  1. If you think it is bad now wait until they add 'groups' into it, as they plan  to soon.

Calling Rod Humble - have a look at Viewer 2 before Web Profiles and really tell us this is an improvement.  If you do I will believe you, based on your past experience and abilities.  The work I do on Viewer 2 tells me it isn't, not because web profiles is a bad idea - just that these web profiles are!

  2. Sadly the web profiles are poorly designed, poorly integrated and perform poorly.

But this is not because they are at initial stage - many months have been spent on them up to this point.  Yet we still have a profile layout that looks nothing like the rest of the viewer, has bits missing and is abominably slow on even average machines.

As you know Torley, I am supportive of many of the efforts on Viewer 2 - but not this one.  Oh, and the serious problem VWR-24426 (SSL handshake error) on web profiles still isn't fixed for many Mac users despite me raising it five weeks ago.

Anyone else finding Shakespeare's Pants a problem with this viewer? This is when pants (EN-US) or trousers (EN-UK) appear tight around the ankles like leggings instead of being the expected width at the hems.

Nope, that also happens in1.23.5... pegged pants have returned;-)

If this is the case could you please take a screenshot and add it and a comment to the JIRA.  The matter is scheduled to be discussed at the next (or is that first) meeting of the 'Viewer 2 Evolution User Group' next week.

  4. Ansariel,

Sadly the way the sidebar is coded makes it at the heart of Viewer 2.  Really I think it is better to find a workaround as the TPVs are doing rather than planning it's total replacement.

P.S. Am with you 100% on the web profiles - poorly thought out, poorly designed and poorly implemented.

  5. Much as I hate to agree with Cummere he is right about certain people in LL listening to their customers, mainly those that spend some time (often as alts) in-world themselves.  Sadly Snowstorm has lost one of it's greatest talents in the departure of Esbee - hopefully the void will be filled soon.

Oh, and btw Cummere which 4 active members of Snowstorm have commented on this thread - I can only count two (but i am happy to be corrected).

  6. How exactly - was that based on 'your feedback'.  This sounds like LL doing a few little things and hoping that we forget about the key element of still showing most of the profile information on the web and the imposing of facebook placing a cookie on our machine with it's 'Like' widget - things that have recieved much criticism here and elsewhere.

If you really want to allow people to opt out of social networking then provide an option to remove the social networking widgets from their profiles - it is technically easy enough to do so.

Usually I try and give some balance when LL is criticised - in this case it is hard to defend your actions.

I think that is the plan.  I can easily see new residents existing in a facebook like existence and using a web browser version of SL to only play dress up with items they purchase from a select few content creators.  I hope this isn't the case, but they do seem to be moving more and more to the 2d web from the 3D world.

The other VW, Blue Mars, is already going in a similar direction.  I don't think it is a bad idea - those same people would probably find live music, virtual pets and shopping in SL to be fun.

  8. There is a lot of truth in that Gavin. And the game the new CEO is most famously associated with - The Sims Online - made it accessible to a "wide, family oriented audience"

    Also a couple of others:

    • Bring in social gamers from Facebook and other places - as they spend the big money.
    • Provide some way of accessing SL through tablets and other mobile devices as that is clearly where a lot of potential users will be moving to.

Hitomi, I couldn't believe it myself, but:   http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=1717563

It seems to be exactly as Tali described.   True, it isn't technically your browser history.   Close enough, though!

Thanks for the link Casey.  It behaves exactly as I would expect it would - it will log every time you go to a web-page with a 'Facebook Connect' button on it.  Yes, these are becoming more commonplace but are still on only a very small fraction of pages on the web and are often related to news, blogs, shopping and gaming sites.

I just didn't want people getting the idea that there is something that will download your entire browser history back to Facebook as soon as you visit a profile page.

And even better, the instant you open someone's web based profile, the Facebook widget is sending your browser history to Facebook, even if you are not a Facebook member and have never visited their site.   All it takes is for you to have visited a site with Facebook Connect, which these days basically means, "you visited a web site."   Once your computer has a Facebook Connect or Facebook cookie in it, that innocent little "Like This" button whooshes up your browser history and all sorts of other data as soon as you start loading the page.

No it doesn't - it just lodges a cookie on your computer saying you visited that page.  That helps Facebook with targeted advertising (love it or hate it). It does not send your browser history to Facebook!

WOW (again) – I am truly amazed at so many people making so many comments and jirs’a, I honestly didn’t think any one used Viewer 2 except for the poor newbees that had it forced on them.

We all know from past experiences that the Lindens never read or take any notice of these complaints and will continue to steam roller through what ever they want.

I have raised several JIRAs - all have been resolved (except my current one on SSL handshake errors that is in the process of them fixing, hopefully).  One thing that sometimes happens is that they fail to close completed JIRA items.

From what I see right now, the populace is in rebellion stage, with a significant number of customers choosing exit strategy.

The majority never read the forums or the blogs and they accept (even with whinges) what LL throws at them - they come inworld to play, and they will until they get bored or SL folds.

And as for revealing my groups or picks -- yes, they are revealed, to anyone who any SL resident who bothers to sign in (on the web page).  They are revealed on the Web, and in Facebook, and who knows where else.

I'm not seeing 'groups' or 'picks' for myself or my testing alt in 'my.secondlife.com' when logged in - maybe I am not doing it right.

On a positive note my ad blocker was already blocking LL's advertisements.

  14. Don't worry - no one is going to make you log in to twitter or facebook, and you have no need to link your sl profile with any external app unless you really want to.

Mike's very reasonable concern is about the sudden revelation of the textual part (but not your groups or picks) of your second life profile to search engines.  LL really should have announced this before carrying it out.
