it doesn't matter much, if there isn't a direct export to dae (collada). for static objects, you can use the fbx converter tool, to convert an fbx to collada (so you can import it into SL, which requires collada files). (there is a collada plugin too.. if it's not supported out of the box.. colladamaya)

Define easy to afford? You have to pay tier to Linden Lab each month, a 295USD (excl. v.a.t. if applicable) for a full region. Then there is a 100 USD transfer fee that has to be payed and the remaining tier days the seller wants back. (and some want a tiny bit of profit along the way too). So selling prices, vary between 100 usd (very minimum) and 400 (depending on the tier days left). In some cases its even more, because it contains tenants you get along the sale. Or if the region is Grandfathered (meaning having old tier price), but then the transfer fee is 600USD instead of 100USD. with 4r7 release of Zbrush, the zremesher (auto retopology tool, aka high to low poly process) is very good.. (you can draw curves to follow, and density areas that need to be followed during retopo). Also Uw mapping (via uv master plugin) is now rather good. Same for the baking process (normals, specular, diffuse, ao) No need for a traditional modeler for those (although you are ofcourse free to use those for these steps, if you need so) For animation, rigging (non static mesh) though.. it is still needed. (no good way/support in zbrush)

1) yes, you can create infinite regions using opensim (in grid mode). Although how many you can use on one machine depends on the machine, the use of scripts, the use of concurrent av's etc... 2) Yes, better use a dedicated machine for that (e.g. dedidacted server(s), or powerful vps(es)) Bottom line is, it must run 24/7 on the internet, (be sure to config the firewall correctly), so others can use it (either through hypergrid, or through local accounts. 3) yes, the default terrain is there, just as the sky and sea. 4)No you cannot do this, they are two different grids, with their own technology etc. You can however connect to other grids using opensim through hypergrid setup. (if you are allowed to connect to that grid where you want to go to from your grid ofcourse) Note: hypergrid is still under highly development, and can result in loss of assets or other weirdness, use with caution. 5) see 4. (you can ofcourse upload your own created assets, in terms of textures, scripts and the original meshes, to your own grid, from your harddrives. )

indeed the survey is unclear in many questions asked. There doesn't seem to be a certain background/goal to the questions (direction, whay is the survey trying to find out?) just random questions (direction wise). Also the answers you can choose from are in many cases too limited.

When normal map support kicks in (finally), most mesh objects can be lowered in tri counts (since you can bake the high details as normal map and apply it to the low tri mesh. Inworld this low tri mesh looks like a high detailed one, without the lag tax.). I'm impatiently awaiting the support of normal maps. (a wonderful world is near)

Problem do rise now and then, and they don't have to be related to a newer server version per se. Keep that in mind. Many of the rolls are without any problem, in my (and my clients) experiences.

Did you try different regions, that normally would have voice? If the rest is working, but one is not, it might be that that region needs to be restarted because the voice channels are all used up. Each time a parcel has been subdivided, or parcels being joined, new voice channels are created on the voice server, without deleting the former ones. if there is enough subidiving or joining going on, those available channels can be run out. (that's what a linden told me once) If every region has no sound for you, than most likely it's a local issue on your part.
