Inara Pey's blog reports that, according to Grumpity Linden "The new VP has apparently been hired, and will be starting “soon-ish”." No word on who it is.

https://www.lindenlab.com/careers has LL's current job openings. The one for SL's VP of engineering has disappeared.

Current job openings: 7 for Tilia, 2 for SL. The SL ones are for the customer support call center.

Just as important to understand is that Grumpity herself held this position on an interrim basis, so it was not left empty all this time.

Somehow, I think they may have promoted from within but it will be interesting to see.

BTW, when Oz came in ( remember debating him at the SLCC meet-up in Boston), he didn't say "let's swap out the engine to Unity" or whatever. And if a new one comes in from outside, that's unlikely, too. Yet there's a certain hard core fanboy or ex-fanboy user base that claims with great disdain that unless LL does this they are dog meat.

I hope not, we desperately need fresh eyes, energy and direction.

Yeah, that's never going to work.

The people who tend to shout about this the loudest also have absolutely no concept of how SL works, how game engine in general works, how how unreal works.

If they did, they would realize they have all the lego bricks needed to build there own SL client in <game engine of choice>, realize that was a terrible idea, consume hundreds of hours, perform like garbage, and look just as bad because no one in SL knows how to place a light source. Sure, there are plenty of things UT5 does well and SL can learn from, but that's about the practical limit of it. It's also not like the viewer source and game engines are even hard to come by.

This is a well worn SL trope, back in the early days the engine of choice was crysis, an engine so badly written it ran well on almost nothing back when it was relevant.
