It's another week in Second Life. We're back on track after the emergency deploys upset things the week before last. We've promoted BlueSteel and have a new project filling that slot.

Second Life Server (main channel)
We promoted the "Content Management" project from BlueSteel this week. This contains some updates to the IP management tools. We fixed a few sim crash modes.

Second Life RC BlueSteel
A new project goes into this slot. This is "Inventory Capabilities" project and adds new capabilites to the agent ds hosts to support "Accept-Encoding: gzip". This will allow faster inventory responses when viewers support it.

Second Life RC LeTigre
This is again a maint-server branch that contains a few minor bug fixes and security patches.

Second Life RC Magnum
This channel will keep the "Estate Transfer Limits" project for round 3. This project implements adjusted behaviour limiting L$, IM, and object transfer for accounts who are limited to estates.

We will be monitoring this thread during the next week so please feel free to post issues that you feel have been introduced by the new code. Please file a JIRA for issues you find and post the JIRA link into this thread. It really helps us out. When determining if issues are relevant or not research is key. Tracking down exactly the right situation where an issue is occurring greatly speeds up the development process to get fixes in place.
I appreciate your help. Have a good week!

There were some questions on the server-beta mailing list about the impact of the inventory changes on Bluesteel.  This was my reply, in case anybody here wants to know:

While the new BlueSteel RC server accepts gzip encoding, the current release viewers do not take advantage of this.  A viewer-side change to request gzip encoding will hit viewer-development sometime soon.

That said, there are fewer "moving parts" to inventory fetching in the new BlueSteel RC version, so fetching inventory using the newer Inventory API should be more slightly more reliable than before.

As with earlier server versions, you will need to use a viewer that supports the new capabilities (FetchInventoryDescendents2 etc.) in order to access the newer Inventory API, such as viewer 2.5.1 or later.

If you want to know the impact of this restart on Blue Steel and those that use it is simple, lag in inventory and the communication window is massive, regular lag in other database related functionons is still terribe, lag and crashes after teleports still continue to be a problem, and inventory loading now is taiking more relogs and oftern requires a dump of the inventory cache.  If you intention was to make things even more difficult for users of third party viewers and drive them out of SL you would seem to be a rousing success, but if you were actually trying to improve things this is a dismal failrue, and we cannot stand many more like it.
