  1. Some of the most fun teenage me, about a whole lifetime ago, had on SL was creating the most obnoxious effects we could think of and using them, consensually, on each other. I wouldn't doubt that's where most these still get used... I can't actually even remember when I last got hit by a griefer who had more than particle spam to offer. It used to be more common, granted, but these days it isn't.

I mean, think about it. When's the last time you got orbited or the like?

  2. Purely from a physical standpoint, I grew up in the 90s, and during that era the beauty standard was "thin/hourglass" so that's kind of been (unfortunately) ingrained in my mind as the default even if it has gradually shifted towards "curvy/heavy" since then. And as such, Maitreya is what I wear.

Note, of course, that the mind is a lot more important, but that wasn't the question, was it? x3

It's so odd how some post like they are their avatars.

My avatar is literally just me manifesting in a virtual space. I mean, you'd not argue that we're not ourselves as we post here, would you, or that the voice you hear on the phone with someone isn't actually that person? It's a (selectively) filtered impression of a real person.

Now granted, there are exceptions as mentioned by the poster above me, but it's always a pet topic of mine so I just had to add my two cents.

Not being witchy here but I've never understood why this is a thing? There's alpha for feet, tiny script objects you can add in an Outfit folder that automatically changes your feet pose to match the shoes in the outfit, etc. I find it wildly inconvenient that feet aren't attached to a body. What is the need for detachable feet exactly, thanks!

Along with what Blaise said (and I kinda find that the Slink feet look better too + furry paws for those avatars), I personally also hate wearing unnecessary body parts. I'm not convinced they don't add lag, but it's perhaps a personal thing... anything I'm currently wearing should be visible or used.

But either way for Maitreya it's as simple as providing several versions of the body if they want to make everyone happy without making it moddable. One full body and one you wear with separate body/hands/legs.

In a recent FB post many people in the comments were saying they wouldn't buy the new bodies at only 20% off. The creator or a moderator for them said 20% off was generous enough. Ok, so it probably does look bad to complain that we want everything cheaper and more free stuff, but the fact remains that most people don't want to spend that much money on a "game" or virtual world and no amount of chastising us for saying so is going to change our minds.

It's not even me specifically wanting it to be cheaper, I want it to be successful so Maitreya and TMP have something to compete with and might even get forced into updating and improving their offerings more. How about detachable feet, Maitreya? Actually just make the whole body modifiable. As things are, that success will probably not come.

  6. I really did want this body to become popular but there seems to be a trifecta of reasons it's sputtering.

    1) Original price way too high. Should be in the Maitreya bracket to complete with those bodies. Legacy somehow managed to pull off the high price but that only means it's harder for others, and people really shouldn't look towards TMP for business advice anyway.

    2) Slow updates in the critical early period. Apparently there's something wrong with the auto-alpha scripts since launch, and that hasn't been fixed. Neither has the modifiable version manifested. Or a version that works with bento tails by rigging the ladyparts to some other bones.

    3) Due to the above two, support has been incredibly slow to manifest. Nobody has made basic wardrobe items for it (say, a tube dress? a short no-frills skirt? basic jeans? a tank top? a hoodie, a dress shirt, etc etc...) which in turn means fewer people buy in and the circle of life continues.

Should've done a 50% off sale, at least. Or heck, a 25% sale combined with lowering the base price by 25%... :P

  7. If the goal is purely making money I can unfortunately see the appeal that platform has. The models are so simple and quick to make compared to what's needed in SL (and there's no real rigging involved, not in the SL sense), and kids are usually eager to buy shiny things en masse.

I've seen them around but, like...what do they do? Are they dangerous? Copybotters? Or are they just processing traffic data or something?

It doesn't really matter, I ban them regardless since they don't pay me for whatever data they collect. There's no use worrying about copybots though, since anyone can do that on any account... if anything bots doing it randomly would be really inefficient since the creator doesn't actually know what they collect.

  9. Hello, lifers.

I'm once again tempted to ride a big horse around in SL, but since it's been a few years since, my previous one (from AKK) is obviously all outdated. So what's the new best pick? I've seen recommendations all over the place, from Teegle to Waterhorse to Realistek. Having one that is "joust legal" - if that's a thing - could be a fun bonus too, I remember jousts were pretty fun. What would you recommend, and why?

And on a sidenote; what happened to AKK Ranch? They used to be the big brand for horses, and now they're just gone without as much as a farewell message!

And you can link other mesh/prims to it, such as flowers, butterflies, whatever. Which is one reason mesh clothing creators dont want their creations MOD. They had a vision of their creation, they dont want someone messing with it. If you want to mod clothing, make your own or buy full perm kits.

I can't think of any possible way to make me want to buy a creator's clothing less than "~my vision~"

There were other examples of "Creators Behaving Badly" too, but on a positive note, a few more who have overcome the "counterfeit" superstition hysteria and offer modifiable clothing:

    • Caboodle
    • FACS
    • Hotdog
    • lock&tuft
    • Malediction
    • Matova
    • Noche (fatpacks)
    • Semller (fatpacks)
    • Sintiklia
    • Thirst (fatpacks)

Some have been modifiable all along and some recently came over to the good side so may have back-catalog items that lack Mod perms, so as always check to be sure. Also I'm not sure I've flagged all the fatpack-only cases, or even which creators offer non-fatpack products at all.

To add to that list just to give creators who leave the mod-box checked some much-needed love:

    • Kaithleen's
    • Neve
    • Meva
    • Justice (fatpacks)
    • Asteroidbox (fatpacks, I think)

I had always thought the average SL members were gorgeous 20 somethings riding the razor edge of technology like "Ready Player One" and that I'd have trouble fitting in at the ripening age of 54 and my tales of "When i was your age i had to put the phone handset on a box and make a call to get internet at a blazing 56 kbps. If i so much as farted vigorously I'd lose my connection!"

    We were.

  13. I'm 35, so basically 3/7ths in the grave already. I spend most of my day shopping for headstones, nice and picturesque burial plots, and smearing my face with serums to try to cling on to some semblance of youth.

Jokes aside what always amused me was how you really can't tell someone's age on SL... most of the time. Without the limitations of the physical body getting in the way, it seems to me like most people retain a kind of youthful enthusiasm and curiosity.

  14. Yep. I use Discord for a variety of things, but I absolutely, pointedly, and far too stubbornly refuse to join any creator discords. I already have enough groups that I actually like participating in. If a creator only offers support in Discord it's the same to me as not offering support at all, which means they'd better not need to offer it to begin with. :P

They really seem to want to squeeze out every cent they can get. ☹️

Why not basic, basic+, bronze, bronze+ silver, silver+, gold, gold+, diamond, diamond+, platinum, FIC and unaffordable?
Starting at $9.95 and quadrupling in price every next step?

How about a log in fee, a log out fee, a teleport fee, a time online fee, a clothing changing fee, a hang around fee, a use an animation fee, a landmark fee, a forum post fee?

It hurts my very soul to defend a corporation, but what's wrong with giving people more choices?

If there is a subscription that includes a homestead by itself, what's the problem? If there is one that lets you roleplay with Soft Linden an hour every week, sure. It's not like they make things worse for the previous tiers, it's just more stuff.

Sure if they started raising fees for the lower tiers it'd be a problem, but they're not actually doing that, you just get more if you pay more... which is a lot like every business has to work in our current social system, and LL is on the more benevolent end of that since you also get plenty for free.

  16. Complexity doesn't seem to matter nearly as much as triangle count, but I do like imagining that it does at least something. If dressed I'm around 80k, and if naked 90k. Of that, about 13k is a very simple necklace I always wear, which is a big part of why I think complexity doesn't actually mean much. :P

But even with that - and all the other bits and pieces you need for optimal furriness, and WAY over-detailed but beautiful eyes - I never really exceed 100k or so. I'm actually not sure how it'd even be possible.

  17. I don't personally see why they'd get rid of SL at all. It's a pure profit machine for them, and kind of a status symbol since metaverses are becoming popular again, of which SL is the oldest and biggest. It might be time to start shaking in our boots if development stops, but they're pushing for all kinds of new technology for SL even as we speak so the interest is still there.

Tilia is separate from all that.

I don't think it can .. the technical tools to make good fluid real time motion captured avatar movements are only half the picture. The other half is social .. and LL do nothing from a social or cultural perspective.

Look at VRChat .. they demo stuff by having avatars directly poke and interact with other avatars. The presentation is explicitly socially focused .. come to VRChat, you can do this with others. That outlook motivates development and is present in everything they do. They are deliberately making a fun place to hang out and do stuff.

We're adding stuff functionally divorced from everything social .. here are some new tools. For .. um .. tool reasons.

I'm pretty thankful in that LL only remain as caretakers rather than the trendsetters of their virtual world. They give us tools, and we use the tools if we want to. They don't, like that other company, come in and go "actually you're not supposed to do adult stuff!" or "let's ban third party modifications", or "poke each other for fun just like this!". The last time that other company did they lost about 5000 concurrent users immediately and are still on a downward trend towards totally irrelevance, whereas SL remains steady.

Once SL has puppetteering and the dynamic animations that allows - I for one am super excited about it - it'll basically have feature parity with the competition again, and I wouldn't doubt a resurgence. :P
