how do I show myself as offline on my profile when I want to remain hidden

I've noticed profiles showing people as offline when they are clearly on line and stood next to me. How can I do this?

You don't, really.  If you look at your friends list, you'll see that you can check an icon to make yourself visible or not visible to any individual friend.   When you do that, the friend will not see that you are on line if she checks your profile, although she can obviously stand right next to you in world.

The bottom line, though, is that you can't hide in SL.  That's not too surprising.  This is a social world, after all.  Anybody can check your online status with a very simple script, no matter what your profile says.  If you don't want people to know that you're around, log in as an alt, or just ignore their IMs when they call you.

in firestorm you can set it also in preferences : only friends can see my online status. And the options you already got in the first reply.

But you will never be able to hide it completely.
