From what I have read, it seems that most are for better graphic content, not against it. im sure we would all like better graphics, problem is you need a good graphical PC and a good line. which in my experience isnt many people. everthings still grey, still rezzing, i cant see me, i cant see you, where am i, am i wearing clothes wheres my hair etc.
  2. a couple of years ago LL transmitted warnings via a blue box in the top right hand side of your screen if there were probs, do not rez no copy items it would say, refrain from L$ transactions until further messages, that kinda stuff. the problems are still there, but residents have to check on the blogs now ... you cant hide it forever LL, SL is a mess and everyone knows it.
  3. Kascha Matova wrote: Ugh! I need to learn to keep my big mouth shut. Just when I was praising the newest viewer for solving most of my texture loading and fps problems leading to a silky smooth experience the night before last, last night I get on and in no less than an hour of being in-world, my inventory never ever finished loading. I could not ever get my pants to rez, no matter how much I flew up, despite character testing three times, clearing cache, dancing back and forth between appearance mode and regular mode, etc. Never loaded. I even did the RenderUnloadedAvatar = true switch, which got rid of the cloud really fast, but then even though the rest of the world had fully rezzed, and so had my whole outfit, as soon as I went to change pants, the area went brown, gray, etc. and new pants never loaded. So essentially I may have been nude to some degree standing in various meadows for 2+ hours. Was anyone else having similar problems last night or is this just another personal tale of mine? :smileysad: SL was bad all weekend for me ,seems to be getting worse too. btw RenderUnloadedAvatar = true does exactly what it says. you may well have been naked, seminaked or ruthed to others.

TzunCet Xomotron wrote: If you read carefully, this is sounding more and more like an issue w/ SL's end of how they handle their server, not really anything against the Mesh Viewer or content creators. This is an advancement in technology, and a grand opportunity to enhance the quality of the Second Life user experience, I say we look to the future and embrace it =) Any idea that custom designed models will be more expensive to the server is unfair... Modelers can make very dense models, or very Low Resolution models, that's a choice of the individual, not a strike against Mesh View... All this talk of how prims are better, my first impression w/o evening knowing about SL was "wow, that's a pretty dense cube" =/ It'll be a blast.... A walkthrough of visual eyecandy. for 1% of the residents of SL yes, the rest will be long gone.
  5. Gaia Clary wrote: hmm. oops, i am a noob when i use v2, could be so ;-) Unfortunately i don't care if i am a noob or not. Fact is i use viewer-2 because it works best for me. But then that is my personal (noobish?) opinion. And maybe you are right. I should just start using moap and not care about my customers... hmm... A big moap noob i am of course what i meant was, you could set up moap for those 1000's of customers using V2 you could put on it V2 users only or something, im sure you could sort it out... although as i said earlier its very simple to create a false site using moap. take a screen shot of the sl log in screen overlay your transparent html, link, it to a php keylogger, hey presto! names and passwords! and straight through their firewall too! you think people will use it once they find that little gem out?
  6. Charolotte Caxton wrote: @ Dogboat: Comparing using V2 to eating crap is kinda offensive to me, but I get your point. My point was that if people come in to SL and only have V2 to use, they will not be stuck in their old outdated ways. I know there is a large vocal group of users that detest V2 mainly because it is not the old viewer and I understand peoples inherent resistance to change. It's human nature, thats ok. What needs to be discussed, as it is being done here, is that there is no need to fear change if that change is indeed beneficial. What we are attempting to do with this discussion, I believe, is alleviate fear by pointing out the benefits of new improvements. Media on a prim? That sounds interesting. Did a lot of people think that was gonna make SL a barren wasteland as well? no, most in the know thought it was a waste of time, actually it had something worse than many realised, a way to beat your firewall. btw i tried kirstens and LLs versions and yet im back to using phoenix. its not that i'm addicted to it, its just better, faster, has useful tools and is generally nicer in my opinion.
  7. Gaia Clary wrote: you love V2, thats like saying you love offal as you have never tried anything else. yep you have a fast computer, most dont. Moap is media on a prim which was supposed to be a fab new feature of V2 where you could play games in real time. in fact it was almost the selling point of V2. i have never seen one game in the wild. I think the top reason why Moap is not used is because Viewer-1 adicted hesitate to switch to Viewer-2. And since most shop owners are very carefull with their customers they refuse to use technology that can not be seen by all residents. I myself wished all so often to use moap and honestly i hope for meshes arriving soon so that viewer-2 becomes mandantory. Then i will immediately start using this awesome feature in my shop ;-) Now beat me if you like ;-) you could anyway :smileyvery-happy: is anyone still using V2 or is it just the noobs?
  8. DanielRavenNest Noe wrote: ortiga Waco wrote: well Charolotte you obviously fairly new to sl, anyone that has played secondlife for several years now will know linden labs hasn't upgraded their servers in years Now I know you are clueless. We are currently on "Class 7" servers for the newest ones, meaning they have had 7 different server versions. The newest ones run on Intel "Nehalem" processors, which have only been around a couple of years. Also, lately they have gone to http delivery of textures from the Amazon cloud, which takes that workload off the servers. What has changed is the number of scripts on an average simulator, and also on an average avatar, and the prim count worn by avatars has increased a lot. So gains in server speed have been eaten up by those increases. And on the original topic, 3D models are more efficient and easier to make than sculpts, so they should improve things. we are not on class 7 servers, most are still class 5. you my friend are the clueless one.
  9. Charolotte Caxton wrote: @ Dogboat: (realizes the irony of not being able to use the quote button from her cell phone) First, why wouldn't they add or improve upon their servers? Secondly, in order to experience a richer Second Life, why wouldn't someone invest in a better graphics card or whatever it is they need? Lastly, how do we know these things, such as the majority of people and the average user? ive been here 4 years i have a fair number of friends here, how often do you see, "omg lag?", "wait things arent rezzed" and i know LL only too well they dont want to pay good money for something that wont profit them. do you think meshes will attract more users? i dont. concurrency is down because of many LL goofs including V2. moap was a failure, moap games where? forced conversion to V2 will see an exodus of users, mark my words.
  10. Charolotte Caxton wrote: A technologically based virtual world demands and deserves upgrades. Otherwise I would be telegraphing this message to you. In real life. the problem is partly that LL will not add more servers and partly that the majority of users dont have up to date pcs or high bandwidth. SL will will become a desert as people find other SL like worlds where their technology is adequate. you are not telegraphing this message to me as the average pc user now has the internet and sufficicient technology to be able to read your message on a forum. they can use SL, watch videos, receive emails and photos, play WOW, have an account on bookface with an older pc. dont expect them to upgrade for something they dont need, they wont.
  11. arton Rotaru wrote Sure I also liked the fact that everything in SL was exclusive to SL. But lets face it, to keep SL attractive in the future, we have to make it look much more state of the art and not going on with it's more and more outdated look. There's nothing which is holding anybody back from learning mesh. It's not rocket sience or something like that. nope it isnt rocket science, but 99% of mesh creators will create over bloated models to suit their pcs. then you are seriously in trouble.
  12. Ashasekayi Ra wrote: LL can't unring the mesh bell now. Not only have they spent alot of time and money researching and developing it, there are many people expecting its release. But more importantly, mesh is more effiecient than sculpts on several levels. A sculpt always has a set amount of triangles even if the shape doesn't need it. With mesh, you can use just the amount of triangles needed. Plus, you have precision control over the LODs. You can texture a mesh properly without distortion as well as set different material zones as well. And as someone in this thread already stated, SL can't remain behind the times technologically if they want to continue being a viable player in virtual worlds. SL is a unique environment, its not behind the times. who is gonna beat SL at their own game? blue mars? :smileyvery-happy:.
  13. content creators? pfft. ive been here 4 years and watched as concurrency rates fall, mainly due to LL's stupidity. this could be the biggest yet.
  14. TzunCet Xomotron wrote: Mesh is the future. You're not holding on to your 8 tracks are you =P I do not think it will be half as bad as you think. I'm new here, but as a content creator I can assure you, we always have your best interests in mind, especially in the design and creation process. Creators have full control over the density and resolution of our products, and believe me when I say quality of products is by no means measured in polycount. The creative freedom to design w/o the restriction of prims is a godsend, and I really think you will enjoy the experience. The quality of Second Life "life" will increase exponentially... It's a simple fix really. All that needs be done is impose poly limits, not a problem... Merchants can also be -enforced- to advertise polycount on their products, the same way McDonalds needs to exhibit calories next to their Big Mac =D If I'm not mistaken, textures are 512x512 regardless, the only real issue is polycount. Impose restrictions for different types of products, Content Creators will be more than please to comply... Dense meshes don't mix in the "video game" scene, we already know that. It's actually a challenge to use less to get more. We look forward to the challenge... im a "content creator" (i hate that term by the way, its so pompous) also i also have friends who are not running state of the art computers, they are actually responsible for a lot of the cash in SL, the 40 plus husbands and wives etc who have disposable cash but not enough for a new top of the range PC, when the old one can do most things they want. SL should be very careful here that it doesn't become out of reach to the normal user or you can say goodbye to all of it.
  15. mesh will, imho, alienate a lot of users as meshes (corect me if im wrong) can only be viewed on V2 viewers which are demonstably slower than snowglobe based V1. phoenix is very popular as it allows people to use SL on older computers. not many people will buy a new PC just to use SL. i wont.

Ishtara Rothschild wrote: Dogboat Taurog wrote: do you mind? thats england's patron saint! it was said that the dragon was actually a crocodile and that george killed the crocodile by a river in a valiant fight thus saving the villagers when they came to get water. All legends are greatly exaggerated, if not completely made up. That's why it makes so little sense to revere them. It might as well be that ol'George became a local legend for standing up to his tyrannic wife back in the day :smileyvery-happy: But lets say it was just a boring old crocodile. Don't you think they should change the legend, the paintings, and all the stained glass windows to show a crododile instead of a winged fantasy creature? I mean, we wouldn't want anyone to lie about the real life identity of the crocodile, or deceive people about the extent of Mr. George's heroic endeavours PS: If I visit the local zoo and skewer a crocodile, can I be sainted too? i have a dragon myself. a bearded dragon, its a lizard from australia. of course its not a real dragon but he looks a little like one without the wings...

Isn't that on April 1? (Although, coming to think of it, what's more ridiculous about this fairy tale than all the other ones? Dragons are just as unbelievable as talking snakes and people who walk on water). do you mind? thats england's patron saint! it was said that the dragon was actually a crocodile and that george killed the crocodile by a river in a valiant fight thus saving the villagers when they came to get water.
  18. thats got a ring to it :smileyvery-happy: (unlike customer support... )
  19. how about " that virtual world that was a great idea until the company that owned it destroyed it by greed and lack of connection to its customers?"
  20. you do realise that to anyone without mesh viewers you will look extrememely odd? and it looks like a lot are not going to have sufficiently powerful computers to view meshes as it will entail using V2. i think meshes will be the death of SL.
  21. i went to help island today, not much to do so i thought id offer my limited assistance, i sat in a rocking chair, used my radar, found a 0 days newbie and started up a chat, she had quite a few questions. her first one was, "why are you sitting in a chair?" i said "you can do that in SL too" she said "no, you are in the chair, not on it" i said "oh that happens to me a lot, i look ok to me, its just SL" hmm she said. i taught her to open boxes and she redressed, then i tped her to a place for scuba diving for a bit of R&R, by the time she had arrived she was topless and bald, when i told her she said "wierd, i look ok to me" and ran behind some rocks when i showed her a snapshot i had taken. i never saw her again...
  22. Ishtara Rothschild wrote: WeeWillie Wylie wrote: and let us all remember the world didn't actually fall apart when they bought in voice...or made the adult continent...or did wind light and raised SL's minimum requirements...or when they messed up the open spaces and homesteads. SL did not fall apart all at once, but the concurrency started to slowly decline shortly after the maturity rating changes, and has overall been declining ever since. Falling apart is a slow process. It was just that a very vocal group told us it would...and yet here we still are. Yes, here we still are. LL had to let go of 1/3 of their staff, close all overseas offices, and outsource support to the cheapest bidder. But we are still here and will continue to be here for a few more years, bemoaning the ever dropping concurrency. Until the lights go out at some point. there was a lot more to it imho. LL lost all trust with the homestead fiasco. the gambling laws lost a lot of people. the near death of camping lost a lot of people. the marketplace threats lost a lot of people. LL simply are not trustworthy and business needs trust. LL also need someone who really understands the mind of the avarage user, building a raft and a hut isnt anywhere near it. even this new forum is a failure.
  23. stone by stone. there have been a few posts from people asking where their inventory has gone, its been explained that this is a new suicide tactic from linden labs to make it easier to forget about. if a few have to ask, how many won't even bother to ask? laurel and hardy could manage LL better.
  24. its very easy to have a keylogger on these fraudulent sites. so as well as you paying them for lindens which you wont receive, you also risk having your Credit card details copied too. from there the site operators can shop for free with your credit. i would advise you cancel your CC and bear in mind next time the old adage; "if it looks too good to be true it probably is". you thought you could but L$ cheaper than LL sell them for? Lol.
