Is there a way to buy land outright?

Recommended Posts

Asking for a friend who is not good with managing forums etc.. He wants to know if there is a method of owning lands outright.. no tiers. Just a large one payment account. Like when you buy a home in rl with alot of cash and you don't have a mortgage?

Thanks.:matte-motes-big-grin:

Not that I know of. Think of tier as property tax. You can't even own land outright in the real world. If you don't pay the assessed property tax, the government will seize it from you.

You can host your own Open Sim server.  But that won't connect you to the Second Life grid.  As for Second Life, you'll never actually "own" the hardware your sim is residing on.  There will always be some sort of server and support fee. (^_^)y

...the blunt answer for "your friend" is NO... like in RL, after you buy land or a home, you have weekly, month;y, yearly expenses like maintenance, utilities, taxes, etc. etc... here in SL all those are condensed in what is commonly called tier fees...

..when you - or anyone else for that matter - will buy land in SL, you will in fact buy and reserve a space on a hard drive on a physical server in RL.. if you have more buying power you can buy the whole hard drive space or even the whole server... this is how you will own and manage a full region or homestead...

... Those servers exist in RL and they are placed on real land, in a real facility (usually called data center) and to keep them running the owners need to pay for utilities (power is just one of many), maintenance staff, security staff, etc. taxes... etc, etc.

...so pretty much like in RL you need a lump sum to purchase the property itself and then you'll need money to maintain it...

If you become a Premium member, you can own 512sqm of Mainland (or a linden home) and you will not pay any tier fees on that.

If you start a group & the members all donate their 512 allowance to it, you not only get their 512s but you get 10% more as a bonus. It is possible to have tier free group land as big as you want provided you have enough contributions from members. My group  used to own a lovely 4x protected double prim 2048 in Nautilus completely tier free, with just 4 us contributing, as well as a small plot elsewhere with the bonus.

True, but premium membership is a lot cheaper than it appears to be, especially if you pay yearly, where it works out around $5.60 for the first year & $9.60 a year after that....Much cheaper than tier fees.
