    Stupid question from me.

So I put on a saved outfit and use all the huds to get where I want with it. Because I usually save the huds with the outfit.

Then I detach the huds. Does this reduce my impact?

If I detach the huds and re-save the outfit does that make a difference?

It reduces your lag, and potentially the response time of scripts around you. When sailing, for example, people are generally told to remove all things scripted, as the vehicles' scripts plus a bunch of avatar scripts can cause all sorts of problems. Having a receiver script in your hair when clubbing probably won't be a huge thing though (as the script basically just says 'Hi, I'm X - if you run a script aimed at X, I will react to it). Resizing scripts and such can be more intense however.

I don't generally care to remove all my scripts when out and about, unless I'm going to an event or a club, in which case I will create a copy of the items in my outfit that I want to remove the scripts from, and put them in a folder for that particular outfit. Neph's event-going getup contains no scripts aside from her body and head, using the Firestorm AO, and has a complexity of less than 25,000.

Until someone comes up with a hud that does something different/a more efficient way

       There is a better way.

Instead of putting the button's texture on the button itself, meaning it has to be a separate face with a separate texture, you make a HUD with just -one- texture, which in it has all the buttons painted on it. Then, when you put the HUD together, you just put invisible prims on top of each button, with a script connecting it to the HUD itself and carrying out whichever command you want it to do (i.e. 'Apply <insert UUID> to <insert item, and which face if applicable>).

That way, a HUD only needs one single texture (unless it has several pages). The amount of scripts, well, you'll need one for each button regardless - but they're usually fairly short, and it might be good practice (and manners) to put together your outfit, select the colours, apply your alphas, and so forth, and then detach any HUDs before actually heading out to crowded places (which may be slightly off-topic, but it can't be repeated enough apparently, judging by how people are running around with enough script memory on them to accommodate the Skynet).

More often than not, poor optimization in SL is largely due to ignorance or laziness of the creator, rather than 'SL is too limited'. Like, how do some of the really popular creators in SL get away with meshed lemon slices with 2,000 triangles in them, each, individually? No wonder people are having lag problems when there's junk like that strewn across the grid. I sit quite cozily on 180 FPS in my skybox, with all settings cranked to 11 - because I'm picky with what goes in there.

I take it we shouldn't become pen pals then ... Those squares are 5 mm (roughly 5 squares per inch, for those across the pond!). The x-height is 1.5 mm, and it's written with a mechanical pencil with a 0.3 mm gauge.

... But think of all the paper I save!

Don't the creators understand that it's a plus if a HUD is only as large as it needs to be? And why don't more HUDs have the ability to be minimized?

And what's with creators making HUDs that use separate textures for each and every button (especially colouring HUDs for apparel and such), all of course in much higher resolution than necessary, rather than just making a single texture with all of the components in it? HUD texture memory over-usage happens much too often. Or creators who still, in this day and age, use unpacking scripts that include the script itself, or require you to wear a bag which will break your AO and then copies the pose itself into your inventory when there are free scripts that with one click unpacks everything except the script itself, and works whether you wear the box on your HUD, avatar or rez it?!

I feel like our two photos together (mine posted right below yours) created a story! :)  You were out there shoveling away, while I snuck back inside, made coffee, snuck back in and got all cuted up and made cookies instead of shoveling. I think there would be a lot of good-hearted grumbling, eye-rolling and cookie eating.

Meanwhile, Tati was off goofing around in the snow.

The best elimination of neck seams is to set your Windlight to calWL or turn off materials and basic shaders. But this will only ever work for you because everyone uses different windlight setting and some (like myself) prefer to just go with region windlight and day-cycles.

Or getting a dom/me who puts a tall posture collar on you!

Jokes aside, we can never control how our avatars will be perceived by others, due to differences in graphic settings and what windlights people use. The neck seam is a thing, unless you get a body with the head attached to it, and has had the skin texture exported along with the UV from the mesh creation program. Everyone has them, some more noticeable than others, but it's just something we'll have to accept as part of the SL reality. For photography, editing them is a breeze, and they can easily be concealed through the use of accessories if so desired.

  7.    Where does one find menswear these days? It's a common, often quite infected question. I know of some stores that I like, and some that I don't much care for. So, I thought that perhaps those of us who shop for menswear could help each other by compiling a list of stores that we enjoy. Please don't invoke a thread lock by flaming about any specific store being 'terribad', no naming & shaming here!

I'm going to start off with 3 stores because, whilst I know of more, I don't want to 'hog them all' in the first post (or deter people with a text wa-- yeah there's no escaping that anyway I reckon).

Deadwool: No surprises here. Deadwool makes very high quality apparel, where the effort and attention to detail is very apparent, both in the mesh and in the textures.
Style: A bit mixed as of late, whilst their focus used to be in 19thC 'Western' apparel (the store's name being an apparent reference to a certain TV series), they've made some interesting modern pieces of a more casual fashion. If you're looking for your first suit, Deadwool should certainly be on your list for consideration. Also, if you want a nice pair of shoes that works well for casual and formal alike, don't miss out on their Oxfords (which, are also rigged for some female bodies).
Sizes: Gianni, Geralt, Jake and Slink for their latest releases (some of their earlier products are standard sizes only, but well worth a demo regardless as some things may well fit anyway!).
Price: I'd say that in this case, you get what you pay for. If you want to deck yourself out with fatpacks of everything, it may be a fairly pricey trip!
       Store:
    http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Fingal/52/147/34

ContraptioN: Contraption offers a wide range of both apparel and accessories, for both men and women, and specialize primarily in Steampunk (Victorian) apparel. The accessories alone are amazingly varied!
Style: Victorian and Edwardian apparel, mostly rigged for men (but some pieces come rigged for the ladies, too). Both high-end aristocratic outfits and workers' outfits.
Sizes: Gianni, Geralt, Jake - though due to the nature of their apparel (i.e. being pretty much 'covers just about everything except your hands and throat'), using the 'wrong' size can work.
Price: Very affordable. No buying single colours here; you get the entire product in all its colours and sizes with a single purchase - and, it's all mod, so that you can tint colours and mess around with the materials if you so please.
       Store:
    http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Ministry of Invention/117/67/119

Cold Ash: A great store for more 'casual' modern apparel, without ending up looking like a 'bro' or 'bum'.
Style: They seem to be focused mostly on shirts in various styles, button-ups, polo shirts, T-shirts. Things you'd expect to see 'regular' people wear on a weekday. They also have some other things, a few different kinds of trousers, and accessories, and such.
       Sizes: Jake and Gianni.
Price: Decent. Getting a shirt and trousers to start off with from here isn't going to put an owie in your wallet, unless you want to go wild and hog fatpacks of everything you can see.
       Store:
    http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Cold Ash/173/197/35

I hope to see others chime in with their picks (yes, I'm looking at you, @Skell Dagger). Having explored today I found some stores that, whilst perhaps not 'for me', certainly carry some interesting inventory - but it made me think, maybe there are some hidden gems out there yet?

Thank you. I appreciate what you've done with your Gianni arms. What was your approach in slimming them down?

In the torso tab, when editing the shape, put the muscularity to something very low. This affects the arms, neck and pectorals by some amount, but the main focus is the biceps. You don't need to go higher than a single digit, or low double digits. And also the shoulder width being low, to give you a sleeker look.

I don't know where to begin with mesh clothing. Menswear options have always seemed in short supply (hence my circa 2012 wardrobe). My style would probably be considered classic, clean cut, or smart casual: polished and tailored. I prefer sweaters and trousers, sport coats and turtlenecks, dark jeans, leather shoes, that sort of thing.

Aye, this is largely the same kind of apparel I'm on the look-out for. ColdAsh has some such apparel, Deadwool for formals (they've got some nice suits, and a very nice pair of Oxford shoes), FashionNatic has a few items that may be of interest (although the majority of it feels a bit too ... I don't even know what to call it. Futuristic, kinda?). Some will suggest Gabriel, and I do like their designs - but the textures I just can't stand, they're frequently so flat that it just looks terrible.

Personally I also enjoy CX (mostly for accessories and jewelry), ContraptioN (Steampunkish/Victorian-Gothic apparel), Hotdog (some very interesting outfits from a quite varied selection, but somehow ... Burtonesque, I suppose?), and PFC (Fantasy, some of it looks a bit 'Gor', but they've got an amazing toga!).

  9.    Hm, seems you've got bodies covered. After having worn my Geralt for a while, because I found it more aesthetically pleasing than my Gianni, I gave up on it because I simply couldn't find clothing for it - but I have since tweaked my Gianni to a point where it doesn't actually look like a gladiator. It's still muscular, yes, but I got the arms down so that they no longer look like they're hewn out of redwood trees.

Depending on what kind of body build you want, and what type of apparel you're looking for, Gianni or Jake are probably going to be your best options. I haven't seen whether TMP Legacy's male body got much support yet (but whether it does or not, there are several threads totaling hundreds of angry posts about Legacy being an unfinished mess).

  10.    It is dark and cold. But not quite cold enough. So, pretty decent, in terms of the season. I'm also not sick for the first time in several weeks, which is nice. But I also don't really have anything that excites or exhilarates me at the moment, so .. As we say in Swedish; 'Det rullar på' (it goes/rolls on/forwards).

We also used to have a little list to reflect on at the start of the day at my old workplace, that we called 'DAG' ( = 'DAY').

    • Vad mår Du idag? ('How are you today?')
    • Har Du några angelägenheter idag? ('Do you have any affairs today?' - referring to off-schedule tasks, such as 'Today I'm going to the dentist after lunch' or 'I need to make a phone call to the tax agency during their open hours')
    • Vad skall Du göra idag? ('What shall you do today?')

I quite liked it. Also the fact that it was preceded by one minute of silence - meaning we were paid to sit down and be quiet for roughly 4 hours annually.

    IM to creator?

I could. But if the demo doesn't actually 'demonstrate' the product, i.e. what a bloody demo is supposed to do, I'll just regard it as 'not having a demo, default to shopping rule #1': "No demo, no purchase".

Found myself a new shirt. One where the collar wasn't either crazy spiky or weirdly rigged to follow my chin's movements. And it came tucked. Men who don't tuck their shirts shouldn't be trusted. It also came with a tie version, but it's Thursday so that felt a bit too dressed up.

Raw shot, slightly cropped since I shot it in my AO, and the lighting setup is just how I've lit my home.

Because reviews on items marked as a demo really shouldn't be there, even if only to prevent abuse and that is a feature request I'd submit.

What if I want to complain about the demo not containing any actual textures apart from a blank white sheet with 'demo' spammed all over it in red text, making it pretty much impossible to determine whether the textures on the real product are decent?
