Looking for a head that approximates Charlie Runkle from Californication

This guy:

It's so difficult, 99% of the guys have facial hair, and look angry. I can't find anyone who looks like him. Is there hope?

I think the facial hair usually depends on the skin you're wearing. A lot, if not all, mesh heads come bear faced and bald headed. 

Honestly I am no expert in male mesh heads, or mesh heads in general, but I think you can probably pull that look off with the catwa daniel head. Just mess around with the eyebrows to give you a more happy look.

I mostly mean it's hard to tell the shape & contours of the face with facial hair.

   I'm not sure. Grab yourself some demos from the various brands that offer bento mesh heads and play around with the sliders. Most skins come without facial hair, and most facial hair is a separate texture layer or mesh object.

Don't forget the brow shape. Many brow shapes is made for low, "angry" eyebrows.

Video tutorial about how to make brow shapes. This is not changing the color or thickness of the eyebrows, but the shape. Higher brows without arched points will make the avatar look happier and more approachable. Brow shapes are unisex.

Edit to add: Some skins have painted on eyebrows that an eyebrow shape can't change much. They are often made to look intimidating, with painted in "angry look". Your option is to demo browless skins and demo other brows from the Marketplace.

And about skins, you will find that a lot of skins have painted in "hollow cheeks" with deep shades, it will not fit the slightly round face with full cheeks.

You could go for a teenager face/skin with normal cheeks.
