i received email from second life saying i was being followed by a certain avatar

The email was from secondlife.com not from the person in second life.  This email stated i was being followed by and gave avatar name and then it allowed me to click on their profile.  I dont know what this is, something new from second life but i do not like it whatsoever.  The avatar is also no one that i know.  Please notify me.

Sounds like somebody has started following you on your web profile. Click on the People tab in your web profile to check who is following you: https://my.secondlife.com

They go to your profile and click follow. It means that whenever you post anything on your feed, they can read it. You have privacy settings you can adjust to control who can read what. Your profile is here: https://my.secondlife.com/yammy.docherty

You will see under my name is an add friend button. On yours, for me and everyone else, is also a folow button.

 

If I choose add friend, you can accept or decline it or ignore it. If I click follow, I automatically follow you, you have no choice and you cannot remove me.

"Following" does not mean tracking you in world.  It means they are "following" your Web profile at my.secondlife.com, like someone would "follow" your facebook page.
