Check to be sure that you don't have a firewall or an antivirus program denying you access to Second Life.  See http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Configure_your_software_firewall for information about how to teach your firewall to let you in and look at http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/doku.php?id=as_anti-virus_white_listing_steps to find out how to get your anti-virus program to do the same.

There may be other problems, of course, but that's a very common one.  If you are still having trouble, come back here and add more information to your question by clicking on the Options link in its upper right corner and selecting EDIT.  Please do NOT start a new thread.

Hello Jessica and welcome to SL Forums. You didn't report something about your system's specs or which viewer you use. You can edit your post (Options --> Edit) adding more details. That would help for a better answer. For now, i will answer generally trying to suggest possible solutions. We haven't an announcement for problems in world this moment in http://status.secondlifegrid.net/ We had earlier rolling restarts but they have been completed now. At first, try to log in a difference region. Protected lands like Smith are recommended. If you can't choose a different region in your log in screen, give the command: Menu Me --> Preferences --> General Tab --> Enable "Show on login" --> OK.  After click the down arrow where it says "Start at" and choose <Type region name> --> Smith --> Login. If it doesn't work, clear your cache under your preferences (under Advanced tab in V3 and under Network & Folder tab in Phoenix) and try again to log in. Try also temporarily to set lower your performance under your preferences and graphics tab. If the problem remains, power down your modem / router leting it closed for 1-2 mins, restart your computer, power on and try again. See if that makes any difference.
