Hi Nanata,

An easy way to start is to go to the top of your dashboard page, go into 'shopping', then 'marketplace'. From there you can search for individual items like hair, skin or clothing or search for a complete new avatar. You can spend 0 Linden all the way up to thousands. One piece of advice--if you find something that costs a fair amount of Lindens, like skin or hair, make note of the creator and visit their shop in world. That way you can try on demo skins and hair to find the best look for you.

There are so many options in so many price ranges!  You can spend very little if you know where to shop (or join some hunts).  Skin is likey to be the most expensive purchase

check out these blogs for free options and ideas:  http://fabfree.wordpress.com/  or  http://slfreestyle.blogspot.com/

or if you want to spend more money take a look at the fashion feed for sources and places to go:  http://www.fashionfeedofsl.com/

Good Luck!

I find that if I want to get a decent hair, skin, suit, etc. I can't do it for under $2000.

However, starting out, you can find a LOT of freebies on the SL Marketplace and inworld at places like the Shelter, the Dovet, etc. and various infohubs, so you should first do your best with that before you spend a lot of money.

You can actually change a lot by editing your shape. And that is not going to cost you anything. Just rightclick yourself and select Edit Shape (?) and start changing the sliders. (But make a copy first in case you end up with something you are not happy with.) You can pay a lot for a shape if you want, but all shapes start with someone editing the sliders...

Also, you can save some lindens by doing hunts.
