Question

Is there no memorial site to the Lindens who are no longer with us who helped build this world for us? Major workers or behind the scene ones, there should be someplace we can give our thanks to them.

I was thinking of a memorial type site, for the Lindens who have been there for all of us and sadly no longer can be, like the 911 site, or war site. They gave us this world and the tools in it, they should be remembered too.

That's a lovely thought.  I'm sure it's appreciated.  Linden Lab is a big company, and employees come and go.  A surprising number of the old hands are still here, but more have left over the years.  If you're around here long enough, maybe you'll get to know a few of them and get a chance to thank them yourself.  They'd like that.

You should know, of course, that Lindens didn't create most of what you see.  There are certain parts, like Bay City, that were laid out by Lindens, and some of the oldest regions around the Da Boom sim were shaped by Lindens. Lindens created the mainland infrastructure -- its roads and waterways, and its landscapes. Of the over 25,000 sims in SL today, however, only a little over 7,000 are Linden-owned (the Mainland).  There are almost 19,000 private regions, and all building on those has been done by private residents.  Even on the Linden-owned sims, residents have done most of the work other than infrastructure that you see today.  You should also know that the Linden Department of Public Works -- the part of LL that builds and maintains things -- employs private contractors as well as Lindens to create things here.  Take a look at http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/LDPW

I didn't mention all of that to take away from what Linden Lab has done. In fact, the greatest contribution they have made was to give us the tools to shape this world ourselves.  It's what makes Second Life unique.  They used to have a slogan: "Your World -- Your Imagination". It's what attracted a lot of us old timers and keeps us here today.
