Question

I made trading cards on second life and I am good with photoshop. But I am having a hard time trying to make a holographic type of card

I am trying to make certain parts of the card be shiny and or seem 3d like a holographic effect

I tried messing with different bump and specular textures and using video tutorials but none of them seem to work right. Most of the time the whole card is shiny with some slight bump detail. But I just want certain parts of the card to be reflective

Here's a very simple example:

Make a white on black texture, I did it in GIMP. Load that into the Shininess (Specular) slot of your object. I dialed up the glossiness to 100. You can also play around with colours and with the 4th (alpha) channel of your normal map (which I didn't do here).

Edit...

You could play around with a repeated pyramid normal map, no idea if that gives interesting effects...

Kwakkelde gave a clear answer that shows the limit of what we can do.

You may be able to make a mesh surface to hold what would look more 3D and holo like. I am thinking may be 3 retangular surfaces stacked close together, like playcards in a deck.

Each could have part of the holo image so that paralax would reveal a 3D effect.
