  1. Some communities and creator groups have servers for members of specific communities and work groups. They aren’t listed or open because they get a lot of off topic stuff, tourists and trolls. Ask around in your interest groups to turn up specific ones. BVN, Blogger and Vlogger Network is a good one that covers topics you may like, join the inworld group, then ask for the Discord invitation.

"If you can't/won't pay for it, just don't buy it"

And keep your mouth shut? Sorry, that is not how discussion forums and opinions work. If my opinion is its overpriced, that is what you are going to hear from me. Don't agree? Fair enough.

My biggest gripe with the fee is that it is a premium feature. I'm already paying for those. If you feel this new one is worth bumping the premium price up, fine. Do that and let me decide. I'd actually pay 50 cents more a month, maybe a dollar (they'd eventually get way more than 40 bucks out of me), or more if it was paired with something else. But a 40 bucks up front fee that shuts out basics? Okay....

So many users wanted this and only the ones willing to pay roughly 10 bucks a month and 40 up front (roughly 160 bucks in year one and 120 thereafter) get it. Alrighty then...

A lot of people will buy this. Good for business.

A lot of people who wanted it won't. Bad for business.

Your first line is ultimately the bottom line. It’s an option feature, an add-on, in no way required.
I certainly don’t think anyone should ‘keep their mouth shut about it’ especially in open discussion places that should and hopefully do welcome everyone to speak their opinion. But there are going to be features that are not targeted at everyone. And with the new tier of premium still to be seen, more still to come that are being marketed to currently paying members, but don’t exclude those who wish to upgrade, either.
Every member with an account in good standing is eligible to upgrade to a premium membership, everyone retains full access to display names regardless of account type so it seems no one will have any current options downgraded. Regardless, it’s OK for a business to decide how to upcharge their add-on extras. It will never please everyone.

  3. With new last names coming Soon™ and the big list of old ones here , let’s have a little fun with name speculation, funny SL names, guesses on the new ones, names we like, etc.

    • keep it PG-13 or so, though who am I to restrict/reject double entendre?
    • consult that list and don’t dupe existing ones, or risk the plonk. Harsh!
    • funny first/last combos welcome But new last name preferred since some people are quite grumpy old ones won’t be revived.
    • don’t submit your ‘super fabulous best last name ever’ here unless/until you already safely entered the contest. LL will score them, choosing 5 winning entries. If duplicates are submitted, first to submit it is eligible to win.

Gault, Shonagon, Echivarious, Runcible, Renata are a few of mine. My cousin needs one, so I gave them to her, heh.

get the impression that old surnames won't be available to pick... Is that true? If so: Whyyyyyy?

True. I’m assuming because too many of the ‘common’ first names were used up already, leaving a lesser selection. But it’s true, the new surnames will all be brand new. You could both switch to a new one?

  5. I’d like to see some smaller experimental projects.

    1. A high rise luxury apartment complex in an amazing skyscraper in the clouds
    2. A cyberpunk installation community cooperative.
Play with height, environment settings at height levels etc. on these first two, probably not practical but it’s a wish/idea thread. 🙃
    3. Artist commune, urban, street exhibits, cafes, rooms for let, studios, galleries.
    4. Small business district, also urban, a residential/commercial neighborhood with 2-3 story shop/apartments

  6. Since at least one LL employee was (previous to their hire), very casually open about never inputting any money whatsoever into SL, and with never any plans to, I don’t see how anyone can seriously think the Lab would get rid of 100% free accounts. Choices are good. Levels of involvement, including different financial ones, are OK. I’m a bit surprised there has never been more ‘premium only’ areas besides a few sandboxes, and I was also surprised there was not more kerfluffle over the spots on full sims reserved for premium members. Since time is money, that’s one of the best perks I have enjoyed as a premium member. As long as I have been a member, land options have existed to exclude NPIOF, and that’s OK.

But TANSTAAFL. Someone always pays, and offering the ones who input money some perks and extras is OK. Which ones, and to whom, also OK for a private business to decide for their own company, and chances are if some paid perk is really not to your taste, you aren’t the target market for it anyway. Which is OK.

  7. Granted, it’s now only a gourmet pineapple-lovers delicacy, only a few places serve it and it’s 10x the price. Riots ensue. You are implicated as the instigator and now hiding from an angry mob.

    also my pizza is here!

I wish I could think of some really killer 2020 New Year’s resolutions besides RL and SL KonMari.

  8. Well...I did happen to think that at least once, resident protest (reducing non-premium account group limits) has successfully caused LL to reconsider it so there will always be people who will protest limits or features that aren’t suited to them. Hm. It’s probably happened more than once, but I can’t think of any other times LL has actually said ‘x is a thing’, then said ‘well ok, since so many of you protested x, we will change it’.
Is the account last name issue really so much of a thing? I usually just say ‘Fauve’ and there’s no confusion because there are few of us. Maybe a perk of having a weird name? But not a limitation (or a privilege) because I chose my name from what was available just as everyone else. Limits and privilege are just different in SL than in RL. We have different choices. It causes different issues and has different outcomes and benefits. Regardless of account name status or time in-world,  because we all have the display name option, absolutely everyone already has (within reason and within the rules) a decently useful, even change-able name option.

  9. Granted, you now know how to paint. Welcome to the wonderful world where .5% of focus is on actual creativity and 95.5% of it is hype, marketing, schmoozing, competition and social media. Yes even if you don’t care about it. You care about it. Bleh.

    I’m gonna do it...you can’t stop me...

    I wish I had a(nother) pizza.

  10. I guess not a peeve, just an opinion and some (hopefully humorous) ’peeve prevention’. Yes I know many people are protective of their peeve pets but some of us also take pleasure in working them out. I find it oddly satisfying when I can solve one of mine and shopping events was a biggie! Just a fun if long post so just skip if not in the mood for some silliness, I have a cold and I’m a bit bored today.

For my needs and tastes there are still too many and too frequent strictly shopping events on the grid that each last too long, more often than biannual or quarterly for any of the booth or machine events (without an immersive sim or an entertainment factor too) just isn’t very interesting for me anymore unless I really like the theme. A shopping event grinding on after 2 weeks with 3 people on the sim full of samey-same shopping displays just lost any excitement for me. I’ve really stopped being excited for any monthly events.

this is where the cut would go, if this forum supported them. 😉

Fauve’s Shopping Event Peeve Prevention Tactics:

    • Follow my favorite creators for advance sneak peeks, this is fun just because I’m a curious person. I usually do it on Discord or Flickr and it’s much *more* fun since I completely stopped using Facebook for SL. But FBxSL is another peeve/rant completely.
    • Peruse the shopping guide if there is one. Yes stores are always missing, but it still saves time.
    • Alpha myself or wear my my low-weight, no script shopping suit of the moment.
    • Set ‘render friends only’ (persistent after TP), engage my pre-made mostly-potato-level graphics preset. LOD on 4 so inevitable crappy meshes will render in the shopping area but prepared to switch it back to to 2 to evaluate the rez area items.
    • Turn all remaining SL sounds off, preferably turn on nice music of my own choosing in the background,
    • Premium status means little to no waiting, I actually threw out my tp hammer, so...TP in, move about 5 steps Backward, fewer people bunch up behind the TP point, everyone rushes forward.
    • Cam out, adjust draw distance to fit the event, no larger.
    • Go AFK for at least 5 minutes so everything rezzes fully. Might seem wasteful but it saves time because I can shop much more quickly when things are rezzed. Use this time to procure a tasty beverage, possibly mildly alcoholic, and a snack if necessary to prevent (excessive) hangry snark over the sartorial offerings.
    • Cam shop counter clockwise for the first half of the booths, clockwise for the second, TP to the rez area if I’m considering anything there, look at the wireframes. grab a demo of anything I’m uncertain of, usually throw it away untested in my monthly cleaning because I rarely return after he first visit anyway. 😹
    • Return home, stick everything in a labeled and dated folder and spend the next {unspecified time, but usually up to a month} pulling out a new thing in odd free moments and wearing or placing them.

I like hearing how people do things like shopping in SL, especially if they are funny and reflective lists or in an amusing how-to format but I can’t really think of a good new thread topic for it, maybe ‘How I do...X in SL”?

Years ago, when I thought I had actual friends from the Forums, I opened up and got trolled for it, and it hurt.

I’m sorry this happened. That’s the risk always for me when I share something real in a place online. I don’t do it as much or as openly as I used to anymore but there is also something so profound about being able to share even some measure of my joys and sorrows, that even with the risk of trolls, misunderstanding and drama, I’m very glad that many of us still do it a little, and learn things and make some important emotional connections as a result.

  12. I don’t think it’s that ‘feeling happy and sharing it in a feelings thread’ is hypocritical, I think it’s more that people who only share the happy but don’t share struggle, pain and other vulnerability too are frequently  (often in error) looked at as hypocritical, or worse it’s seen as an engineered attempt to paint a certain picture, one that only includes part of the equation. I really don’t begrudge anyone their happiness, and often if they can only bring themselves to share that part then they are already missing the full benefit of the ‘people’ connection so it’s really a bit too bad.
