Yes, because your peak usage for the month would include that land. Even if its for 5 mins.

PeeWee is correct, you pay tier based on your peak usage in the monthly time period.   However, your payment cycle determines your monthly time period and not the calendar.  Go to your Dashboard - Account - Account Summary.  At the bottom you will see the summary of your land holdings.  Look at the Next Bill date.  As long as you abandon your land before the next bill date, you will not pay another month in tier.

Welcome to Second Life Answers, Cheryl. As Peewee states, the tier is charged for peak usage during your set monthly period. 

I would also add that you should never abandon land without considering the other possibilities first.  If you join a group inworld such as Arbor Project (if you can't find it under Groups in the Searches, then you can see it on my profile), you can ask if anyone would like to purchase your land rather than you abandon it, and you will get a fair price for it from someone (current basic value though at the moment does seem to be around 1L$ per sq m )
