TGA File help

I bought a few tga templates and  I was wondering is there a way to get it to open in seperate layers in gimp and simply change the color and keep the wrinkles and shading on it ?

Nope.  A TGA file is not layered.  If you download it to GIMP or Photoshop, you'll see that it's all one layer.  Sometimes if you are very lucky and the elements you are interested in don't overlap much, you can tweak them out and copy them to new layers.  That's a real nuisance, though, and it rarely works.  It's more fun to make your own work anyway.

typically if you us the color to alpha and make the white into alpha it keeps the wrinkles and lines. at least that is what i do.
