I just rezz it on the ground, link it and send to the height I want it.  Two reasons.  First is that it's easiest for me that way.  And second, that way I can enable "show property lines" and make sure my build does not infringe on anyone else's property or extend onto the Linden Protected land that borders my property on three sides.

That's a perfectly good method, and it will make sure that the object is actually in the airspace over your parcel too, instead of lapping onto your neighbor's.  As Cinn suggests, you can also rez a work platform on the ground, raise it to 300m, and build on it.  Before the Firestorm viewer made it really easy to create a work platform (using its shortcut command "rezplat"), my own standard method was to rez a cube, sit on it, and change its Z-setting to ride the prim to my work altitude.  Then I'd stretch the prim, stand up, and go to work.
