  1. Curses! I got to 9913m but ran into the yellow peril. I'll have to find another route.
  2. I've been at it again. I decided to go a little by road, and then get into the river, which includes a frozen lake. After that I didn't leave the wtaer and I set a new personal best at 9032m Then I quietly crashed. But I have a plan to get further, so I'm off again....
  3. I'm not getting involved in the discussion between you two because I'm skipping most of it, as I do with very long posts, even though I sometimes write such posts myself. But I read something that I want to comment on. Masami Kuramoto wrote: If you run a business in SL and that business pays for less land than you could own on an OpenSim grid, then you essentially give away your products for free -- not to your customers of course, but to Linden Lab, who then use your content to bind more people to their service. This is the reality for the vast majority of content creators in SL. They work for Linden Lab, not for themselves. The vast majority of creators (imo) work for themselves and not, as you stated, for Linden Lab. The vast majority (imo) don't make a lot of money from it, if any, but they would like to, and because some of them, including me, do make a lot of money from it, SL is *the* place to do it, regardless of the cost of land. It isn't possible to make a lot of money, or even aim at making a lot of money, in any other system, simply because there aren't sufficient users (potential customers) in any of them. Because most creators don't make a lot of money in SL, it is only a hobby for them, but it's a hobby that could eventually make good money. Creators in OS grids have to be hobbyists because there isn't the potential in any of them for making a lot of money. So, if a creator isn't interested in making good money, then the OS grids might be the best systems for them, simply because they can have more land there for their money than in SL. But if a creator wants the possibility of making good money, then the only place to be is SL, and I imagine that the vast majority of creators want that possibility. For the vast majority of creators (imo), it boils down to this:- Which system has the potential of making good money from creating stuff? And there's only one answer to that question. Land and prims don't come into it. For the relatively small number of creators, who create only for the sake of creating, if there are any of those, then that question doesn't arise, and (imo) an OS system is the best for them because of the land and prims, unless, of course, they want as many people as possible to see their creations, and then we're back to SL.
  4. Hugsy's expedition leaves only the 2nd and 3rd place up for grabs. Are you going for it?
  5. Brilliant, Hugsy. The sitting position and camera position often get skewed on that journey. What are those disc displays on the left of your screen? The middle one is obviously a compas but what are the other two?
  6. I decided to have a few more goes at it and I got a lot further than I have before (all the way through the snow sims), because I used the roads from quite early on. But the vehicle isn't good on roads - it's too easy to let it go off the road and, if it goes into a security device parcel, it's curtains. The two I hit were instant, anyway. And there are plenty of ban lines at the edge of the road, and they are instant too. So I've stopped trying again.
  7. It was nowhere near Qie. There were about 4 items - now there's just one - I deleted some. The Objects folder was quite well sorted, with plenty of sub-folders. Before the stuff disappeared there were probably around 20 or 30 top level items in it. All I am left with now in the Objects folder are 5 sub-folders and less than a handful of top level items. The total number of items in my inventory is only 12,415, and that includes the Library stuff, so quantities weren't the problem.
  8. I just sent you an IM. I wanted to copy it to a PM here but it looks like you have them turned off.
  9. Just an aside: I was chatting with Coby a couple of days ago and I decided to get out an old magic carpet that I have and do a bit of flying around SL - something I've never got into. I just discovered that I no longer have it. It's disappeared along with hundreds of items from my Objects folder. Whole sub-folders full of stuff have disappeared, including my V3 slow dance! That's something else that people often moan about - inventory disappearing. That makes 2 common moans that I've experienced today that I haven't experienced before.
  10. A game similar to what you described crossed my mind earlier today. It would need points all over the land where it's possible to reach. A driver has to click objects, in order, around an imaginary course, but the course isn't layed out - it can't be. The purpose is to click as many objects as you can before crashing. You can go round and round the imaginary course but you have to click the objects in the right order - so you can't just go backwards and forwards between 2 of them. The problem with that is, once a person has figured out a route to get round the course, s/he can go round as many times as s/he likes, so it's not a game any more. It's only perseverance, or a case of how long you can last before SL fails and you crash, which isn't much of a game at all.
  11. It's all a bit.... something, when, instead of a maze with dead ends, there are crashes right, left, and centre - and crashes that often require the Task Manager to get out of. I did try the sea sims to the east (Zaharik, Thurston, etc.), instead of trying to go south around Coelho, but there are sea sim crashes everywhere you look. I even went back and just flew across those sea sims, to find out if having the vehicle was making it worse, and I don't think I managed to cross any sea sim border without flying off into eternity. If there wasn't a fixed distance limit, it could be quite a nice little game for a while, but it's SL not working properly that screws it up. Find another game
  12. Finity Westland wrote: One other thing which used to be true, and I think still is. The 512m allowance that can be used either for a Lindenhome or a plot of mainland can also instead be deducted from a larger plot of land you may purchase. Thus, if you were to purchase a 2048m plot of land, you would pay Tier as thought it were a (2048m-512m) 1536m plot, or a 1024m plot as thought it were a 512m plot. Note this only subtracts from the area of the plot, not the Tier level, so you will have to see if it would actually drop your Tier payments by using the adjusted plot size against the Tier level, but it is still a nice option if a 512m plot is too small for you. The other risk that hasn't been mentioned is that you might come to really like the weekly stipend, the Premium sandboxes, content, and occasional benefits so much that you can't face SL without them You are correct but I believe that one of your examples can be misleading. I haven't checked recently but I don't think there is a 1536m tier level. The levels go from 512 to 1024 to 2048 to 4096 and so on. That's how it used to be and I don't hink it's changed. So a 2048m parcel would be charged at the 2048m tier rate regardless of whether or not there's a tier-free 512 included in it. A 1024 would be charged at the 512 rate because of the tier-free 512m, but a 2048 would be charged at the 2048 rate, in spite of the tier-free 512, because there isn't a 1536 rate.

  14. 16 wrote: am having a bad day today. getting logged off quite a lot. i only ever get as far as Isabel. I haven't got anywhere close to Isabel. I haven't found a way past Coelho yet. Just touching that sim crashes me. I've experimented by skirting it through the waterways south west of it but no joy so far. And I've tried a couple of times going round the top of it but still no joy. It's not the failures that I'm fed up with. It's the crashing. Especially when it needs the Task Manager to get out of the crash. I suppose I should be thankful that it hasn't needed a computer roboot.

I've been going north to the north continent, but I now see that, even if I got as far north as possible, it wouldn't be as far as Dali. yes thats right. Dali is the farthest away go east young man (: I did. And I've given up. I tried quite a few times today but there's an area that I haven't found my way past. It's a particular water sim. I haven't tried every possible route but I'm fed up of crashing all over the place, often needing to use the Task Manager to close SL down, so I give up on it. It could be quite a good little game (for a short time) if SL were capable of working properly by not crashing you when it really shouldn't do - at yellow lines.

Others have been at it since the thread was started and 16 isn't in the first 3 now. The last I looked, Hugsy was on top with an astonishing 9000+. The current top 3 are:- Hugsy with 9098, followed by 2 from Devyn Chant - 5490 and 5451. Those yellow lines stopped me getting onto the podium pics or it didnt happen q; (: It doesn't need pics because I didn't get on the podium. And if I do get on the podium, you'll be able to see it there

  19. 1787 – William Herschel discovers Titania and Oberon, two moons of Uranus. For the last 3 days we've had a live 'Star Watch' programme here in the UK, in which people all over the country watched stars and stuff. For the programme, the BBC organised the building of a replica of Herschel's telescope - the one that he used for years, and through which he discovered those moons. It wasn't an exact replica - it used modern scaffolding and such - but the dimensions of the mirror and tube were identical. Also, the mirror was glass whereas Herschel's was metal.
  20. So I tried it. First attempt: I ended up in the middle of some water, the vehicle was nowhere to be seen, and I couldn't move or teleport anywhere. Results: relogged. Second attempt: I ended up at the bottom of some water, the vehicle was nowhere to be seen, but I could teleport so I TPed home. Results: stuck in the 'sit in vehicle' animation and had to relog. Third attempt: I stayed at home. Result: no need to relog. In the process of the two attempts I sometimes flipped to what looked like first person view and soared into the sky and underwater, rotating all the way. And that's supposed to be fun? SL, or the vehicle, isn't up to it.
  21. I look forward to meeting you there. But, today, I'm unlikely to be at the keyboard from now until I go to bed even though I'll be logged in. However, if you see me on your radar, IM me and, if I'm afk but spot it a bit later, I'll IM you as soon as I see it.

So, even if we want to make things in SL to be the same size as things in RL, which size do we use? If we make the avatar height (in meters), as stated in the shape/appearance editor, the same as the actual RL meter height, it will be a long way off. Linden Lab viewer shows what is called "Agent Height". This agent height is shorter than actual avatar mesh is, as you verified by measuring the avatar with prim. There are some viewers, HUDs, and scripted prims which have a correction factor, they use the "Agent Height" and add the correction factor, thus getting very close to the real avatar mesh height. (Beware though, there are lots of measuring devices which use the "Agent Height" without correction factor). However, the only exact accurate way to measure the avatar mesh height is doing it by prim. Linden Lab is aware of this matter, there is even a JIRA: Incorrect height information in appearance editor Status: Aknowledged Resolution: Unresolved So, in order to make avatar the same size as in RL, we will measure avatar height with prim - so far until Linden Lab gets the appearance editor changed so that instead of "Agent Height" it will show the real mesh height. on the Jira they all start rabbit on about change the AgentHeight function itself. then worry all about what might get broken and then end up do nothing is quite frustrating when linden overcomplicate things. same the residents who join into those kinds of discussions. they all end up paralyse themselves when they do this is a cosmetic fix only needed. which can do in the viewer code all they have to do is take Agent Height as report by the existing function and multiple by 1.17 and show that value on the label in the shape editor. then the shape editor value will be the same as the prim value the fact that Agent Height function reports a different height to the avatar mesh height is not the point. the point is that the reported shape editor value should be the same as the reported prim height value. dunno why they dont seem to understand that They probably do but they probably prefered to do nothing and, because the users did what you said, they used it as the reason for doing nothing.
  23. Yep. That's pretty much what it looked like to me. I entered a room where 2 other people were, one of whom was, like me, trying to figure out how to walk lol. I'd guess that the other was the room's owner? as he seemed to know what he was doing. Going from SL to IMVU meant that IMVU was of no interest to me but not because it was different. I came to SL from a scrolling text system - very different - and I found that SL was *right* up my street. It appealed to me enormously.
