Missing object rotation bands in edit mode

Hi,

My partner has accidentally clicked a key combination whilst editing an object and is now missing the RGB colored rotational bands/ compass in edit mode. Holding CTRL whilst in edit mode does not work either. The grey sphere is also missing.

Any ideas how he can bring it back?

Maybe they have "Select Face" checked in the Edit menu? If so, just click the Move radio button instead.

I wasn't able to find anything else that made the rotation handles disappear. That doesn't mean that something else isn't there.

If the object is "Locked", (checkbox in Edit->Object) you don't get the editing handles and bands, because you can't move the object.
