Can't get in to this stupid place just keep getting sent to apply for membership, done that already about 20 times so far

Welcome to Second Life, Nosathro.

Have you downloaded the Second Life viewer yet? You won't be able to "get in to this stupid place" without doing so.

Scroll down to the bottom of this screen, read along the menu, under "Second Life" sixth option on the list is Download. Click on that, and follow the instructions. And then once you have downloaded the viewer and log in for the very first time, have patience and wait for the terms and conditions to load, tick those, and then have a little more patience and go through the original orientation process thoroughly. This is really important.

And then the world is, as they say, your oyster (or do they say lobster these days?)

Is there a specific person to contact?  Is there a membership fee?  If they do send you a Join Group message, often times you need to be online when it's sent or it gets lost.

Are you talking about trying to get in to Second Life itself (if so, see Marigold's comments), or are you already in Second Life, and trying to get into a specific group (if so, see Rowan's comment).  Note that the term "online" here doesn't mean "on the internet", but rather in-world -- able to login to a Second Life viewer to access this virtual world.  Also, please understand that unless someone's got the last name "Linden", they're just a Second Life user like yourself, not an employee of Linden Labs.  At some point you may need to contact Support.

User name exists. User age is 11 years 5 months. User profile says they are returning after an absence. So this isn't someone's first day.

Did they perhaps try to log in during the downtime earlier today?

They acted like a new person, and frankly after a break of several years, I felt like a new person too. We can only advise, and if they choose to just SHOUT AT EVERYONE and be negative about Second Life, then I am afraid to say, it may be down to a problem that none of us are qualified to deal with.
