  1. I read on the other thread you posted that you've got a Radeon Xpress 200m.

I can't advise you on what graphics card you need to buy, but you certainly don't have to buy a whole new computer.

I run SL on a 3 year old Dell mid-range computer, which had a pitiful graphics card at first (because when I had it built and they asked me "will you be running high graphics games on it" I answered "no"!). My first few months in SL were horrendous because I kept crashing, frame rate was generally slow when I could log in, photo quality was very poor, and then someone on the forums recommended an nvidia 9500, so for around £50 I bought one, it was dead easy to instal, although I had to get someone else to upgrade my power supply for me, and it's run SL well for me for around 2 years now.

I'm sure other people who read this thread will be able to advise you what graphics card you need to upgrade to.

  2. People in real life lie, people in SL lie. People are people wherever you go. It's just a fact of life. Unfortunately. :smileysad:

Hopefully, the good and honest true friends you meet in SL will outweigh the devious, secretive, liars though :smileyhappy:

  3. The college of arts and technology in my home town have a sim in Second Life, but it is absolutely nothing like the town to look at, which isn't very disappointing (obviously I can walk out of the door, and catch a bus and be in my town if I want to see my town).

There are a couple of representations of Brighton, East Sussex, England in Second Life, and although not replicas, have captured part of the essence; the helter skelter on the pier, the Brighton-blue painted railings.  Its just enough to evoke happy memories of childhood visits to the seaside.

Regarding what Ishtara was saying, about how nice it would be to see places with perhaps changed gravity, it reminded me of a short film I saw recently, of what happens when a slight change is made to the physics engine. Everything and everyone on the sim were drifting slowly eastwards. I wish I'd been there, that must have been weird.

  4. Thank you for posting this, Rolig. I think - I hope - the ghosting/stuck presence issue is fixed (at least for now). I am redundant :-((

  5. I don't think you are ghosted - I think you just look like a white particle cloud - is that right?

If you are a white blob/particle cloud on your screen, you probably need to do a character test.

To do this, you need to click on "Advanced" at the top of your screen, click on "character", "character test", "test female/male".  This will put you back into "factory default setting".  Then you will have to look in your inventory for your usual shape, skin, hair, clothing, etc.  (It is useful to create a folder, into which you can place your favourite skin, shape, hair, clothing, HUDs - mine is called "Emergency Marigold", then if you need to do this again, you can simply drag the whole folder across to your avatar.

  6. I think it takes Wasted very little time, while giving him the personal satisfaction of knowing, yet again, he's been able to easily create a brand new alt, and outwit the system.  On Thursday, around 9am Spanish/European time, it took him less than 30 minutes to post to eight threads, which were left unattended for about 3 hours because there was no one moderating.

Also, I think he does it from his workplace, so he is multi-tasking in other windows, like I was doing when "monitoring" his activities this week.

He also gets the personal satisfaction of knowing that he has become "famous". Sad but true.

I hate shopping, but I do like Wetherby's, because its nicely set out, got loads of choices, including some for men, and is very fair on prices.

Oh, and I do a little cross-dressing on the side! Unfortunately Marigold isn't a unisex name - but here I am in all my male glory, having a leisurely Sunday in a robe that cost L$43, and soft snuggly slippers, which cost L$40 for two pairs (one male, one female, and they are transferable as is most of Wetherby's merchandise).

Very nice looking slippers.  I'm just not sure about the white socks.

    Still laughing :smileyvery-happy:

Okay this is a virtual world. But we are more than pixels. How much do you care about the appeance of the ones you cherish? Is it important to you? Please share.

I used to be with a man who would say "I don't like your hair" or "you need an face light", and I'd change my hair and wear a facelight, yet I only knew him to change his clothing three times in three years.  I would never have dreamt of saying to him, "you need hair" (which he did, but I dislike the "girlyness" of a lot of the hair available to men in SL), and I loved him regardless of how he looked. Most of the time he wore a mask over his face anyway, so I could imagine he looked like Brad Pitt underneath!

Honestly, though, it doesn't matter to me what someone looks like, as long as they have interesting personalities and are not insensitive and hyper-critical of me and my many flaws!

Just to contradict that slightly, I do have a MASSIVE crush on Wildcat's avatar currently - she is so photogenic, and somehow exudes enormous sexuality. But shhhhhh its just a crush, it will pass.

And my lovely partner, Janelle, of course is beautiful, in SL and outside of SL. But I would think as much of her if her avatar was a plywood box. Her personality shines through.

Assorted tee shirts range between 15L$ and L$35.

And I have to say that when I first ready your original post, I thought it was said with fun in mind.  It can be a challenge to find good quality men's clothing that isn't aimed at hoodies and urban- "yoofs".

There are some shops in the mall that surrounds Wetherby's main store, many of which stock some really lovely items of male clothing.  Open fronted shirts in assorted colours are around L$200 each.

I really hate shopping, and I know I haven't really met your challenge, but I think you can get kitted out on this sim for less than 1000L$ if you are male, and have an assortment of great outfits to suit if you're a classy guy over 30. And I like my men in (smart) jeans and tees (smart jeans are available in Wetherby's for less than L$40 also).

  10. 3000L$ for a 1024 doesn't sound half so bad :smileyhappy:

But I do think this is very crazy http://ld.auctions.secondlife.com/lin/auction/auction/view/id/3953/?SID=01c75d6a6ff547cb1defde4fe9f59d3a currently standing at 39,010L$ for a 1024, just because its on a Nautilus sim. Even if it were plated in (virtual) gold, it would only be virtual land, and not even a (virtual) sea view!

I'm all for paying into the economy, but sometimes there is a lot of "Emperor's New Clothing" going on.

  11. According to the Second Life Economy results, LL can well afford to provide more support.

    http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Featured-News/The-Second-Life-Economy-in-Q4-2010/ba-p/674618

The main reason for LL reducing its staff by a third last year was because the residents on the community forums provide an awful lot of the help/support.  We are not LL employees at the end of the day, and we shouldn't have to be concerned about the internal politics of Linden Labs.  "Residents" should only be concerned with getting the best possible experience with the fewest problems, and when they encounter problems, they need to be dealt with as swiftly and as efficiently as possible.

  12. It was good to speak to you over on the Aditi Beta test grid, johny.  Your girlfriend does not seem to be stuck there at all. And you say she can log in to the Beta test grid but not into the main (Agni) grid.

It would be very useful to know what message your girlfriend is getting on her screen when she tries to login.

There are also some Wiki links here for further information of why a login fails.

But we can rule out stuck presence/ghosting.

  13. There are a lot of tribute-type bands, if this is what you were meaning.  I'm in the group that promotes SL's Def Leppard, who hold regular events, and also give notification of other tribute bands.  Van Halen and suchlike. Click on my profile, look on groups list, if this interests you.  I'm not currently logged in, so cannot advise what to look for using the Search facility.

  14. I read through Amanda & Co's User Group transcripts for the past few weeks - and of course you attend those - and we are already seeing positive changes to these forums as a result of resident feedback, so it does look hopeful.

Edited: to add in the link to the Community Tools User Group, for those who haven't been aware there is a place to go to be heard by LL official employees.  http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Community_Tools_User_Group/31-Mar-2011

  15. /me strokes Willow's fevered brow and says "been there, done that".  (In real life terms 3000L$ is possibly a loss that can be weathered by losing out on a bottle of wine (I always equate my SL spending to what I would have alternatively bought in RL - my "thing" was always magazines and chocolate, and I rarely got around to reading all the magazines anyway.)

However, there is still time for you to be outbid.  And I wish you lots of luck.

  16. Support should be available for everyone, regardless of whether they are Premium or Basic. Good basic business sense is you have to speculate to accumulate, and today's NPIOF could be tomorrow's multiple sim owner/successful marketer, bringing a whole lot into the Linden economy.

You have made the valid point, that even though you don't hold a Premium account, you are not a "freeloader", and actually I have no doubt that you spend far more inworld than I ever have, and I've been a Premium account holder since around February 2008.

I know that you only have to look at these forums to see how many of the problems that a lot of residents have are repeated over and over again, and I can understand that LL are reluctant to pay to staff a Support office just for seemingly trivial problems that the community on the forums can deal with for them BUT there are also often people with NPIOF who run into an unusual problem, and they are just as likely to do so as a Premium level resident, and LL might be unwittingly disregarding an issue that could have an effect on the whole grid.

One of the things that has most frustrated me throughout my Second Life has been the inconsistency in advice and support, and the ridiculous "class system" that has ensued because of the Premium v Basic situation.

Darrius, thank you for starting this thread, and I hope it will be looked over by LL so they can realise how much Support needs to be available for all.

  17. Unless you have given private details to another person, it is unlikely your account has been used by another person.

You are showing as offline currently.

Sometimes the system is slow to update the information it shows inworld. Or the information is inaccurate.

If you think your account is being used by someone else, please inform LL via a Support ticket (click on "help" at the top of this screen).
