  1. I was very surprised (and a little sad - Slink is still my favorite and most worn body), but it sounds like a change will be good for her, and I wish her the best in her new endeavors.

edit to add:  It's already 1/1/23 for Siddean, but there's one little section of the region that's still accessible, and you can cam into the store from there to shop if there's something last minute that you want to get (or to spend your remaining credits on).

  2. I believe that it is a Preference setting.  The default SL viewer does not have that as a visible option, nor does it do that.  The Kokua viewer has a checkbox on the Preferences -> Notifications tab to "Log filename of save snapshot in chat history".

I don't have the FS viewer to check where it might be in that viewer, but I'd start with looking through Preferences or maybe ask in the FS inworld group or wait for a FS user to answer here (it seems the majority of active forum users are FS users).

Just because most people in SL decided, on their own, to make themselves taller than that which is naturally possible for a human being,

I take exception to the part I bolded - I don't believe that all tall avatars were ones where the person decided on their own to make an avatar that tall.   People may be using shapes and heights that were the normal heights at the time that they started and may have not had any reason to change them, especially if they are comparable with sizes of others they hang out with and with the buildings and furnishings that they normally use.

Not everyone is obsessed with knowing exactly how tall (in RL terms) their avatar is, or with needing to have their avatar the same as their RL height.  When I first joined SL, I used a starter avatar and then a free shape that I picked up from one of the stores with gifts for new avatars.  I had no concept for quite a while about how tall my avatar was, and I didn't really care in the early days - when I went places I seemed to be around the same general height as other women, and it was a good height for my house and furnishings.    It was only later after making some friends that someone explained to me how to modify my shape and how to decrease the height of my avatar (down to 2 meters, lol, from what it had been).

It wasn't until a few years later after I started reading the forums that I found out some people liked to have avatars that were a more RL realistic height.  At some point the height of the starter avatars was decreased to more normal heights.  Eventually, I did decrease the height of my avatar closer to my RL height.  However, sometimes I regret that I did that because I do have a couple of houses from my early days that I really like and have tried to use again, but they just don't feel right anymore now that I'm not as tall.

I think it may have been wiser for the measurements in SL to just be "units" rather than "meters".   Then I don't think there would be all the complaints about non-RL sizes of things.

  4. I would not have a problem with having to go to the inworld store for a demo.  I prefer to shop at inworld stores, so if I was going to buy the item I'd want to go to the inworld store anyway to buy it.

If I use the MP it's generally as a catalog for finding stores that might have what I'm looking for, when what I want isn't at any of the stores I normally shop at.

I do enjoy seeing how people have their stores set up or decorated.  Whether it's right or wrong, I do feel like having an inworld store indicates an ongoing presence and involvement of the creator with the SL community in general.

I don't know if this is connected to lower rent issues but a friend and I just bought a sim and are going to be paying lower than average fees for the rental of the land thereafter.  Regrettably, I only googled the real estate agency after the payment of the original fee and one month's rent.  I would like to know if a real estate agency can rent a property for a low price the first month or so and then suddenly raise the prices.  If this happens, is there any recourse for the renter?

    Thanks for your attention.

You should carefully check any N/C's you were given by the real estate agency to see if there was any mention of the initial price being a time-limited discount price.  If you don't find anything in the info provided, check with the real estate agent and ask if the initial price will be the on-going price as well and if there should be increases in the future, how much advance notice do they provide, etc.

  6. If you're wanting to find new skins to wear on one of the existing starter avatars, you'll need to look for skins which indicate they will fit system avatars (or say that they are BOM skins - but in this case make sure that the skin is for both body and head.  Some of the newer BOM skins are just for the body or just for the head, as they are intended to be worn by avatars who wear one brand of a BOM enabled mesh body and a different brand BOM enabled mesh head).

In terms of mesh clothes for the existing starter avatars, probably ones that include the 'standard sizing' will be the best bet, but be sure to try demos first, if demos are available.   For men's clothing, it wouldn't hurt to try some of the demos also of clothes for various mesh body brands - depending on the clothing type there might be some items of clothing for a specific mesh body brand that still might work OK on a starter system avatar.

If I buy a private undeveloped region:

    Set Up Fee: USD 349.00
    Monthly Maintenance:
    USD 229.00
    Maximum Prims: 20,000

am I still going to have to pay the $166 in land use fees on top of the $229 monthly? I know, dumb question, but it's been a long and difficult search. I just want the point blank "yes" or "no"

In this scenario, no, you would only pay the private island $229 monthly maintenance fee.

I thought I read somewhere that recently also people in USA have to pay tax now. I misread?

It depends on what types of services are considered taxable in the State the person lives in.  The amount of the sales tax rate, if applicable, is not the same across all States either, or even across all tax jurisdictions - it can vary by city or county depending on local additions to the sales tax rate.

  9. The only times I've changed all my landscaping to autumn or winter was when I rented a parcel in a region where the entire region changed seasons.  Otherwise, on my mainland parcel it's pretty much a spring/summer look all year.  I have given some thought to changing out trees, shrubs and flowers to autumn colors in the fall, but I haven't really done that yet - perhaps next year.

It doesn't snow where I live in RL, so we never have a white Christmas.   In SL, it's hard to find a lot of outdoor Christmas decorations that do not include a snowy base or snowy objects.

Yes, it looks like the fees starting at 8,192 sq and going all the way up have decreased. Here's a chart with old prices for reference: https://secondlife.com/land/pricing

Thanks, that's what I thought, but wasn't sure.  It must have happened very recently.  I think during the last Lab Gab with Grumpity and Patch, Grumpity mentioned something about some tier costs being re-adjusted.

ETA:  That puts the difference between a 4096 and an 8192 really close - only $9 more for twice the size.  I'm going to have to be extra careful to not look at parcels for sale for a couple of months...

  11. Maybe in the upper tiers (starting with 1/8 region)?  I haven't had an 1/8 or larger for quite a while, but I had thought the 1/8 was like 35 or 36 per month, but I could be wrong.  The lower tiers are the same as they have been for a while.

  12. I always delete the shoe bases that come with the shoes and instead just use the ones that came with my body.  I put links to the body shoe bases in enclosing folder where I keep shoes, so they're readily available to put on when I'm putting on shoes that need a shoe base.

percentage of SL users are aged 40+ and do not use/have gaming computers or computers that can handle ALM all the time

I'm not sure what the age of the user has to do with whether they have a gaming computer or computer that can handle ALM all the time.  I'm well past 40 and have both a gaming PC and a gaming laptop, both of which I purchased specifically for SL after I started spending a lot of time in SL.   I run all the time with ALM on.

Well nothing new, no help.  When I was in SL years ago everyone was willing to help, not today.  serious thinking of leaving, it is such a waste

People have tried to help with the chat letter size issue.  If you're using the SL or Kokua viewer, the chat size selector is found in Preferences -> Chat & IM -> General.

For the being a cloud issue, you can look at Firestorm viewer bake fail help   Even if you are not using the FS viewer, the troubleshooting tips should still work with other viewers.

It really helps when you have issues like you are having, for you to at least indicate which viewer you are using and also copy/paste the information from your viewer's Help -> About <viewer name> pop-up window.   The pop-up window has a copy to clipboard button, so it is easy to copy that info and then post it here. This will allow people to see what your viewer settings are so that they can offer suggestions about why everything you're seeing is staying grey.
