LL pricing policy justifis it.  Any company can charge what it likes for its services, it's up to you whether you take the offer or not.

More usefully - a mainland sim will always be part of the mainland so there are fewer options for keeping it private or running it as you wish.  You pay extra for being, absolutely, the lord of all you survey (for a given value of 'all')

To add specifics to what Peter said, with a private sim:

  • you have access to the region/estate menu, meaning you can control access at a regional level
  • you can (rent) sell land granting the renters full ownership rights and still maintain your ownership and remove your renters if you wish
  • greater control of the sim's terrain
  • ability to increase allowed avatar's to 100
  • ability to setup higher prim allotments per land parcel (assuming you stay within the sim's allotment
  • restart your sim whenever you like

The short answer is control....Its worth the extra $100 to be God mwahahahaha :D

Mainland sims are stuck with the ground texture LL puts there, they can only terraform 4m up or down from default, they all have a 40 avatar limit & global sun.

Private estates you set all them things yourself as well as having debug controls, the ability to restart your sim, no neighbours & much more flexibility with renting/selling land to others as you can actually put plots into their name & not lose the ability to reclaim them.

Plus you get to choose your own sim name, you don`t need to be premium & you get concierge level support :)
