Is there a way to disable the "my.secondlife.com" Facebook style profiles?

Tho yes I see the point about the feeds and what have you but the fact is that if someone wants to know what groups your in or your picks, etc... they should download a viewer and check your profile in world or ask you not stumble upon you by typing something into google.

No, you can't disable it completely. Go to your profile at my.secondlife.com, click Settings and then Privacy. Set the level(s) of privacy that you want.

If you remove all interests from your web profile, the system will not be able to suggest you to other people with similar interests.  Also, they have recently changed the privacy setting options, so it is now possible to make your own feed so restrictive that nobody can post comments on your profile.  There are still other things that they need to do, but by taking those two steps you can go a long way towards effectively disabling the system.

Your name is going to come up in a Google search regardless of my.secondlife.com or not. Just thought you should know.

You can set the Feed to "Nobody" which does effectively disable it & at least removes it from the front page of your profile
