Any good script would have to be custom designed for your application. There are general principles,  of course,  but the script will need to know which textures to use,  what faces to apply them on,  and what other options you may need. Unless you are happy with a random free script,  your best bet is to post in the InWorld Employment forum to attract someone to write a script chit your needs. Especially if you plan to put your product on the market.

As much as I agree with this, you can say the exact same thing about sit scripts: they need to know what animations to play, how to orient the sitters, when to give props, etc. etc. But the SL community has (to my eyes) decided on one or two standard scripts that while certainly not efficient or really suitable for simple use-cases, have a wide userbase of support and can be configured to work by most people via notecard with perhaps a little bit of coaching.

When someone asks "how do I get people to sit on my couch" we (generally) tell them to use AVsitter or the like, (even though it's bloated and innefficent) not hire a scripter to make a seat script for their specific couch. Even though many scripters could make a better sit script for a specific application.

The freebie one is fine. It might be a little complicated though if you're just starting out. You can go simpler still. One where everything is pretty much done for you would probably be better.

This one is very simple: https://marketplace.secondlife.com/p/Texture-changer-simple/14018252

You put your listener script in your clothing, make the appropriate changes, plug in your uuids and boom you have a working texture hud. If you're good with building you can retexture the hud prim and eventually when you're comfortable with some additional scripting you can add more boxes for more selections.

I'm really surprised there's no general consensus on texture HUDs like there is for say sitting scripts and AVsitter.

Omega, kind of?

The problem with "texture changers" vs AV Sitter is that one is inherently more complicated than the other as far as assumptions about the environment goes. As long as the build has enough links for sit targets, you can write a general set of scripts to handle 98% of use-cases. Changing textures though... that gets out of hand very fast. There are a lot of parameters per face, and there can be a lot of faces on an object.
