  1. Kimberley ( as I remember) has what are called system feet, and there are shoes made for these feet. In the folder with these shoes is a shoebase (the white sock thingy you can see) and a alpha layer which hides the parts of the shoebase necessary to get a good fit. So you wear them altogether

the other type of shoes are made to fit mesh feet (typically we have to buy these feet). A example are Slink feet. There are others as well. In the folder with mesh feet is also a shoebase and a alpha layer. Which we wear altogether, so that the feet when bare look great. Mesh shoes well-made exclusively for the mesh feet type will fit perfectly over these feet

when buying shoes we need to be sure that we buy the right type of shoe for the feet we are wearing. Get demoes before buying anything

    +

about the up and down. This happens when the height of our avatar is different to the height of the shoe makers avatar. So we have to reposition the shoes sometimes to fit our own self

    to do this:

    a) if you don't already have one. Search on Marketplace for a POSE STAND. Is a number of free ones you can get

    b) Rez the pose stand on the ground and then right-click Sit/Pose on it. This will pose your avatar in a fixed position, holding your avatar still

    c) then right-click on the shoes and Edit. On the Edit dialog are Move and Rotate options. Choose the option and we get green/red/blue editing handles on screen. By selecting the handles with our mouse we can move the shoes into the position we want

it can take a while to get the hang of editing. Zooming and panning the viewer camera view to see the shoes (and other accessories) better, can make things go a bit easier. Perserve tho and soon you will be a whiz at it like everybody else

Coming here now at this late date asking for help smacks of desperation and incompetence.

no it doesn't smack of desperation and incompetence

OP already said (in their second post) that when he began his paper he was focusing on VR as seen and experienced thru VR input devices (headsets)

his exploration of this lead him to consider other forms of input device experiences for maybe inclusion in his paper

is how students learn. One thing leads to another. If they already knew what those others things were already, then they would have nothing to learn, and they wouldn't be a student

is a maybe inclusion, which will depend on the quality of information that he can gather in the time remaining. Should the info be of low quality and detract from the paper then he wont include it, and still get a A for his paper

  3. just about why this is. Why cant we totally hide ?

the basic principle is: If you can see me then I can see you (scripted or visually)

if we were unable to be seen then our ability to see others would necessarily have to be turned off also

were this not to happen then it would be the stalker's perfect scenario. The ability to see their victims while not being seen in turn. The phantom stalker

fun to build the best contribution you can to the scene already surrounding whatever land you own.

(Screens are fine for a skybox, though, because the whole thing "always looks stupid when the cam pulls back." Except space stations, maybe.)

yes. Is way more fun, and is the joy of longstay mainlander builders

building in harmony with the land and in sympathy with the pre-existing neighbours. While at the same time adding little touches and flourishes that add to the diversity of expression in the area. I think that building is about storytelling, and pretty much all longstay mainlanders are into this as well

    +

about the sky. Some thoughts to add to the mix

sometimes a person will enclose their skybox in a hollow sphere and then texture the outside of the sphere in a planet/moon/sun like texture. Sometimes the inside surface is transparent and sometimes internally it displays a different sky scene

this often sparks neighbours to do the same. And can end with all these little constellations of space bodies strung thru the sky. Is pretty cool when this happens

then what happens some people then start making Saturn-like planet exteriors, with rings and stuff and all kinds. So even more cool

i saw this really really cool thing a while ago now. And so simple to do

the person had a skybox city apartment which was contained in a hollow box. On the inside of the box they had a city scene textured. Like you do

then they enclosed the whole box in a hollow sphere. On the outside was a texture map of the Earth. And the texture rotated ever so slowly. It was timed to complete 1 rotation in a SL day

then outside this was another sphere with a semi-transparent weather texture. Clouds which also rotated in a random walk fashion. Was pretty cool. 2 prims and the neighbours had something other than a big black box to look at

is storytelling this. When live in the heavens what is it that we can reasonably expect to see. Celestial bodies (and/or spacey stuff like you mention already). Whats inslde theses bodies can be anything

look at the pic that ChinRey posted and think: how could I make something like that work ?

As much as I'd love to steal the credits, it was Parhelion Palou who posted that lovely picture, not me.
    ;)

eeps. Sorry about that Parhelion. I fix it

  6. i dont mean to discourage you. Don't sell this land. A unrestricted sunset view across the water is what you want and is why you bought it

so dont give it away just bc you have good feelings toward your neighbours, and specially dont give it away just bc somebody like me goes: umm!

look at the pic that ChinRey Parhelion posted and think: how could I make something like that work ?

then think about what if I made a little island that rises up above the water say 8 to 10 metres. Then the base of the island would be sandy textures blending in with the existing terrain and as it rises it would green on the top. Then I make my little zen place on top

so that when my neighbours see it then they see the way the island textures blend with the existing sandy terrain (which is the key to this kinda thing). And that it is a actual little island

have a look inworld at the seaside merchants places, they make all kinds of organic land shapes for this exact purpose. And then bc it is a island above sea level, other kinds of trees (not just palm and cabbage) can and do grow

basically there is a story to this island that is not OOC in the wider setting

keep it and keep building and keep thinking about it. You will be ok

  7. as a first attempt at building its ok. I know its your first attempt bc I can tell from your prim and texture alignments (:

you will get better at this, the more you do it

you have a really good parcel. Is west facing over the ocean. And defo you bought it for the sunset

ChinRey is making a point about environment. The parcels to the left with the cabbage trees on are for sale. 2 parcels over is a jetty. And over the other side is another jetty with boats moored

if this was me then I would be thinking about how to build what I want (a beach house) that fits in with my jetty neigbours, and will encourage someone like-minded to buy the forsale parcels. Someone who goes oooh! beach/boatie community. I think I will move in

so heres how I would approach the build

I'd dump the screens, they are not beach trees. I'd dump the platform and put the house on poles. Then I would build decking in a way that allows water to surround the pole house. Then drop some pot plants and garden boxes on the decking, for greenery and judicious screening of the outdoor living area. Focusing the flow toward the west. To capture that lovely sunset

with the back of the house and the far side. I would cut windows to break up the lines of what is currently a barn like structure when viewed by the neighbours behind and far side

i would also put a narrow deck all the way round (or at least under the windows) and then outside the windows I would drop pot plants on the deck, so that when inside looking out the windows then can see the plants. The plants would also break up the lines when viewed from the neighbours properties

    +

eta: if I did want grass then I'd either put a boxed lawn on the decking, or not have decking and build the base out of stone. Retaining wall style, sides and back. with a sandy beach west facing front like you have now

    (: yes

is kinda funny weird how we go sometimes

like o.m.g !!! somebody left a whole 3 micro cycles spare. What a waste !! quick quick stick something in it. Next thing kaabooom!! and it all falls over

so get the engineer in and say to them. What have you done ??!! its not working !! fix it !!!!

engineer goes: umm! theres this thingy called physical restraints. And we go: thats sounds pretty boring. And we all fall asleep while the engineer is tell us all about it. zzzzzz !!

then after we wake up the engineer goes: Or! we could use magic !!

and we all look at each other and go: wooooo! that be cool. Like way cool ! And we say to the engineer: sooooo! where we get some of that magic engineer

and the engineer start rub their head and make a aaaaaahhhing noise. And we go: are you ok ? do you need to have a liedown. We had a liedown before. A sleep even. So you have a liedown ok and will be alright. But not to long ok. bc you still have to fix what you broke. At least until we get a magic engineer

    jejeje (:

  9. all the time

my Clothing and Body Parts folders are pretty well organised as well

i have a base folder as well which contains the bare essentials. When putting a new outfit together then apply the base folder and then add to it

    base essentials for me is:

shape. eyes. eyebrow base. skin. hair

tattoo/makeup layers (hair base, eyeshadow, eyeliner, lippy, teeth, body dehancer) i used to have another skin once which included a nose layer and facial imperfections layer. So 6 tattoo layers (upto 8) as the base. And two clothing layers so not to be nekkid by accident

    alpha layer: Eyelash hider

attachments: mesh eyelashes. eye sparkles, hintlight. smiler. AO and dance hud. I used to have mesh hands and feet and I will most likely get again so they will be base as well

and then I get dressed. mix n match. Saving this as a outfit. Saving as new when I add/remove stuff

i also have some tweaked shapes to fit some clothes. They are minor body tweaks. I am a bit picky like that when comes to fittings. I just dont like clothes that overgap or overleak. So I dont mind squeezing myself in, or letting my body relax, into something I really like. I do that in the RL as well. bc well !!

i try to only have one of a thing in my inventory/closet. Altho with a lot of the texture change HUDs now I will make inventory copies of the clothing/accessories with the textures I want. So I dont have to keep using the texture HUD. Same with boots and shoes. Sometimes need to move them a bit from standard bare foot/leg up or down depending on how the mesh pants cuffs are shaped, so I make copies that are in the position needed

    - I thought that someone might create a small version of SL using Sansar, but then I read how the creation process works in Sansar. If you want to change your world, it has to be edited offline, then it goes through an optimization process, then your world/experience goes online. Say you rent out parcels in your Sansar world ... nobody but you (unless you want to hand out your password) would be able to modify their parcel

I suppose it could be worked this. Tenant parcel terraforming probably be out. So a planned estate, similar to Linden Homes and other SL planned home private estates

it would be possible I think to emulate terraforming with mesh objects, assuming the experience owner allowed this in the convenant

Ebbe Linden did say once that the ability to mount/move/tweak objects in the runtime would be a prerequiste. Hopefully that still remains the case

  11. as you probably worked out by now, everybody replying has had this convo before. A number of times now

the cool thing about you Nalytha is that you are quite passionate about pretty much everything to do with virtuals seems like. Worlds, games, experiences, etc. Is also apparent that you do research stuff, and think about it. You have a curious mind. How does that work ? Why does it work like that ? Who does that ? How could it be done another way ? Why would it be done in that another way ? And on and on and on

i think thats really cool. The curious mind. Lots of people who have sustained SL over the time, thru just showing up and doing whatever, have curious minds. Even when they can sometimes think they dont. And at other times can sometimes get or feel a bit jaded or a bit worn down

we can be a bit self-deprecating about it all sometimes as well. Like. Topic. Chat chat chat blah de blah blah. ooo! look! a shiny !! Totes distraction (:

    +

i am reasonably sure that you are going to love SL, deeply and passionately. Like most of us, you maybe develop a healthy dose of skepticism about the provider LL, but SL (the world itself and the people within) is where we come from pretty much. And is ok this

also bc you do research stuff and think about it, is why you are being replied to here by everyone (who have had this same convo a lot). Your curiousity and pursuit of shiny is really appealing to some/many SLers (:

Now. my understanding is you rent a domain from LL but you have to find your server space on your own and pay for it separately. LL won't be hosting the sims themselves

am not sure about this. Is possible and if so then it would seem to be a Enterprise Edition for some specialist standalone large org purpose. A off-the-grid thingy

if private servers were connected to the grid then there would be issues in this for carriables (avatar models, layers, clothing and accessories). Is very similar to the issues that Opensim has with this aspect

for sure there would be some creatives who would enter into RL contracts with Enterprise Edition owner/providers for content for that enterprise, but I am not seeing how that would eventuate into a millions and millions participant market

  13. ChinRey wrote:

Ebbe mentioned something like that early in the process. But it turns out the biggest simulation Sansar can manage is 4x4 km - the euqivalent of about 250 sims. Anything bigger than that and the physics become "unpredictable".

it depends on the math library (and underlying hardware/chips) the effect of [float] math rounding. Not sure if Sansar will be using 32bit or 64bit server hardware. If 32bit then 4K is about right. Is why the Z (sky)  in SL is 4K also

    eta [float]

Sansar is supposed to have much more advanced graphics than Second Life and still be able to run consistently with an fps of 90 or more. That requires content far better optimized for performance than what you see in Second Life. Not only individual items, the whole scene will have to be made from parts made right from the start to work together as efficiently as possible. There's simply no room for a hundred thousand happy hobby builders in a scenario like that,

is not quite true this. About 90FPS

Nvidia have said that with the new 10 series cards their goal is to have all of the top selling games run at 45FPS eventually

what happens with games is that when content efficiency peak is reached on one part (like textures for example) then the creatives fill the released space up with other stuff. Fluids, cloth, morph animation, etc

it will be the same on Sansar as it is now with SL, as it is with other 3D games and environments. Is just how creatives are, both amateurs and professionals. They will fill the space up when there is a space to fill

is really only techies who have to manage the spaces that do the omgs about this. Creatives just go pffft! gimme moar space. and hurry up ok (:

They say it a few different ways in the chat but they repeatedly say they want to be the next big thing in terms of what comes after SL. Apparently even if sansar canibilizes SL.

when Sansar was first announced Ebbe Linden said it is inevitable that given the advances in technology, a successor technical platform to SL is inevitable

as he put it at the time: Like SL but better. (better meaning technically better, breaking the creakiness and constraints of the SL sim server paradigm)

his view as CEO of LL was that if LL doesnt create this successor technical platform then some other company will

    +

the main difference between SL and MMO is that in SL there is no structured goal/game mechanics created by the provider. We have to create these for ourselves. It is hoped I think, that with a more advanced platform then Sansar residents will have better tools to create goal/game oriented mechanics (MMO-style etc) for others to participate in and enjoy

and also bc the new sim server paradigm, then own spaces (homes etc) within it are no longer restricted by size (sqm in SL). That the space for our home/experience (black box)  is virtually unlimited. The limit is LI (content-based) rather than arbitrary virtual sqm. We can pack our LI (stuff) into a single room, or we can spread it far, a island in the sea for example. Distance no longer being a tight constraint as it is on SL

    +

the main difference between world creation platforms like Unity etc and SL (and Sansar going forward) is the absence of resident connectively between the individual worlds created on those platforms. SL for all its creakiness (and Sansar less creaky) does provide that seamless connectivity

  16. much of the convo that SL residents have had, revolves around their friends and their inventories

    a) if my friends go to Sansar then I will also

    b) can I take my SL stuff/inventory with me ? If not then I will stay in SL bc I want to keep my stuff

also (and is quite important this to those involved) some of the stuff I do have in SL is from friends who are no longer with us in the RL, and is only in SL can this be preserved

  17. i am pretty ruthless with my inventory. If I find I don't wear or use something very often I file them under Delete (:

is some things that I get which I am pretty sure I will use/wear when I can find some other things to go with it, but if after a time I don't find those things then file Delete. I probably got more accessories than any one other category of stuff, then shoes/boots after that

my inventory never goes much above 7,000 items (including Library) mostly tho I get all ruthless and stay at about 4,000. Clothes-wise I maybe got 20 outfits max at one time. But even then I purge them pretty constantly also. So about 7-10 complete outfits really mostly

    +

i am the same in the RL. If I dont use stuff or wear it then is off to the Sallies with them. If the Sallies dont need then I put outside on the footpath with a sign that says FREE. It always goes pretty much every time

  18. yes. Thats something that LL would be considering in their financial planning

they would be influenced by the occupancy rate of SL mainland, compared to the occupancy rate of Linden Homes, compared to the tenant occupancy rate of the estates. I think this would be a factor in setting the minimum experience space size (black box)

it would seem that the platform doesnt exclude a Estate/Experience owner from creating a contiguous landmass (as they can do now in SL) assuming that the landmass can be parcelled

is an open question whether LL itself will provide a contiguous land mass for dwellings. LL may but then they would be in competition with estates who might/may be doing the same. Something that has always created a contention between the estate owners and LL as a platform provider

my personal view is that Sansar residents will be able to lease a black box (skybox, a room) which they can furnish. But I am not sure that these will be able to be contiguous below whatever the min experience size is

  19. its similar in the: Estate Owner - Content Maker - LL Platform Provider sense of relationship

its similar from the Resident - Estate Owner - Content Maker sense of relationship

whats not similar is (and is still an unknown as LL havent said yet) is:

    a) governance of avatar behaviours in the Experience owners' created worlds

    b) provision of land (spaces is the new buzzword) to residents at parcel sizes less than the minimum Experience size. SL equivalent is Mainland

  20. Sansar is intended as a platform on which others (not LL) can build virtual worlds, which they own and manage [monetarise] in their own name. Leasing the server space to do so from LL. (SL equivalent is Estate)

Altogether Sansar is a universe of worlds/experiences. Experience is the new buzzword for this

LLs involvement in Sansar will be the administration of avatar accounts, a common currency across the worlds, content/inventory management and a web marketplace [content maker monetarisation], with bookkeeping/management of same

LL will no doubt build some inworld experiences to a) showcase what is possible, and b) enable entry into the universe (SL equivalent is Social Island and Portal Park) for those who don't come thru a Experience owner's own website portal

and these LL experiences will be quite limited (by concious choice and design) as are the SL ones that LL provide. So that people are encouraged to seek what they wish elsewhere. Elsewhere being the worlds/experiences created by others

    eta: [monetarise]

  21. agree

this is roleplay scenario. The money (tokens) is more about not allowing a person to empty the container without going to a lot of effort. Like if there were 200 tokens in the container then a person would need 200 alts to empty it

a person might have 5 alts and get 5 tokens. However they would all have to  complete the task to 'earn' the money, in a roleplay scenario

what the tokens are redeemed for is typically associated with the roleplay: uplevels, status, points, stuff, etc.  Rewards of little use outside of the roleplay itself

for sure some people will try and game anything just bc they can, but those involved in the roleplay kinda know who is faking it and who isnt

like for example, in the roleplay someone who has played for 10 hours should have approx. 80-120 rewards. If they have 500 rewards then they are faking it
