You have to pay for your maximum tier level per any month that you hold it even if it would just be for 5 minutes... A way to somewhat avoid this would be creating a group and donating your land to group which gives you a slight tier bonus... This may not put you up to the limit you need it to be.... However simply subdividing and abondaning the overage will not make you pay less for the month you hold it. You would owe the tier overage for that month you hold it and then need to tier down before the next month to not be charge the same amount again

based on what you said, i would ask your landlord/lady if they could create a smaller parcel. if they say no simply move on

you can find the latest land sales located at Search>Land Sales and from what i have been learning dont just run in and buy! Its always best to look around before you purchase!

Best of luck and have a lovely day!

The poster who mentioned Group-owned land is on the right track, but you may need to take it a bit further if the additional land won't all fit under the tier limit even with the Group bonus.  In that case, you need to "borrow" some tier from the group.

To do that, deed the land you already own to the group, then go to the group's Land & L$s tab and reduce your contribution below the amount needed to support the land owned by the group.  It will put a scary warning that group members must contribute more tier.  Ignore that warning.

Now the group owns your old land, but you have the tier free to buy the new land.  (Note that you cannot "buy for group" using the same group from which you're borrowing tier--it won't let you add land to a group that doesn't have enough contributed tier.)

After you buy the new land, divide it up, sell off or abandon the part you don't want, you can then go back and "make whole" the group's tier contribution.

It may seem scary to ignore the warning, and indeed there must be some limit on how long the group can have too little tier contributed without the land being in jeopardy.  But it seems to be a very long time: One notorious adfarmer/sex club/casino group went for more than six months with more than 80% of its land uncovered by tier--and that was despite Linden land execs and Governance having been notified of the overage.  So evidently there's no real rush.

Qie there's absolutely no reason to even mention how long you can leave your group without the right amount of tier, especially giving the impression there is no rush. This could quite possibly lead to future land losses for owners and be directly as a result of what you say here.

Shorahmin, the post by Lina has the right of it, group bonus may help. However if you choose to use Qie's more complicated method, please do not rely on some unknown timeframe for leaving the group without enough land credits, get it back to normal as soon as possible.

There is another alternative. People let you 'rent' tier from them. I'm sure if you do a search of "rent tier" or "hire tier" you will find such a service.

Even one second of usage of land tier over your current level will make you bump up to the next level. That's why you can't make an overage purchase even temporarily, with the intent of fixing it -- the Lindens will not help you on this (you can petition and beg, and sometimes on a first-time newbie mistake, they will fix it as a courtesy one-off offer, but it is not their default.)

There is absolutely no reason why you cannot undertier your group temporarily to make the purchase, then purchase it, and then deed it to the group  -- if you've done the math.

The reality is that there is a window of about 24 hours before you will get messages from LL about needing to add tier to your group. Indeed LL does seize land (the latest land to be added to the group) if you are undertiered. But it is a process where you get a warning first, and there is a window. It is not worth risking more than a few minutes, in my view, but I've seen it go to a day or more when I've accidently had a group under tier.

There is no stated rule about this anywhere, it is a discretionary and manual process. But you shouldn't be forced into upping your tier level, or renting tier at much higher prices, merely for a transaction like this IF you have determined that you can add the tier in through the group bonus or other residents helping you.

BTW, you can "buy for group" to instantly make use of the group bonus -- again, if the math is working out.
