If I do not want my friends to see me on SL, how do I make myself invisible and still be on-line?

You can't make yourself invisible. Some viewers will show you as online even if you hide your presence from your friends. If they are in the same groups as you, the group list will show you as online too.

If you want some private time, create an alt and don't tell your friends about it.

Open your friends list, scroll down till you see your "friend," and simply uncheck the box that indicates whether to let that person see when you are online or not (I believe it is the first column box). You will also see what settings they have for you, as well.

It's a fairly simple matter to write a script that will look for any SL resident and tell you whether s/he is in world, so there's really no foolproof way to hide.  You can uncheck the "LookAtMe" box next to anyone in your friends list, so that they can easily see when you have logged in, and of course nobody can tell where you are, even if they do know that you're in SL at the moment.  That's usually enough to keep all but your most persistent friends away.  The only other solution is to create an alt and don't tell anyone her name.

The only way to really hide from your friends is to create an alt. Then you have a completely separate account, with no connections to anyone or anything that your main is connected to (unless you make the connections yourself, of course).
