How  do I change my name using

 the dashboard

i want to change my avatar name. how would i do so

You cannot ever change your real name (your SL username).  That is permanent, like your RL Social Security number.  If you want to use a nickname that many people will be able to see in world, give yourself a Display Name.  To set your display name:

1. Log into Second Life.
2. Select Me > My Profile.
3. Click the Edit Profile button.
4. Click Set Your Display Name to the right of Display Name.
5. Enter your display name under New Display Name.
6. Enter your display name again under Type your new name again to confirm.
7. Click Save.

You cannot change a Display Name from your Dashboard, but you can do it by going to http://my.secondlife.com/<your user name here>  and clicking on Edit Profile. (If you have a first name and a last name, be sure to put a dot between them.)

As addition Rolig's perfect answer: What you change is a display name. It is not guaranteed that other people will either see that or use it but call you by your real name that is hazan01.
