  1. At the risk of sounding snarky, this is kind of an expansion on the "Everything should be mod/copy" thingy. Though i dont always agree I have always considered people's points that I may not have considered, and have moved the needle on some products, or have pondered about how I can give such options and be happy with it. I can see that. Although I haven't had too many issues so far, there have been some for sure. When I make a comment on something it is not 100% and hardcore, and only offering one side. I'd prefer a system where you could get what you ask for, to be able to rename it however you want, but on the other hand for any person who may be viewing the item to not lose what the product actually is and who made it. I've posted why I think this is important, and not just a self-serving one, as I explained I have purchased OTHER peoples work because I coudl easily look it up - and do that to this day. I did also pose a solution - I could write a script that would allow it, but it would just place the original name perhaps in the description field. Would that be a happy medium or unacceptable? (Seems like a fair solution to me) rather than say promoting that creators have to change their permissions for an activity that perhaps the majority of players won't need or care about. Wouldn't this fall under LL's responsibility to ensure in the UI that you could see the underlying name of the product? Sure, thanks for your points being made, they are worthy of pondering on for sure. I can see it possibly needed for the use cases you presented, and forgive me for some ignorance in some things - as I don't buy a lot of shoes or clothing with huds, and my bias will most likely be from an asset/creation/gadget building position that may make me blind to some issues.
  2. NOTE: You never answered my question or addressed what I actually posted. This is all about human rights though. You have the right to be anything you want to be, as long as you don't trample on the right of others in doing so. You can be a gay teacher in a school, and have all the rights and respect that a teacher in that capacity should have. Who is against that? However, you have no right to teach our children about your sexuality, that is our job as parents. In short, it means that you already have your rights, but now you are going well and beyond that and starting to affect other people's lives - in some of these school cases without the express permission of the parents. Now who is against your rights? Do you have rights to educate children about sex subjects? How are you oppressed for an example, for being a gay teacher who just teaches Reading Writing and Arithmetic? Consider also that this would be exactly the same (and has been) and issue with STRAIGHT based sex education and was also equally railed against by concerned parents. No matter what side politically or socially we may be on, we MUST unite together on human rights. That's the only unifying argument to have. Anything else? PS. Regarding the video. I had teachers all through school that I NEVER heard anything about their private lives, their sexuality, their stories from home. EVER. BECAUSE THEY WERE PROFESSIONALS. There is a time and place. The workplace and when children are involved especially.
  3. Argument right back at you? Who would be in the right over this? I would assume someone who wants to improve the experience for EVERYONE and come to solutions, rather than just keep a bunch of paranoid, privacy hungry landowners abusing an eject system. Why don't you change YOUR mind for a positive change hmm?
  4. May is Mental Health Awareness Month across the United States, and this year, it may be more important than ever to focus on how mental health impacts important areas of our lives. This includes our physical health, how we deal with stress, our relationships with others and how we feel, think and behave.
  5. Unless they make some serious changes to the SL platform, and make it fit and ready for 2022 and beyond - (they would have had more chance competing with their Sansar platform) - they're not going to be much of a challenge to Roblox and Fortnite, who are today on the cutting edge of technology, and already have millions of GAMERS on their side right now - something SL doesn't seem to want here at all.
  6. @Frionil Fang Holy cow! Thanks for the tip! Hahaha funny how I can noob out sometimes lol! I've unchecked Load UI in the past for files that weren't mine because people have some weird setups, but I didn't even think of doing this for my own 2.79 files. Wow! Thanks so much, will save me a lot of time! They still shut off these items, but having the layers go into auto collections saves a big step fo sho
  7. So it begins... lol. I understand, but.. 1) Then don't buy it. 2) Contact the creator to give them feedback that their objects are not named intuitively 3) AND we don't need to give widespread powers just because a few creators can't name good 4) I'm assuming this only applies to No Mod items, as mod items can definitely change names, which I also disagree with because at one time I saw someone rename my item to "Name's Table" just because she changed the texture and name on it Of course now, I'm being cheeky but.. pretty soon we should just give you this
  8. Does one of those eras take place after 2000? As far as I've seen LGBTQ have had a Pride Decade and have been kicking it for awhile now. Your continue cries of oppression and unfair treatment is not the norm in the West - and no there is no war against women in the US. What more can I and others do for you that we haven't already? This is more of a cry for attention than anything else at this point. Go to another country, preferably a third world or non-democratic one, and fight your social justice war there - where it is actually needed. FIRST WORLD PROBLEMS
  9. The biggest draw for Roblox is of course creating worlds, but more so playing all the games that people make - it's huge business. Then of course the ability to sell one's creations in a limited capacity or other, and the promise that users can join the successful ones making big $$$. To lure them to SL would be to provide them the same tools and ability, and ease of such - and I'm not sure if that can really happen. Also, Roblox uses LUA which is a scripting language that at least once they learn they can use everywhere. This is important to me as well, although once one understands programming concepts and such they can move to other languages - it's important to me to be applying my time in say C# (which Sansar supports, but the interface to the world and updating scripts was intolerable and slow - needed to render an entire scene: miss a semicolon and you're wasting a lot of time), where C# can be used elsewhere. They are also a very much younger crowd, and would really need to see the benefits (and coolness) of coming to SL - but word on the street is SL is for fuddy duddies. It only makes it worse if they come and explore and get told 'get off my lawn!" within minutes, or scolded inworld just for being their precious little young naive selves, fooling around - and grandpa getting mad at them
  10. I'm still cleaning up old files when I open them from 2.79 and prior.. It is a mess when opening into 2.8+ because of new Collections, so all the old layers are missing their render buttons, etc have to go into it and reset it all. Not to mention old file layouts and settings, I gave up. Basically now if I want to revive something that is older, I just now append the objects into my new file instead and is much faster. Wasn't easy, and took a week to get used to it and back to full productivity again, but it is much nicer than older versions. Very jealous too haha that new Blender user have a nicer UI to learn it - while some of us were crazy enough to dive into it when it looked like an engineers panel "Ooops I hit a button somewhere and I don't know what happened..."
  11. @JeromFranzic You're right, because I am alone in this. This is only me, and the solution would be to join the other 19 and leave SL. LOL of course I'm posting with a bit of sarcasm, as suggesting "just leave" isn't really a constructive solution to an issue in SL is it ?
  12. I would be kind of against allowing people to rename my objects, as they are named appropriately with the edition already, and don't really think this is a very needed feature. Are we going to see campaigns from people now "Don't buy from creators with no mod, no copy, no rename!" now too? That being said, I could offer such a feature in my products very easily, but I would add my creator name into it, and maybe the original file name in the description field - that way a customer could rename the file - but I don't lose that identifying name that people have found me by product name in the past because they saw it inworld. Also, I find a lot of stuff inworld and literally because I can right-click any object I'm interested in, find out the product name and then go to the Marketplace and see if I can purchase it. Having the product title and the creator's name is a very important and beneficial feature in Second Life, and we should kind of not mess with it. I will also once again make a Sansar reference because unfortunately there, they decided to not include any object name, object creator or even object description - so anything you see inworld there you will never know the source or where it came from. This hurts creators because there is no random, driveby or organic advertising - this does drive sales, so this aspect should never be removed - or in the case of your suggestion we could have that feature but with some caveats that it does not remove important information in the process.
  13. You're just proving what I posted. You're responding to this by pointing the finger at me, rather than addressing (agreeing or disagreeing) with the points being made. If you agree, then post yes i agree. If you don't, post I disagree (and why and provide solutions). Speak for yourself as well, by using 'we' you act like you are the spokesperson for some undetermined group. I will also post what I want and how I want, because the intention is to improve Second Life. If you are not part of that, and only want to stalk and follow all my posts so you can follow it up with pointless stuff, then push off.
  14. I like Firestorm for technical info that it provides - much appreciated. I run Opensim and SL with two installs of Firestorm, but sadly they seem to want to use the same cache folder, which seems to cause problems. FS reads the OS and SL versions as the same and confuses users and passwords. Second Life Viewer was my go to for many years, mainly on trust but as I wanted more info than it provided, I needed more. Right now though, it seems to be displaying the environment and lights much better than FS, and crisper for some reason, so there's that. Tried Black Dragon, but it is a bit taxing of course and is not friendly to UHD displays with the tiny UI.
  15. My account is 10 years old, I'm not new to SL, but it has been quite a few years since I did a big exploration. Most recently to find some land and to do my second favourite activity besides creating: exploring. And things have changed quite a bit. many more ban lines, many more sniping eject bots (and set at 0 seconds) - and yesterday with an instant ban as well... The experience has changed somewhat from when I first joined SL, and it is noticeable so even if all of this existed prior and landowners were just as aggressive at 'protecting their goodies and privacy' before it certainly wasn't noticed. I guess I was fooled into thinking SL was an open place where people generally wanted to socialize, but in 2022 we're seeing they don't. More and more they're bringing real life property lines and silliness - and always claiming rampant abuse that simply isn't there - to rationalize their antisocial behaviour. But hey I can work with that. I'm a patient and understanding person. I'm all for balance and solutions though. For the most part anyone I have ever known playing on Second Life had good intentions, yet were subject to the same things that eventually contributed to them leaving the platform - and most likely to never return. I just feel compelled to offer my opinion, feedback and suggestions for solutions because we need more people to speak up in support of improving SL (from all views and perspectives and end usage). Just because someone is louder than someone else in any forum doesn't make them right, nor does it make them the majority opinion. I can also understand the needs of other people, their concerns and issues - and not always agree with them, so a happy medium and goal would be best. Notice how no one has addressed my actual concerns, and instead just want to post about how it is their right, etc and that they need protection, etc but do not offer alternatives, or solutions so that both parties could be happy. Yes: Allow ban lines, allow auto-eject, allow users to govern their lands as they see fit, allow users to protect their investments/purchases No: Do not allow 0 second ejects, Do not allow auto-ban on eject (bans must be manual), Match LL's algorithm for ejecting off the parcel to nearby parcel I don't appreciate being framed as some troublemaker, some intruder, some invader, or some 'rude person' because I happened to enter someone's property in the course of freely exploring the world SL has to offer. By allowing me to do so within reason and fairness there are benefits to everyone. A land owner sold a 1024m parcel to me because I discovered it in a decent location and decent price (because I am not a big creator yet) A rental owner got a rental (until the region disappeared but most likely I got banned for an opinion expressed on the forums) because I discovered it exploring. A couple creators got some sales from discovering their little stores that normally I would never have found or looked at, and flew down to see what is up. You might meet someone you normally never would, isn't that a plus? No, getting screamed at and banned just for saying "Hello" is not reasonable (and this was a neighbour parcel to mine! haha) The funny thing is, this was all done while constantly ramming into boundary lines, and occasionally being sniped by eject bots. I find it a bit weird that I have to fly full speed and not even pause just so I don't get sent home by some paranoid landowner and lose my place. So I might as well post about it because MOST won't. They'll just say "This is stupid and annoying" or even be confused as to why they're suddenly getting sent home as they fly around - AND THEY LEAVE SL. I don't think we need to go as far as having a 'right' to roam. I guess I was ignorant thinking that SL was a world I could roam around in. Not once did I ever get the notion (when seeing SL marketing for the first time) that it wouldn't be open. I support people's rights to protect their property and goods, but not to the point where it disturbs other people's enjoyment of the platform - and 0 second eject and auto-ban bots are not that. Also see my post about "LL could Consider On-Demand Parcels/Worlds" regarding another solution, that would serve those who are ban line and privacy focused - and the benefits of moving those users to a on-demand service instead where they can get what they want - and as a result the rest of the SL world is open to those who don't care that much and want others to visit.
  16. The way I organize is by assets now and such or projects, can't be messed with.
  17. I dunno. Personally I'd like to move to this system. Imagine having 20,000 items with no folders at all! HAHHAA
  18. Sure, we have different opinions on the matter, when it is a mix of everything. I was building and other political issues started coming into play that overshadowed and even discouraged further investment. Unlike here where we can go back and forth within reason without fear of being banned "for monopolizing the chat", all of that counts to scaring potential users off. The fact is they had users, and many were exploring it and leaving right after for issues that most will simply not want to admit. So we'll have to agree to disagree. You are also right and I can understand too. I always commented about what a waste it was of a world that people would spend so much time building it, yet in practical use, most people just stood around in a 4m square space and chatted anyway. Oh well, I don't have all the answers.. I just see what is happening on other platforms and what drives it, and I'm not so sure why people here are blind to it.. Of course 'build it and they will come" seems to work there.. Roblox is full of games and experiences so why would it not apply to Sansar and SL? The only thing that's different is WHO is running these platforms and why can't they capture what Roblox does? Is it really marketing? I can only speak for myself and my group of unwanted players and how our experience was soured by issues not related to the platform. Unlike SL where most of the complaints or reasons why they don't join me here is related to lag, heavy computer usage, etc. For the other platform is was more of political issues, the feeling that they couldn't just speak and relax, and the weird feeling of having staff being like parents always watching, always present, etc. That may not be your experience, but I'm only offering reasons from my experience why a portion is not there and why. The weird thing is many of them are now on VRChat (which I can't stand lol) - and the main reason? Freedom to speak and express themselves. Strange huh. "We dont' get in trouble here and we don't have people reporting us all the time" I think what we do agree upon, even though we are probably on different sides of the fence on some views, is that we want a cool place to hang our hat, build and welcome users of all types. This new CMO talks real big, yeah yeah yeah we heard it before, and he thinks he can take on Roblox and Meta with an old platform and engine, and mesh format heee hee hee heee heheehe heehe ahhaha hahahaha.... Can't market a brand new platform with all the bells and whistles and modern workflows but can with an older one?
  19. Pretty much whatever happens if you can see it in BLender, it shouldn't change in appearance in the uploader. Perhaps if you are exporting you may be applying a modifier somewhere, or on export to DAE, the auto triangulation is creating artifacts. in any case make sure your base mesh in Blender is clean and sound. Check your autosmooth settings. Mine is around 60 degrees on average, if it was lower at 15 to 30 I might get those edges to look sharp too.
  20. It is the booleans that you have used that have messed up your geometry. Since the verts aren't matching up, sharps applied and vertex normals are going to clash. In the file I see the cylinder shape is quite mishapen at the ends. There are ways to connect these objects together, if you really really really want to, just look up Blender Secrets or other on YT if you want to clean up the mesh with all the boolean verts Model each piece seperately that way your sharps and normals will be fine. then join them up into the same mesh. If you have repeating elements like the arm and half-sphere, unwrap those first (and maybe even texture them) then duplicate two more times to finish your design. And since each piece is it's own mesh, it is much easier to decimate later for LODs and such.
  21. Yep and every time this topic comes out, gotta be on record to say "Keep your political BS out of Second Life"
  22. I agree. Focus on the user experience, getting more users, improving everything to do with users, keep creators happy, etc. Then a company will BEG to participate on SL. The problem with Sansar was they were marketing to companies, DJ outfits, etc trying to get them to go there, but to what # of users? I whole heartedly agree and assert (as a past hardcore gamer who knows that community inside and out), gotta get the users (and creators) first. I am a big advocate of 'build it and they will come' (I said this on Sansar) but that is not to the exclusion of other business practices and marketing, it iss alongside at the same time getting and retaining users. People may argue the 'chicken and egg' argument about this, but I firmly believe that if there is an immersive, fun and interesting 'world' for users to explore, play and socialize in - then they will stay and come back, and bring some friends. Without an area to stand or gather (a world) there is nothing. As a creator and one who can defer gratification and credit while investing into something like bettering my skills, or working on a world that could engage people - I already understand that I will be putting that initial investment in, that I'm not entitled to visitors or users, and that I'm not entitled to them using or staying there - unless I can provide engaging content. So in the chicken and egg kinda debate - I'm still for 'build it and they will come', though again this is not excluding other needed things like marketing, advertising, etc. If users don't enjoy our builds, that's our fault and our failure. No point having users that will come to your parcel/world, see everything in 3 minutes, see no interactivity, see no changes or updates to keep them coming back (like decorating your nightclub for christmas or having a hockey night themed version, etc), and they get bored and leave. We can do this. If I think I know who you are, I know you are very talented and know what I mean. Yep. If you have enough users on your platform, by whatever means, the corporations they want will beg to be on their platform. Roblox and Fortnite have millions, so they're in the power position and actually offer some value. OR they will come (eg. Hello Kitty) like the <ahem> prementioned platform, only because it's cheap or free and getting a premium spot in a 'hub' - might as well do it. But are they going to pay to advertise to an empty world/platform? Yep. In many ways it would be a <ahem> newer platform's dream to have corporate companies and their products (in 3d asset form) to sell all of us, and pretty much sure non-brand or unknown or even innovative designs from creators will play second fiddle. I'm not so sympathetic to 'inspired by' creations, because usually they are just copies and basically gaming the rules - so don't care about them. Or if someone is just replicating models from Martha Stewart Magazine or Home and Garden and selling them for a profit - they can do it, but SHOULD come to odds with Martha if she decides to start selling her own assets there. After all users have said they want real-life looking assets (which bores me), so it's not entirely false that corporations selling 3d versions of their most desired products wouldn't happen eventually. This is also the aim of the modern Metaverse - and ugly corporate-run hellhole of rules and behavioural control. No thanks. I would agree. I'm just wondering why I'm a sucker for punishment and continue. I just like challenges I guess, and SL gives me technical ones. I did start in SL, and I do want to 'graduate' of sorts and find my place. Can't do much more before a computer system upgrade (due to Covid its 3 years delayed now), otherwise I'm off to Unreal to see what it has to offer FOR SURE. With all the tons of work a creator has to do here, along with workarounds, and learning and stumbling and trial and error even for some of the basics, the learning curve (for at least us self-taught) can be steep and grueling and discouraging at times (Sansar was a breeze in comparison, though they had a habit of incomplete and outdated documentation on pretty much every subject - and locked behind their Discord channel wall away from the world). "We will now focus on live events and event spaces" was fine, as long as it didn't exclude all other activities on a platform, and can be done side by side with everything else. AltSpace, Sinespace, etc don't seem to have a problem being everything, no need to focus on one thing - then have it as a part of why a platform fails. Focus on users users users. "Let's not worry about more banning tools. We don't have enough users for that right now. Let's just focus on getting more people here, I want that griefer problem. Let's get the users here first then we can deal with that" - A wise quote from the late Ebbe (regarding Sansar) People need to stop worrying about trolls and griefers in new users - they are part of the equation and are easily blocked by individuals anyway. Most of them are just rowdy gamers like myself that are used to talking guano, teasing people and having fun. It's a bit of a guano test - but we always settle down. No need to panic. And if that troll makes videos about the platform, it's free advertising Get the users! Yes, true value in the service, event or world. A reason to come and visit, and return. And bring friends. If the value proposition, such as seen on <ahem> the other platform, was "Buy a ticket, and come to an event with a live DJ", then you come and it's a stream of a live DJ, without any investment in actually performing in the platform itself (eg. not just streaming into it, or not even acknowledging it at all)... Then all I am doing is watching a stream I could watch through a more efficient way, through youtube or other, and then I don't have to deal with my computer using all the resources to process the 3d world, the crowing of avatars - for an event that most people just click a dance emote and go AFK anyway. Is that really engaging content? Nope. Engaging content would be for a platform to be big enough that there is an actual Metallica concert (pick your favourite artist) on the platform FOR the platform, and FOR the actual users AT the event - then it might be something of worth
  23. This is related to my post about Being Insta-Ejected/Banned From Land Just For Exploring, and from the responses perhaps Linden Lab could consider moving towards a more on-demand instanced type world much like Sansar did. Of course, I don't know if this is the prevailing attitude of Second Lifers in general, or just the individuals who frequently post on the forums - but perhaps this is something to discuss and for LL to consider moving forward. Consider making parcels/lands/worlds (whatever you want to call them) more private by making them 'on-demand-only' instances much like was used in Sansar. I will refer to them as 'parcels' for now. This means that worlds are no longer rendered in the 'open world' as is experienced when you explore regions in Second Life. For so many parcels inworld, ban lines are up or more draconian methods of ejection/ban bots are being more commonly used now. Opinions expressed at least on the forums is that people want privacy, have the right to privacy, and should be able to eject and ban whoever they like for whatever reason. I would propose that we grant such parcel owners their wish - and make their parcel private, only to them and their visitors - and remove their impact from the open world altogether. After all, what can contribute to lag, fps drops, region drops, etc is rendering their 'private' land to the 'public' space. All their mesh, textures, and scripts that many have to 'derender' sometimes just to have a good fps in the area are pointless to waste bandwidth on - so why not derender any private space by default? Disclaimer: This may or may not already be handled somewhat with private 'island' type parcels on the map. Take this post as applied to public areas that any SL'er can access. The benefits: For a general user: Those who like privacy will never ever be bothered by anyone ever again. They will have their private area without anyone ever entering their parcel uninvited ever again. For those exploring the grid, having less parcels to render will improve performance. For those exploring the grid, no interruptions, ejections to their home or other forceful actions will be encountered (or much less). FPS, etc improvements - or any other technical improvements on performance that would be obvious Private parcels will be derendered, so if you have a parcel beside or nearby them, your performance could go up as well No need to put your store, your house up in the sky to avoid others - you will never see them again with on-demand parcel loading service For Linden Lab: Less resources used - as private parcels will be removed from rendering and impact on public lands Only serve up parcels marked as 'public' and stop wasting time rendering parcels that want to be inaccessible Improve the experience of the general SLer or new user who may be discouraged by not being able to move relatively freely Benefits should be obvious: A parcel is only loaded on demand Perhaps LL could even consider a surcharge for privacy, versus public access, or charge less for privacy. Seems to me if the prevailing attitude on Second Life is to be private, to 'leave me alone!' and to 'stay off my lawn', we should oblige them and save $$$ and resources and perhaps consider going to an on-demand service. Even those who are quite open on their parcels don't even spawn on the ground, they may have their stores, parcels, etc up in the sky to avoid everyone else. This is a clear indication that there is a need, not only about privacy - but of being away from others to maximize FPS, etc - so yet another reason why on-demand could be desirable. For me personally: I would like to be able to have a larger parcel, and with more Li available. I would be interested in an on-demand world if it allowed more flexibility (and most importantly more prims per sq m) Is Land Impact limits real or arbitrary? Could an on-demand parcel/world be able to have more Li available and perhaps as a bonus because it ISN'T rendered inworld? If this was possible, but the cost was an on-demand instance much like Sansar served up, and because of it I could get more Li for my bucks I would most certainly be interested. After all, in a on-demand world, we could probably create and pay for packages for our unique situation, set our privacy and public access status, etc Might be a good thing to consider. ---------------- Responses are appreciated but please keep it fair and considerate, and without personal attacks. All we want is a better, more open and friendly, and smooth running SL.
