Getting notifications from groups I've never joined, people I've never subscribed to, places I've never been.

I know it's not somewhere I've been or anything because this is happening on my alt too, which is only a month old and has barely gone anywhere.

How do I stop getting random notifications?

Personally, I ask nicely if it's from a person (I /Hate/ random group calls.) or submit an AR if it's from an object. (I don't and wouldn't subscribe to recieve IMs from objects, (except for a couple I made myself) so If I get an unsolicited object-IM it's almost-definitely reportable spam.)

You don't have to go anywhere. It could be bots combing the grid looking for users to add to an advertising service or things people wear that also send region user lists to an advertising service every region they go to.

Following on from Lucia's advice, if you get unsolicited IM or anything, note the sender and just block them. Problem solved.
