Without any clue as to your hard and software, and your chosen settings, no one could offer any useful help. By system specs I mean Operating system specs and the info on the Help >about>...whichever viewer you use, so cpu, gpu/driver, RAM etc, edit out anything you think is sensitive. Aisha's advice is the best starting point for others to offer suggestion, but I would also recommend you check if the anti-virus program you use is scanning the cache folders and chatlog folders too aggressively, also the SL executable. This will give symptoms of short-duration freezes. If you are experiencing longer periods of freezing then you might consider putting some software on to monitor the temperatures of your CPU and Graphics card to check for excessive heating.
