"I’ve been active in the virtual world of Second Life for over 14 years now, and one of the things I have learned (which also applies to the newer crop of social VR apps and the suddenly-ubiquitous NFT metaverse platforms) is the following lesson: people are willing to invest a significant amount of time, energy, and money in their avatars!

But what I do find extremely interesting about Second Life (which has a userbase which skews significantly older than, say, VRChat or Rec Room) is that people almost uniformly confirm to looking as young as possible! In my peregrinations and perambulations across the grid, I can often go for weeks at a time before I see another avatar who appears middle-aged, or (God forbid!) a senior citizen. SL is full of clubs and nightspots where everybody seems to be young, pert, taut, and beautiful (even the men!). Why is that? Why does nobody question the status quo?"

"One of the ways in which I keep my finger on the pulse of Second Life is to head to YouTube, do a search for “second life”, then sort the results in reverse chronological order by the time they were uploaded (i.e. most recent videos first). Steven was driving home from a friends house in the early hours of Sunday morning. He was alone in his car, and there were no other vehicles on the dark winding country road he was driving on, in the east of England. Somehow, Steven’s car left the road and hit a tree. "Yesterday morning was very odd. You see, a few weeks ago a friend of mine was killed in a car accident, and the funeral was yesterday. Now, because of the new lockdown measures in England, I was unable to travel to the funeral. I was actually quite upset that I couldn’t go, but I knew I wasn’t the only one. "Inspired by the Roman Strategy Table from Del-ka Aedilis, I created this scene of a Roman noblewoman seeing the plans laid out by her husband and then praying to their ancestors, perhaps on the eve before he goes into battle. All the decor pieces as well as the house itself are from Del-ka Aedilis Civitas series, which does a wonderful job of capturing various aspects of Roman life.
