I have seen this phenomenon several times on the last two FS releases and wiser heads than mine point to various connection inadequacies, none of which stand up to close scrutiny. [...]

It shouldn't happen with stuff that already has been cached (in the hard drive) but it does. It happens most times after a TP but I've had it happening while walking around a sim and returning to the area where I had seen a building that is then apparently gone (it's there after I re-log).

Ok firstly, apologies if this isn't in the right section, but this issue is odd and I am not sure if it's viewer related or a server issue.  The issue itself seems to coincide with the weekly rolling restarts which suggest to me that it's server related.

So, I seem to have a LOD issue relating to certain mesh parts on some vehicles I use in SL.  I use Firestorm viewer and my LOD is set to 3.0.  This setting is high enough to allow we to see all the various switches and knobs in the cockpit of the helicopters i fly.

However, after last weeks rolling re-starts, the next time I logged in, all those switches and knobs no longer looked correct with that LOD setting.  They all look deformed, the way you often see some mesh when you turn the LOD setting right down.  In order to see these switches properly, I have to turn the LOD of the viewer all the way up to 4.5, which I think is excessive.

Now, this is not the first time I've had this issue.  Several months ago, right after a round of Tuesday restarts, the exact same issue occurred.  I could not resolve it then, but it suddenly fixed itself after 3 weeks later, coincidently right after another round of rolling restarts.

So it seems to me initially, that the restarts are causing this issue in some way, therefore server related?

    Adding the following:

It is not a single region issue, as it doesn't matter where in SL I am flying, this LOD issue persists.

I don't know if it's viewer related, however, prior to typing this, I did test it with both the default LL viewer, and Catznip viewer.  With the default LL viewer, the LOD seemed fine, though I couldn't see in preferences where you set an actual value, it only had a slider - but regardless, setting the slider to Med and even Low, there was no LOD issues.  On the Catznip viewer, the issue was identical to Firestorm - in actual fact it was worse, because even at LOD value 5.0, the switches still looked deformed.

Any idea what could be causing this?

The conclusion is obvious to me: it's a TPV issue, as it doesn't happen with the official viewer.
I must say that the latest Firestorm has been giving me quite some grief concerning rezzing stuff. Sometimes, entire builds disappear and I can only see them again after re-logging.

[EDIT] In the official viewer, you can change the LOD settings via debug.

    Second Life Server and Events

We will be deploying version 2022-09-09.574921 to the SLS + Events channels on Tuesday, 2022-09-20 from 06:30 - 11:30 PDT.

    Second Life RC

The Release Candidate channels will be restarted on Wednesday, 2022-09-21. There will be no version change from the current version 2022-09-09.574921.

    Coming Soon*…

Another maintenance release with several crash fixes is likely our next candidate for promotion, although it may be a couple of weeks before it’s ready

    • As always, Coming Soon represents our best guess at what will be moved from Aditi to RC in the coming weeks. We may need to delay, reshuffle, or remove upcoming releases for operational reasons.

Are you sure the SLS is getting an update? the GSP shows restarts as being completed.

Nuggy, an SLS region hasn't been restarted. It's now 6:40 SLT.

I hate having to throw out a thread for this issue here but I am beginning to go nuts. I tried so many things by now, I don't know what else to try to solve the following issue:

    image.thumb.png.0ef0ade41b0032036166e61d5e9a0454.png

No clue where this is coming from. My PC runs 24/7. Went to bed this morning after a long night on SL, closed the viewer, woke up 4hrs ago, turned on my monitor, fired Fierstorm up and: Baaaam! IN your face!

I honestly tried everything I could think of, including (but not limited to) checking my router, reconnecting internet, disabling windows firewalls, trying to log in on SL services through their website (works), trying multiple viewers, sims, accounts and what not. Amazon Servers show stable, LL servers / status shows all green, my internet works like a charm - I DO NOT KNOW WHAT THE F* THIS IS!

Please help me save my sanity! 🥴🤓

That happens to me sometimes, early in my morning (late SLT). The issue disappears after a while.

It may be related to some temporary cloud unavailability but of course I'm just speculating.

Probably because there would be too many tickets to manage.

I have to agree it might be a good reason but the Lindens may be out of luck on that.

Servers generally get less stable the longer they are running. Most servers and the software they run are rarely completely water-tight and due to human error by programmers or hardware error can have memory leaks and other issues such as corruption that accumulate and degrade service.

Restarting servers on a schedule is pretty standard stuff, it is a form of preventative maintenance. It's always going to result in more up-time if the server restarts on a schedule than waiting until the person who runs the sim notices/cares to report it.. don't forget not all sims are being monitored by their owners constantly.

All true. But restarts are disruptive and should only happen when needed.

There's a debate to be had about how long between restarts though. Personally I reckon LL could get away with once a fortnight instead of once a week :)

Yes, the 10 days "rule" or so should be enough to keep the grid running without major issues. I'm excluding here event regions, as some even need to be restarted on a daily basis.

Anyway, what @Mazidox Linden explained may fall into the more or less "good reason" category. 🙂

    Second Life Server and Events

The Main Channels (SLS + Event regions) will be restarted on Tuesday, 2022-06-14, from 06:30 - 11:30 PDT, with no version change. [...]

Question: why restarting the Main Channel if regions stay on the same version, and if they are healthy? Any regions showing issues can be restarted, if those who encounter problems file a ticket requesting it. Those regions were restarted a week ago... Unless there is something you're not telling us. 😉

hi would it be possible to have mainland protected land servers auto reboot every 8 hours that would be 3 times a day for touring exploring driving sailing flying etc to fix the performance lag outs and crashes etc? it would be more helpful then these updates in my opinion on average

So, we wouldn't be able to do much around mainland because its sims would be restarting everyday, three times a day, right?

If lag is that bad for you, I suggest you check your viewer/connection settings, or even get a better computer.

  8. Is there a logical reason why a mesh building that was/is originally set to type Prim changes to type Convex Hull after a rolling restart? This has happened after rolling restarts — last week and today — to a building I recently re-rezzed on one of my sky platforms (at about 2000 m altitude).

I've had this building rezzed before but the issue (feature? :-P) only came up now. So, is it a bug? Or what is it that was changed in the simulator code and is causing it?

The building is in a Main Channel region.

Hello everyone! This week we'll be restarting Second Life Server and all RCs at their usual times of 6 AM Pacific on Tuesday and 7 AM Pacific on Wednesday respectively. We had hoped to get a new DRTSIM out but ran into an issue with the dataserver event firing when it should not under some circumstances.

Are the maintenance restarts for the Main Server Channel still going? According to the GSP, they are but... look at the time. And the GSP never gained much trust, at least from me.

However, my home sim (Nuggy) has been on the Main Channel for years, and hasn't been restarted yet. Is there some issue?

[EDIT] Never mind. (but Nuggy wasn't restarted)

    Completed

@Linden LabUnfortunately, it looks as though today's Roll to Main Server regions will promote the bug with names that has been widely experienced on RC channel regions referred to in this JIRA:

    https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/BUG-231680

The bug has been present on the Main Server Channel too, since its last maintenance. I've been experiencing it in Nuggy once in a while.

[EDIT] Or... maybe not. @Aishagain I jumped into that conclusion without giving it all much thought, really. Thinking about it better, maybe the bug wasn't affecting me in Nuggy, it was present in the regions where my contacts showing as (???) (???) were, instead.

I'm intrigued, after a lengthy downtime today Zephyr restarted and where it previously had a scripts run figure of 35% I'm now seeing 68-70%, and my train is running the smoothest I've seen in almost 2 years. Here's hoping it lasts.

Nuggy, my home sim, had over 90% Scripts Run for a few months, after some announced improvements. Then, suddenly, it dropped to around 60% average for the whole November till today before maintenance. Now it shows way over 90% average again. No builds have changed in the region nor the scripts amount, so this is good news. ☺️

    spoke to Live Chat:

I am sorry to hear that! We are seeing reports on this right now. We do apologize for the inconvenience. The service should be back up soon

The CSR also confirmed that there was nothing I or she could do other than wait for things to get back to normal

Thanks, I just logged in to Live Chat Support because of it, so I'm going to close the chat session. 😉

  13. The whole thing is tricky. Personally, I don't give a single bit about SomaFM just because they are not looking for a solution. Should SL users try to find one? Would SomaFM pay someone who has a viable solution?

I have a more serious question, though, supposing SomaFM gets money from SL parcel owners: is it fair that a parcel with very little traffic pays the same a club that is crowded most of the time does? If not, how do you control that? Traffic keeps changing, and it may change in a matter of minutes. Sorry, people, but the whole thing is nuts.
It's true that we pay LL the same for a low traffic parcel than we do for a crowded one but we always get something valuable in return — space to do whatever and prims.

[...] Oh and he said to me that I was the only one who had donated from SL who had contacted him.

    Makes ya fink, dunnit.

Might I suggest  that if you are even remotely serious that you email dj@somafm.com

    Weird indeed.

Now, why don't some of the SomaFM people join SL and come up with a solution? It's true that one may die from exposure but it's also true that no exposure may kill too — maybe even faster. So, they want/need money but all they seem willing to do is play music to a small audience.

There may be many ideas on how to pay them but is any of them realistic? Something that can be done without LL intervention? I think that even for LL would be difficult to implement a solution just for SomaFM. What about other radio stations?

@Coffee Pancake suggested something that might work, somehow...

Thank you for investigating this issue.

As of a few nights ago, i also noticed the stream on our parcel vanishing. It is a great shame, since i haven't been able to find another stream with ambient sounding music as fitting as one of Somas stations, for our sci-fi themed build. [...]

Right. The opposite is also valid — you were providing a visual environment (that you pay for) for that channel. Should SomaFM pay you for that? Of course not, it's an exchange.
Try Ocean Radio Chilled. PM me in-world and I'll send you the URL, if you can't find it.

(I think this thread should be moved to some other forum)
