Do you sometimes wake up at 4 or 5 in the morning anguished, short of breath and full of panic about the day to come? How do you cope? Is Second Life of any help? Or do you swallow some kind of Xanax to get back to sleep and find peace? Am I the only one to be scared? Plus, why are we (me) frightened? I can see the night turning to a pale rainy dawn and I wonder... Am I turning insane or do some of you feel the same?

I was actually diagnosed by a medical specialist as having "Morning Terrors."  My mother experiences them as well.  To begin with, I'm a "night person" so not sure if that plays into it at all.  Right now (almost midnight EST), I'm feeling good, positive about life, etc.  But come 8 am, I feel why is it even worth getting up.

Because my situation was so severe (ie. was often not able to get to work), I was put on anti-anxiety meds.  I still don't feel great in the mornings, but prior to the meds, my body would be physically shaking in the morning and I felt like I'd just heard the worst news possible.  My mind could rationally "know" this was some wierdo emotion and I would feel better as the day went on, but my body didn't want to co-operate.

I can pretty much assure you that you are not insane. :)  Morning terrors is a recognized condition that apparently many people experience at some point in their lives.  (I thought it was "just me" when I first told my Dr. and was amazed it had a name.)

As far as SL being of any help...hmmmm, good question.  In and of itself I would say no, but particular people and activities are most helpful.  The virtual translation of the same type of people/activities that are helpful in RL, just often more readily accessible in SL.

Hope that helps a bit.  Please feel free to IM me here or in world if you want to talk. :)

Try to view each day as a fresh start to things.

The only time I tend to anguish the new day is if I have some crap schedule for work that day.

SL does help take my mind off the daily grind though. I might ponder ideas about a new house to build or whatever stuff i am doing in SL.

I know many dread life but here is the thing -

On my way to work, I pass a homeless shelter, I see this guy who has set up his home under a bridge, I pass one of our county jails, and i realize that at night, I have a bed to sleep in, a roof over my head, a car to drive, and even a computer to do things like SL.

Sometimes you just have to count your blessings.

Sometimes it seems like the end is coming but one always gets by somehow. Often you come up on things and think, "there is no way I can make it thru this!" but then one day it is just a bad memory and you realize you made it thru somehow.

when i wake up and it's still dark out and soon to start becoming daytime..i feel like i have a jump on the day..

it's when i wake up and daylight is already here that i feel i have missed out on some time..then i start feeling like i am behind schedule..even though i may not be doing anything that day at all..

is that crazy or what?

i think thats why i like working nights..

because i see the day starting up.......every day Oo hehehe

I solve the problem by going to sleep about the same time the sun comes up.

I like that idea!  My mother aforementioned is very nocturnal.  Since she had to abide by "regular hours" when she worked, now retired she is listening to her internal time clock.  She goes to bed around 8-9 am and gets up around 5-7 pm.  (Regardless what time she wakes up, she still experiences the "morning terrors" - sometimes to lesser or greater degrees.)

The ideas other posters have listed are great...I practice gratitude daily.  However, when a medical condition, in the case of morning terrors, brain chemicals are out of whack, is present...it often takes some intervention.
