  1. Was just about 2 years ago I posted on Forums about Second Life's Welcome, Orientation area. Everyone can find these Landmarks. They are permanently listed in your Library. Recently there was a discussion and a change of TOS about Viewer preferences and ones ability to "SEE" which viewer one is using. I watched OZ Linden say that after review that this feature was creating a problem since some felt they were being harassed and this feature contributed to a tension in SL. Well OZ I think you need to visit your SPECIFIED landmarks that are called Welcome and Orientation. If ever there is a "feature" that creates tension I would place these right at the top. Just exactly what are these areas for? What purpose do they serve? Is it to bring SL's best face to the Newcomer arriving? To "Orient" in the ways that one should interact with their fellow Avatars? What I see is A Retirement home for old avatars. In my recent visits I see absolutely nothing has changed as to these areas. They are neglected hangouts that are rallying places for those who enjoy harassing and creating tension. Did you wonder why Linden now gives "paid" members their own sandboxes ? At least that was a start. Linden next time you remove a feature from a fantastic viewer please....Go look in your OWN backyard if you want to "help" those here in SL not get "upset" over the fact that they might get someone questioning their choice of viewers. I think its time LInden give an area that shows the best sides of what CAN be created in SL. Clean up your Welcome areas... Make Orientation just that. Has been 2 years and ,as I thought ,Linden has not changed this. But over the last 2 years they have changed "some" things. One wonders.. Is SL a place where one has to fend for themselves. Stand up for themselves. Or if they do not like ..Just TP away... or ticket or whatever! Not according to OZ Linden ...No sir! .. we just make it so all can not see which viewer..POOF and its done. Thank you OZ for helping take the tension away of one having to DEFEND ones choice of viewers !!) ... hey can you help one at Welcome area... What's that... Just don't go there... Submit a ticket.... LIGHTEN up.. its just SL... ohhh sorry to bother you) Will check back in another two years.
  2. Thanks for all the insight into this interesting but what seems to be for some a troubling issue. I do not confess to be a programmer nor fully understand differences in "code" and storage of such. From what I read here is that because SL is such a changing world every day that the idea of permanent cache is impossible? So I am to compare it to "browsing" the internet type of thing compared to playing a static game like WOW or COD. And I should be thankful that LL stores all this data and provides us with constant updates through efficient updates of my cache to make sure I "see" the world correctly. Still haven't figured out whether its better to clean daily (like brushing your teeth ) or to keep small cache and let "the code" take care of randomness of my cache. I guess this something like sim crossings and lag that will have to wait till technology and new know how comes up with a better idea than the one I was thinking. Thanks for all the insight....oh and please lets not bring politics into a technical discussion....this is wayy over any politicians head :matte-motes-big-grin:
  3. I have read some trying to understand "The Cache" used in SL viewers. From what I gather it is something that was put in place long ago to be used as a "temporary" cache stored on ones HD to help speed up retrieval of textures, sounds and such. Also I have read about the randomness with which these items are stored all over one's HD. If you were to look at your HD you will see that "cache" is put wherever there is a place to put it. No sequential order. Now long ago I could see this has helping to "speed up" ones expierence in sl since supposedly you did not need to retrieve this data from the server therefore freeing up time since the idea is it is faster to retrieve from HD than from server. But now in todays world of SL ,considering the randomness of "The Cache" and the huge increase in textures and land I am wondering if this whole concept should not be addressed. One idea that I was thinking of is: Could Linden offer players a "Bundled" Cache to SL viewers? Most "Video Games" load the complete "World" onto ones computer in a nice neat package why can't Linden offer something like this? I would think that there are many "Items" common to the SL World that everyone could use and if these were given as a "Permanent cahce" I would think it would remove load from Server side and speed up ones expierence Inworld. So was wondering.. is this possible? If not why not? One could still have a "temporary" cache but one that would be much like ones used by Windows OS. Thanks
  4. I am wondering why does Linden Labs have 3 different servers? Is one performing better than the rest? If so can ALL servers be changed over to these? I happen to have a homestead run on BlueSteel. Is this an older model? Also is it not possible for LL to reduce share time or load placed on Servers for Homesteads? I would think that with all the additional and new items that have been introduced in SL over the last 3 years does the old "sharing" premise that homesteads do still apply?? And please lets not bring cost into this because would imagine the pay back on servers is probably 3 years(setup and Tier fees), and that's not counting the tax right down allowed for the equipment each year. So with all the restarts and roll outs can anyone give me some answers? :matte-motes-big-grin-wink: Thanks all.
  5. OK....here we go again another rolling restart on servers!!. LL could you please....please stop messing with these. Forget the Mesh crap...and jsut stick to keeping things normal. Most people won't use it anyway. SO can we jsut get so we are NOT doing Rolling Restarts ALL the time. Thanks for help.
  6. Hotrod you are correct that something has been happening since beginning of July. Linden has been doing some "server restarts" a lot. The first roll out they did created a lot of "lag" issues in Homestead sims which only recently did they correct. I used Phoenix viewer until recently and found it very stable. You do not mention what OS you are using. I use WIndows 7 64 bit and phoenix ran extremely well. Now I have switched to Firestorm since all Viewer 1 versions will soon not run well if at all in SL and I refuse to use Viewer 2 since I do not like Facebook or Tweeter which does not belong in this world. I have had considerable trouble with Firestorm similar to what I see on your YouTube. Since the code is being changed do to Lindens desire to integrate Mesh more "bugs" are popping up. I also believe Linden is working on trying to balance how loading of Textures vs.. Scripting when one "arrives" in world or Sims. All of this is playing havoc on each persons settings. Also you will notice Bandwidth. This plays an important part in "loading" time to the client from the server. Also cache is becoming more and more a player in this. One can help "load" quicker if one does not clean often since many textures are stored here. But if the cache becomes "corrupted" which does happen for various reasons and one has to "clean" and YES start all over collecting. I like you have chosen to continue to struggle through hoping this will all calm down. Bigger issues lie ahead for SL like how to keep the Creators here and retain first time users. "Land" issues and pricing. I think Linden needs to quit messing with Graphics(they have done a great job) and start laying out a plan to keep SL a viable vibrant place it once was ,and in some places still is. Ask the question "Where will SL be in 2 Years?" not "How will SL look? "
  7. I can understand your issues Emili. I am running Widows 7 64 Bit Professional. I Core 7 950 3.07ghz EVGA Nivida GTX 460 1 Gig with 6 Gig Mem. At first I ran the old Linden Viewer 1 because I did not like New Viewer 2 at the time. I then switched to Phoenix's latest viewer 1.52. Phoenix has run very good. Because, in Lindens infinite wisdom, this Mesh stuff as well as some changes they are making to Mono Scripting ,counting Avatar cost, Memory usage among other things ALL Viewer 1's are going to not "see" nor perform well in the future SL. So I tried Firestorm. Phoenix's latest "Beta" release. I had big issues especially with graphics. Think there are many bugs still needing work. I have yet to try Lindens latest Viewer but maybe forced to eventually. I am not sure what all this will mean but I worry more problems will arise. I suspect it maybe your video card. You may want to a clean uninstall and by that I mean everything. I know Phoenix has this on their sight (support Wiki) and I have done many times ; -) Not sure about Linden. There is something about 64 bit that creates issues in the code try looking around Linden for FIX. Good luck lets hope we can make the NEXT transition of Viewer and remain in SL. :matte-motes-big-grin:
  8. Thanks to all the replies. I am using Phoenix latest viewer. As far as LOD I usually set at 5. My graphics card is NIVDIA 460 Windows 7 so rendering is not an issue. As far as Avatar cost I do that all the time Understand what adding additonal items to ones avatar does for "rezzing" one's avatar and try to keep as low as possible without running around naked ; -) The MAXnode I have not tried and this maybe the issue for small (nano ) prims used in Jewerly and could be the settings have been changed in Phoenix's viewer. I will experiment and see. Thanks again for all your inputs May the force be with you!
  9. Is it me or maybe my viewer but recently I have noticed that certain jewlery, like necklaces and wrist bracelets, are not showing up on my avatar. I look at Items Worn and shows I am wearing. If I Detach and Wear again it appears fine. Then after awhile i no longer see. I wonder if I changed a setting or if Linden has, again, modified their program to cause havoc in scripting of these items. Anyone else out there seeing this or am I going blind ? :) Thanks
  10. I also Even have the I core 7 950 and Asus extreme MB and SL told me my recommended graphics "by default" was all set to bottom. Normal because I am sure its diifcult for Linden to recognize all the dirvers that are used to run viewer. One thing to remember is by setting your graphics to Ultra and beyond the "load" time will take longer. Some of this will depend on your connection speed, might try experimenting with bandwidth speed on viewer, also the amount of avatars and objects in each sim. So if your patient am sure you will have a wonder and colorerful expience in SL. Ride on EVGA !
  11. Hello Kim...Good Luck Kim And God said "Let there be light" and there was light.God saw that light was good, and he seperated light from darkness. 12. Hello J.J. Found this nice article about what you are asking. Give it a try and see if it answers your question. http://analutetia.com/2009/06/22/anatomy-of-lag/
