This section is for asksing questions about SL itself. Sorry bit we do not recommend or even give links to shops in world, it wouldn't be fair to the other shops that don't get a mention.

You can search Marketplace for them.  Also use inworld search for skins shops.  Some may have a free skin that you can get if you are under 30 days old or join their group.

Google Second Life Blogs, which many times will have leads on freebies.

You can also ask for recommendations in the regular forums.

Look in your inventory's Library >>> Clothing >>> Initial Outfits folder.  There is a selection of avatars, many of which do not say "mesh" after them.  The skins in them will work on any classical avatar, and they are definitely free.

You could also use your Search function to look for "freebies".

Visit the Adult Hub. You can use in-world search to find it. The area will have some free stuff for new users. Skins are part of some packages.

There are a number of regions that are devoted to providing free stuff to new users. You can find them by searching on free and, as suggested, freebies. And try free skin.

  • Look on the Marketplace for skins.  Use the search filter term "NOT Demo" to filter out demo skins.  (Or not.  Trying on demos is a great way to find a line of skins you really like, even if it means you'll eventually have to pay for them.)
  • Search in world on the term "Freebies"  There are many freebie stores.  One good one is The Free Dove.
  • Newcomer areas will also often have freebies.  Try "New Resident Island", they have a fairly complete free shopping area, including skins.
  • Visit some skin stores and join their store group.  Stores often have free gifts for their members, often a new one every month.
  • Join the group "Fabulously Free in SL" to get notices of new freebies.

A lot of free skins will look fairly poor, but if you search diligently you'll find some nice ones.  But skins are one of those things where the really good looking ones will cost you some fairly significant money.  When you're ready to move on from what you can do with freebies (quite a lot, actually), consider buying some $L with a credit card or PayPal account.
