so many new posts already that it is no longer really necro.
Recycled is a better definition IMHO.

True, personally I don't mind necros but after being on this forum for a while I noticed others think it's a mortal sin, so I get embarrassed when I accidentally reply to one 🙊

This is not meant for the thread of how does your avatar look today. It looks fine, a tad under the weather, but will survive.

I'm hoping someone will recognize this set piece, consists of a ladder, a hanging sheet in a box. I may have accidentally deleted it (or forgot its name) and where I purchased it (to ask for a redelivery).

I'm not posting for advertising reasons, just want to get the pose stand (it can be called that). Any help would be appreciated.

I think it takes older skins very well...

The issue with old skins is that I have to buy "fixes" to remove black eyeline and that black "lump" that is in the inner eye corner. Pre mesh head era had skins with eyeliner into the corners, period.

Where do you get these fixes from? Just izzie's or somewhere else too?

Hello everyone. I am a returning citizen who has been away for a few years. As with many other people, the pandemic and staying home brought me back to SL. I have been playing for a month and I know that some people do not open up to ppl that just arrived. I do have my old account that should be around 10 or 11 years old. I decided not to update my old account and start fresh. Should I connect my old account to my new account via profile so people know Im not some alt trying to play them? Does it matter? Would that change anything? Thank you.

It shouldn't matter. You can always just put something in your profile to tell people you're back in sl after a long hiatus. I see that in profiles quite a lot and it doesn't make those new accounts seem sus at all because it's normal for people to take breaks and they're being open about it.

You've spent money on your new account already. I'd say don't turn back.

  14. So in reference to a comment I made in another thread...

    https://community.secondlife.com/forums/topic/469768-market-crash-update-ll-unchrashed-it/?do=findComment&comment=2274670

... I'm just showing the gift I mentioned there that came in the form of a delivery HUD (technically a gift card) that not only gives you the gift but also adds the gift to your redelivery page. The vendor used for this gift was CasperVend so I'm not sure if others can do the same.

I've also heard some people say that the only way you can get registered for redeliveries for a gift is to pay the vendor L$1 and then have it refunded back to you, but I'm pretty sure I've seen gifts do it without the L$1 payment.

Anyway, sorry in advance if everyone knows this stuff already.

I don't think vendors work that way. The "owner" would need to get paid. Since you would be the "owner" of such a hud you'd just be paying yourself and redelivery wouldn't work.

I've gotten a few group gifts that came in the form of a delivery hud, where you click on it and it registers with the vendor. There is a gift (from Jinx) at TLC event currently that does that with CasperVend.

  16. Well I think all the complaining has to do with the short timeframe. There weren't really complaints when it came to other brands giving away free heads because they gave people plenty of time. It's just human nature to panic when there's a limited amount of anything. If you're going to do a one day thing, then be prepared for all sorts. Simple cause and effect.

We are talking about a 1L$ object not a 1000 Euro investment.

What's your point though? This is an SL forum, most things here won't meet that benchmark of a 1000 Euro investment.

  18. If it was given via group notices, the only problem might be that people won't be able to get updates.

Might have been a better strategy to offer both in store and mp to lighten the load, or make it available for more than a day so it reaches more people. And I'm not saying this from the perspective of "give more freebies to more people". It's more from a business/brand strategy.

When I got the Freya head, I thought it was a great head. But it disappeared completely after the gift period and its relevance was short-lived. No one really makes anything for that head now. But with the Lelutka head, that gift had a real lasting impact. It's a beautiful head that reached enough people to gain a bigger market share and has a huge presence even after it stopped being a gift.

  19. Careful people, if you keep refreshing your purchase may duplicate.

I kept refreshing and the head was still in my cart (still is actually). Next thing I know, I was asked to purchase more lindens because the purchase went through a few times already 🙈
