I don't understand where I can place my worm farm. Do I need to have bought  land in order to place it?

I suppose you could rez it in a sandbox but that is likely to be returned to you at some point.  Owning your own land is best if you want to rez something for a long time

You can either buy some land or rent some land.  However, know that some rent areas may have rules about whether or not you can put out the worm farm.

Indeed something to keep in mind, but there are specialized pet/worm farm rentals.
