Question

We are running SL behind a significant set of firewalls/filters at the NYDOE.  Over the years of this program we have worked out how to get SL and SL voice to work in our environment by opening ports etc on firewall and filters.  And everything is still working fine except now SSB is showing our avatars as grey.  Can you tell us what additional ports/ip addresses etc need to be open for SSB to work/

We are running the most current version of Firestorm, did a clean install, and followed all other instructions to install correctly for SSB.  Computers in use are primarily Macintosh, various versions.

It is definitely a network issue as we have tested the same machine/install through a different network and had no problems.

Hi Leslie,

You may have seen this already, but I'll link it anyway. Here's the LL Knowledge Base page for driving SL through firewalls...

I didn't see a specific reference to SSA (it's now called Server Side Appearance) on that page.

Why do you believe it's a firewall issue? Have you taken a machine outside the firewall and found that it works?

It may have nothing to do with SSA (Server Side Appearance).  Some people are having trouble with the increased reliance on HTTP texture rendering in the newest generation of SL viewers. Fetching textures by HTTP instead of UDP packets generally increases rendering speed and reliability for most people, but it has the opposite effect for some, especially those on wireless connections. Take a look at http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/http_fetching_issues  for suggestions about dealing with the problem.

Even if that's not the immediate problem, it could be that your IT staff are using proxy settings that are more appropriate for handling UDP traffic than HTTP traffic.  Refer them to http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Using-Second-Life-with-a-firewall/ta-p/1304539 for guidelines.

Hi All,

i work with Leslie and have been troubleshooting for a few days. We have gotten SSB to work using the firestorm internal proxy setting (HTTP ONLY- if we attempt to use SOCKS, then the program crashes and needs to be re-installed) however, although everything renders quicker and looks normal, WE LOSE VOICE. The program continues to recognize voice levels in prefs, but voice chat is greyed out.

So basically, we can have grey avatars with voice (using just proxy settings in system prefs) or normal looking avatars with no voice (using proxy settings both in system prefs and firestorm HTTP)

Any ideas??

I assume you are aware that voice is not a part of the Sl viewer itself. It is handled by a third party, Virwox, so you have to be sure that SLVoice.exe, which manages that function, has access through your firewall.

BTW, as a truly minor point, you are not dealing with SSB. It's Server Side Appearance (SSA). SSB does not exist.
