Stristor,

No a PhD is not required...just a link or 2 to the SL Knowledge Base and some videos

https://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/tkb-p/English_KB%40tkb

and specifically...

Wearing clothing and body parts from your inventory

The simplest way to change your avatar's appearance is to wear a new piece of clothing or body part from your inventory.

  1. Click the Appearance edit_wrench.pngbutton at the top of the window to enter the appearance editing mode.
  2. Click the Add More... button to open a list of available clothing in your inventory.
  3. You may use the Clothing dropdown menu to filter by clothing type, or the Search Search button to filter by clothing name.
  4. Select a piece of clothing and click the Wear Item button to add it to your avatar. Any existing clothing of the same type is replaced.
KBtip.png Tip: One quick way to see everything you're wearing is to search in your Inventory for "(WORN". (The open bracket is important, because different things are attached to different places; this catches them all.) You can also right-click your avatar and select Edit My Outfit to see items you're wearing divided by category: Clothing, Attachments and Body Parts

To remove a piece of clothing or an attachment, select it in the outfit editor and click the Close Close icon that appears next to it.

You may use these same procedures to change your avatar's body parts (eyes, hair, shape, and skin) or attachments; just expand the Attachments or Body Parts list instead of the Clothing list.

Note: Some body parts, such as your avatar's shape, can never be removed but may be replaced.

Is your "people" avatar by any chance a mesh avatar?  If so, you are wearing it like a turtle shell over your real avatar.  The real avatar is inside, masked by an alpha layer to keep it from poking through and causing you embarrassment.  Unfortunately, if the clothes you bought are system clothes, they are applied to the real avatar and therefore invisible.

You have a couple of options.  One is to ditch the mesh avatar and use a "classic" avatar that you can dress properly.  There is a large selection in your Library >>. Clothing >> Initial Outfits folder. That's what I would do.  Another possibility is to buy clothing that was designed to fit on that specific avatar, or at least to get an applier that lets you do it.  That can be a frustrating alternative, but may be worth considering.
