Never said it was perfect, but we have to start somewhere. At least some people have some rights, and we have a basis to encourage people not to throw others off buildings.

Human rights are an attempt to make the world a better place. So many more have freedom, or are gaining freedoms, that did not exist before. Think of gay rights, or women's rights, or minority rights. I'm glad people are paying attention to respect for all and trying to bring about a fairer world, no matter how imperfect or daunting the effort may seem at this time. 1. We Are All Born Free & Equal. We are all born free. We all have our own thoughts and ideas. We should all be treated in the same way. 2. Don’t Discriminate. These rights belong to everybody, whatever our differences. 3. The Right to Life. We all have the right to life, and to live in freedom and safety. 4. No Slavery. Let's say I was captured by some nasty government and imprisoned because I was a feisty woman and gay to boot, and their intent was to "beat the gay" out of me or "show me I am subservient to men". They may imprison me, they may beat me, but I would still experience myself as gay and believe I was a free woman not subservient to others (I would still have those human rights no matter what others would do to me). I'm not sure where you get the idea that a right is only a right if someone can force the issue. If another is trying to take a right away it only means they are misguided and not respectful of human rights.

You cannot NOT base human rights on ethics: "Human rights are moral principles or norms[1] that describe certain standards of human behaviour and are regularly protected as natural and legal rights in municipal and international law.[2] They are commonly understood as inalienable,[3] fundamental rights "to which a person is inherently entitled simply because she or he is a human being"[4] and which are "inherent in all human beings",[5] regardless of their nation, location, language, religion, ethnic origin or any other status." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_rights The fact that some countries can't accept the fact that, for example, women and gays should have the same rights as everyone else is irrelevant. All you can really say about these countries is that they do not believe in human rights at this time.

Kanray do you believe in the concept of "might makes right", like in evolution? Is that the only ethics that seems plausible to you?

Not at all as different cultures have very different standards of ethics many of which contradict each other. The human race has never managed to create a universally recognised ethics nor will it ever I said that what we call human rights is derived from our ethics (you said I was conflating the 2, and I'm not). I didn't say anything about the fact that different cultures have varying standards regarding what is ethical. I would say, though, that if a particular culture thinks the bigger kid should get all of the orange just because he can, that this culture is wrong. Fairness and justice should prevail whenever possible because it demonstrates that we value all and not just one bully that can turn "might makes right" into their reality.

Human rights are derived from ethics.

Let's say you are in kindergarten class, and all the kiddies are sitting in a circle, and hungry. The teacher only has one orange, and puts it in the center of the circle. Is it right for the big kid who had some abnormal growth spurt and was double in size to the rest of the class, to grab the orange and eat it all himself, just because he could? Or is he right to divide it into sections and give everyone a piece?

Yeah, actually we do, LOL; it's called the Covenant. And it specifically states "*Residents may decorate the interior of their house to their liking." Full stop. Of course we have the right to do what we want, and it says so in the covenant. The discussion is about what it means when another person imitates them completely. What would you do if a friend imitated how you dressed, and I mean down to the exact same piece of clothing and hairstyle. What if they showed up for public events you both attended looking just like you when they knew in advance what you planned to wear. My reaction would be a desire to get them to think more for themselves, learn to be their own person more, and not copy others. There is no ruling that can be made about this. I'm only saying I DO understand those who would wish another would not copy them completely. Sharing is great, to a point.

There is a 3rd way, and that is simply the discussion that is now happening. The OP simply said it was just her 2 cents worth, and I don't see her calling for a ruling although it is evident what she believes. Seems she just wanted a discussion about it as we are doing. Can't you believe one way and me another, and allow this? Do we have to have some sort of rule that encodes one side as the one true way? That would not be the "sharing" that you advocate.

Why? Do you decorate to please yourself, or to compete with others? If the former, it shouldn't matter what others are doing. I'd say I decorate to please myself, but that includes the desire to be a bit unique. I think most people want to be somewhat unique in home furnishings or with clothes. Imagine you showed a friend this new outfit you put together and the next day the friend shows up with the exact blouse, skirt, shoes, and even hairstyle. You would not feel like maybe that friend needed to get a little space from you or something, or wonder if they were turning into one of those Borg people on Star Trek with a hivemind type of thing going on? hehe

I'd be weirded out by it, especially if it was next door! I know, I'd feel like maybe I had a stalker! hehe

I can comprehend getting inspiration from taking a peek at what a neighbor did and use a few ideas. But to copy it exactly, every piece of furniture, every outside element, the colors of the home, all outside elements placed exactly the same, so that it looks exactly the same as the one you've designed as a kind of cookie-cutter home next to the one you created, well this seems very strange. Not illegal, but I'd be annoyed.

A design is unique. Choosing how to arrange your personal home, matching items, this makes your home unique. I enjoy strolling through Bellisseria and viewing how many homes differ depending on the home owners design. Does not matter if they are purchased items another created because each design is different. I see immense creativity going on in Bellisseria from the way a home owner decides what to purchase and in the implementation of their choices.
